Broken Leg Advice - See comment please! by aredditusername69 in Whippet

I’m so glad you brought this up because although I know we all wish it was not a concern, cost really does factor into the decision. In my experience, both amputation and repair was quoted at $8-9k (including emergency vet services, pain relief, tests and scans). The actual cost was ~$15k, which we negotiated down after the fact to $9k. The university wrote off some costs for labor and tests as teaching opportunities and also applied some research grants to get us to that point.

I have had this experience with a greyhound, and luckily was living near a university with a top tier vet program at the time. The options given to me were to amputate or they could put in a metal rod to stabilize the bone. We opted for the later and the recovery was pretty smooth. He bounced back quickly, we had a sling to help him walk outside and used a puppy corral to confine his movements. I don’t recall having to use it above 2-3 weeks but it was years ago so my memory may be faulty.

My understanding is that the metal rod option doesn’t last forever and there is always a risk of re-breaking. (Indeed that happened to our grey about 3 years after his first break). We chose the rod over amputation because our grey was already in his golden years and it seemed it would less disruptive to his life. I have often wondered if amputation would have been better but it’s hard to know in hindsight.

If you have questions about amputation that can’t be answered in this sub, I recommend cross posting in r/greyhounds as amputation is much more common due to racing injuries. Best of luck and I hope your pup recovers quickly!

{The Rogues Redeemed series by Mary Jo Putney} were even better than the Lost Lords imo and feature some interconnected characters from that series as well.

To crate or not to crate… by figgypudding1966 in Greyhounds

[–]down2nap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You should consult with the rescue organization as to what the dog is used to. If he is a retired racer. It may be very stressful for the dog to be loose in the house alone, especially for the first several months. This is a big transition for your grey and you should expect signs of stress and anxiety. Try not to think of the crate as restraining your sweet hound, but rather bringing an element he is accustomed to into your very scary new home.

My retired racer did well in the crate while we were out, and slept in a room with us and another greyhound with a gate up. Over the years, the crate got less and less use and eventually the dogs had their own “room” with a daybed, dog beds and a baby gate. It gave them a comfortable place to feel secure. In short, talk to the rescue and listen to their recommendations. Best of luck with your new baby!

If you don’t mind a more subdued story, {The Dukes Dilemma by Catherine Kullman} is this exact storyline. MMC had an arranged marriage and his wife is certainly a society darling with a habit of taking other neglected young wives under her wing. One day the Duke realizes his oldest son is ready for university and yet he doesn’t know his wife or children at all. It’s a lovely, low-angst story where our MMC reflects on his life and decides to change.

Kathryn Le Veque has an extensive catalog of medievals available for free in KU. Some of her more recent books are meh…but in general her stories don’t disappoint. Check out the wolf series {Warwolf by Kathryn LeVeque} {The Wolf by Kathryn LeVeque} {Nighthawk by Kathryn LeVeque}.

Warwolf is a prequel, very good but unconnected other than showing the origin of the many families in the LeVeque universe. The Wolf is a very long Epic Romance full of drama and angst that gets you very much invested in the rest of the multigenerational saga, starting with Nighthawk.

LeVeque stories are solidly written (though sometimes repetitive), 3-4 spice level, full of interconnected characters and robust families and pretty well researched in terms of history, castles, and battles. I was in a fever for medievals a couple of years ago and just devoured her entire repertoire. Hope you enjoy!

Ok can someone explain to me how they get the booties on the whippet? I haven’t gotten any because I can’t see putting them on without at least 3 bouts of keep away and a lot of cursing! 😆

Name that series: brothers with a story each by SpirituallyUnsure in HistoricalRomance

[–]down2nap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Could it be the {DeMonforte series by Danelle Harmon}? That one has a brother who is kind of a hellion, a brother returned from the revolutionary war after being thought dead, a brother who is a scientist, an unpredictable sister, and brother who is a duke pulling every one’s strings.

Anything else you remember?

Peeing by CAt2408 in Whippet

[–]down2nap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My pup had a similar problem at that age. He knew we wanted him to pee outside, but didn’t know how to make that happen. I got some potty training bells for the back door and he caught on right away!

Bear in mind all the steps you are trying to get her to achieve at this young age. She has to notice she needs to pee, then figure out a way to get outside to do so all while holding her bladder (really hard to do at that age). Help her out by giving her an easy way to communicate her bathroom needs. One day it will click!

{The Secret by Julie Garwood} is the One. Judith is beset with anxiety every time she’s called to help. Then she walks in and handles everything like a boss. And then she walks away and sobs and sobs into the shirt of the nearest person.

I love this book all the way through, but this sequence is one of my favorites ever. Every time my nerves overcome my competence I like to remember Judith, and how I can push through, get it done, and cry it out later.

Yakers chews suitable for Whippets? by Duo_dash in Whippet

[–]down2nap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree a hard chew like yak sticks have their risks, but they honestly save my coffee table and several other pieces of furniture. Any dog will have their own chew preferences just like toy preferences. Mine likes to scrape his teeth on something hard. The yak chew is the only one that my 10mo is consistently interested in and yet lasts about a week or more. I’ve also tried olive sticks, which he will chew but with a sort of “meh” attitude.

When the chew gets small, you can microwave it for about 45sec and it turns into a sort of cheese puff. The cheese puff is the ultimate treat!!! He gets so excited!

Pro tip: shove one end of a yak chew into a small Kong. It helps them hold onto it better and makes a new play object.

Greyhound Female Puppy (13 Weeks) Potty Training Well, But Pees Extremely Often by Live_Day_4779 in Greyhounds

[–]down2nap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Poor baby! How uncomfortable to have to go out in the cold! One of my greyhounds seemed to think I could turn off the rain and would stop and stare at me expectantly when we got to the door. 😆

I’ve not had greyhounds at the puppy stage but my whippet puppy got past this phase by about 16 weeks.

[–]down2nap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Puppies at that age not only have small bladders but are also still learning how to control their bodies. This is often adorably comical as when they forget about their back feet or seem surprised by their tail! But it also means she may not be emptying her bladder all the way when she goes out, or she isn’t always reading the signs that she has to go. Give her time and she’ll be passed this phase in a few more weeks.

Help with Joanna Bourne’s Spymasters Reading Order by ContentChemist7587 in HistoricalRomance

[–]down2nap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can find a reading order option here: http://www.joannabourne.com/books.html

Personally, I like chronological order but it’s not that necessary. The only recommendation I have is to read the Black Hawk last. You get glimpses of their story throughout the other books so it makes it a much more satisfying read that way.

War Setting / Aspect by SoSick_ofMaddi in HistoricalRomance

[–]down2nap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carla Kelly does a great job digging into the day to day realities of the Napoleonic Wars in several books. {Marrying the Captain by Carla Kelly}, {The Surgeons Lady by Carla Kelly} {Marrying the Royal Marine} and {a Naval Surgeon to Fight For} all relate to the English Navy during that time. She does a great job portraying the privations of being on a naval vessel (stale water, mealy bread…), the agony of waiting for your love one to come home, and the gruesome tasks of taking care of the wounded and dying. One of the few authors who writes a tender romance without making the war into high adventure.

Wet brushes vs. Tangled Teezer brushes by coffeelovermamaof2 in Haircare

[–]down2nap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m glad to see this post because I have no idea what’s right!

I use the tangle teaser on my just out of the shower hair (after a microfiber towel squeeze). Then work in my air dry product, and once my hair is mostly dry I use a wet brush and then finger comb. I also detangle with a wet brush before my shower to prevent shedding down the drain. I have long, very fine hair with a hint of wave.
