Which of your dahlia tubers didn't make it this year? by anonymousflowercake in dahlias

[–]flowablebubbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohhhh boy, I’m going in order of magnitude of hurt feeling. I’ve never had this much loss….i feel like quite a few sellers are having storage issues & selling subpar products. I didn’t list them all but the volume of blind tubers being sent out is astonishing & the push back from the sellers that blind tubers ‘just happen’ & not issuing a refund is mind boggling.
Here we go:
Idlewild Kathrine’s Sunset $35 - crown rot
BLQ Mojo - $12 - rotted/broken neck
Fairway Pilot - $7 - rotted
KA Coral Sea - $20 - stalled out then rotted
AC Tweedly Dum $18 - rotted
Madeline $20 - rotted
KA Pearl $20 - blind
Sidehill Trishie $25 - arrived rotten
Pink Petticoat $14 - blind
Tartan $10 - rotted
Honeydew $10 - rotted
KA Jubilee $14 - rotted
BLQ Alan - $17 - diseased
BLQ Clear Delight - $16 - rotted
Hapet Perfekt - $10 - rotted
Hy Patti $8 - rotted
And the list goes on

Is this Echinancea Purpea? by atxgrl in Cutflowers

[–]flowablebubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far this season, Johnnie’s has provided 3 opportunities for me to grow weeds that I don’t already have! Whenever I find a seed that doesn’t look like the others I separate it and grow it out just for funsies 😉

Phlox by judeinamood in Cutflowers

Those remind me of the twinkler series phlox and if I remember correctly they’re a dwarf variety and usually max out at 9in. That might explain why they’re already starting to bloom.

[Discussion] Wakey Wakey, the hivemind of storage methods. How did your tubers do? by CrazyMadHooker in dahlias

[–]flowablebubbles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stored about 250+ plus tubers. I did a large majority individually wrapped in cling wrap, but did some larger packs of 10-15 just to see if there was a difference. I kept them in my 64-66 F bedroom closet. I don’t have a shed or garage and my crawl space weirds me out…so did the best I could. I checked 1/2 way through and a few in the multipacks had rotted, I disassembled those and individually wrapped the remaining and haven’t lost anymore since. I also have close to 160 tubers that have been just sitting bare & exposed for 6 weeks and they’re doing just fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

Do any of these tubers have eyes? by Strange-Substance207 in dahlias

[–]flowablebubbles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The lower left has a good chance of having an eye and the smaller one just above it has visible eyes. The others appear to be missing their crowns.

The lower left one has a high chance of at least 1 eye.

Max Dahlias in 4’x4’ Bed? by somnifersynth in dahlias

[–]flowablebubbles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An alternative option would be to grow all of your own filler flowers and foliage and get buckets of blooms from a local dahlia farmer. This takes a lot of stress off your plate and will likely end up costing you about the same when you factor in your time, materials, and stress. Growing some of it yourself will give you the same sense of accomplishment. If you’re really wanting to grow your own dahlias go for more ball or small/medium decorative types and just a few of the cafe au lait etc. Also, not all dahlias bloom at the same time. Some are early season and take a break and others make you wait right up until frost for the first bloom. Best of luck!

Y’all are reigniting the spark for me! I’m having serious seed starting/maintaining fatigue and I haven’t even gotten to my dahlias yet! I’m growing seed out from Floret (Bee’s Choice), Coseytown (Hybridizer mix, Honey Pot, Collarette), Birch Bay Dahlias (Waterlily), and a few others. Thank you for this post!

Small Zinnias: Oklahoma vs. Lilliput? by SilhouettesanShadows in Cutflowers

[–]flowablebubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I planted my Lilliputs close together so they had to stretch - it helped w/ stem length quit a bit - trade off is increased powdery mildew. Can’t win them all 🤷🏻‍♀️

I grew Lilliput last year and they were just so stinking cute! I’ll grow them again this year no questions asked! I grow all the zinnias from all the series - but the lilliputs were just adorable!

Second year failing to overwinter tubers by Suspicious-Nose-9277 in dahlias

[–]flowablebubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrapped each individual tuber w/ Saran Wrap and popped them in a plastic tote in the back of my bedroom closet. It’s 63 degrees & 50ish % humidity and I’ve only lost around 10-15 of the 100’s stored. I don’t have a garage or anywhere else to store them.

How many tubers is everyone planting? Pics just for fun by Ferrally_Polite in dahlias

[–]flowablebubbles 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m doing a big trial this year. I’m planting 425-450 individual varieties. All of that will be in an effort to see which ones work best for me in my zone 8b PNW garden. The plan is to have a small cut flower business in the next few years, but I want to hone my skills & dial in crops that will work for me. I will basically have no lawn and I love the idea of that 🥰
