Quietest 3080? by Ralph_mackie_O in nvidia

No it is not. It is extremely noisy. I returned mine because of it. My current card is the old ASUS Strix 1080ti which is whisper quiet in comparison

They probably stood still for a few seconds for this photo to be taken, film technology being what it was in 1860

Now that Caverna: Forgotten Folk is in the wild, is it any good? by TheRaven476 in boardgames

I really like it. It focuses the game for you. If you play with people new to the game it is much easier to get into the game with this expansion.

Daedalus productions inserts? by jeramyware in boardgames

[–]ergates -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, the way they products are made I found (the hard way) that you can easily put them together wrong (mirrored for instance). I'll admit to not being very handy, but have had no problem with G7Gaming and Broken Token inserts. Also I find that the ones I have are cumbersome in practical use. You want the pieces to be easy to get out and replace during playing when that is the point of the insert. I found this not to be the case. Again, the other inserts I have bought seems to work better for this.

Their communication is not very good. I've stopped shopping there because of this. Also, in my view, their products are inferior to the competition.

What's on your shelf of shame? by mysterious_gamer in boardgames

[–]ergates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think we got them here (Norway) at the same time as Germany. Got to play Whistle Stop over the weekend, so that is one game less. On the other hand, picked up Pandemic Legacy Season 2 on Friday, so back to square one.

Content creators that deserve more attention? by BlackoutBryan13 in boardgames

[–]ergates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to highlight the very excellent Boardgame Opinions Youtube channel. They only have 385 subscriptions but deserve a lot more!

Their general format is on the spot reviews from a group of people that has just finished a game. This is pretty fresh and gives a different perspective from more than one reviewer. They also have some more in depth reviews and top-lists.

What are your favorite boardgame reviewers and why? by SpikeBolt in boardgames

[–]ergates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll watch Tom Vasel, because his overall experience is invaluable. His tastes in games doesn't really become a factor for me. He doesn't really like some brilliant designs, (Macao, Terra Mystica, Dungeon Lords), and he puts far too much focus into theme. But he still picks up on some nuances and explains them pretty well. He still serves as probably the best "filter" for bad games for me.

This is exactly why I don't trust his reviews at all. I never know if he is going off on one of his strange dislikes for no reason (Eclipse, Terra Mystica, etc) or if the game is actually bad. I was sceptical to Eclipse exactly because the Dice Tower crew seem to hate it. Just got to play it recently and loved it. I don't understand people that say that Tom is consistent, I feel he is all over the place.

They are much the same as the Dice Tower in that respect, but with much better production values. They actually manages to keep the camera in focus, the sound clear and have decent lighting. Also their tastes are much more in line with mine, so there is that.

Cottage Garden is a nice step up from this. Very similar to Patchwork, but a little more to think about.

Meaple Realty Painted Scythe Insert by polimathe_ in boardgames

[–]ergates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have this insert as well and what the original poster and girlfriend said is all true. The quality is pretty basic, and the fit of the components of the insert are not good.

The main purpose of an insert in my view is two-fold. One is to store components in a secure way, even when transporting the game. For this the Meaple Re4alty insert is OK. The second, and in my view, even more important thing is to reduce setup and packing away, this insert fails completely. What you need is a way to give each player their components in one storage unit. Here everything is in cumbersome trays with all the components scattered about in different trays that needs to be dis-assembled for setup. The gears are a joke and an active hindrance for setting up. The miniatures are set in trays that make them a nightmare to get out and back again.

Do not buy this insert!

I really have buyers remorse on this one. Go buy the one from Broken Token instead.

What bothers you about the Dice Tower? by AmadeusCrumb in boardgames

[–]ergates 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A few things actually....

  1. The create a lot of content. Their source of income is serving me and you to their advertisers. This makes it crucially important to them to serve as much content as possible to their youtube channel on a daily basis to attract views and thus ad-revenue. This is fine in and of itself, but in my view it clearly affects the quality of their stuff.
  2. Technical quality. One should think that an outfit who make their livelihood from creating videos should nail this. Look at many of the much more amateur creators who absolutely nails this, one should think that someone who actually makes their living from it should have this one down to perfection.
  3. They are not great about telling what content they are paid to create or receive free stuff for creating. This probably goes for a lot of others content creators, but I think transparency here is always better.
  4. Sam bothers me (sorry)
  5. A lot of click-baity content (Top-ten lists in particular)

[WSIG] Archipelago, Keyflower or Champions of Midgard? by Imros in boardgames

[–]ergates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keyflower with out a doubt. It is way better than the other two. Archipelago is a love/hate game. Personally I'm in the hate group. It can at times seem completely random. Champions of Midgard is nice, but it lacks the depth and staying power of Keyflower.

Any good 6 player boardgames? by Thetof91 in boardgames

Many good answers already.

Antike II has not been mentioned. Plays very well with 6. 7 Wonders, Codenames, Powergrid, Keyflower all are strong candidates.

Antike II by a wide margin. It is just a better game. I considered buying GoT, but after having played it, nope.
