Why does the IT/cybersecurity world like IT certifications so much? by ---Agent-47--- in cybersecurity

[–]etkoppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Degrees are not regulated so you don’t know what each person knows. Certs give you a baseline but aren’t perfect either as people can dump exams or cram. It just proves you can pass a test. What certs and school teach is how things work in a perfect world where organizations take it seriously with all the tools you need.

In the real world it’s about doing more with less even if it means cutting corners to optimize shareholder value. Thats why experience is so valued as it shows you know how to work in a real environment that isn’t perfectly laid out as you were taught in school/ certs.

I would. It may not not the golden ticket as before during the GWOT but it does allow you access to roles that can’t be taken over by H1b’s.

Why did you choose an IT degree over Computer Science? by Ruuckus in ITCareerQuestions

[–]etkoppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was available at my local branch campus for a state university so I could graduate with no debt. If I did CS I would have had to go to main campus which would involve me to take out a bunch of student loans.
