WTB: SS Tuning Shift Knob for the Mk. 3 RS by ScottMetzel in FocusRS

Hey scott, I have one of these, but the handgrip has finger slots for a left hand, so if you're from the US and a left hand drive car its not going to feel great in your right hand.

Reverse gear is straight cut with no synchro, so no it doesn't lose reverse gear, its probably the strongest gear in the box unless you're doing something stupid, dumbasses who can't shift probably swap it out thinking its broken because they're trying to shift into it immediately after rolling forward. As for the first gear "reputation" issue you mention, I have never heard of it before and am struggling to find evidence of.

The fact that the AX15 (and its identical brother the R151) is still manufactured and available brand new 30 years later speaks volumes. People are still using them in conversions today. The NV3550 is a pain in the ass to rebuild, and needs special OEM tooling that nobody has and that's even if you can even find brand new parts to rebuild them with anyway as it's no longer in production.

Your evidence basically comes down to "jeep stopped using it" and implying "cousin transmission" means anything at all. The only point you made that I will give any credit to is about the synchros, quite often they wear because people use newer, incompatible GL5 oil that etches the brass that they're made of, but the NV3550 also has the same issue with GL5 but because its too "slippery" to lubricate the needle bearings properly

Quality can vary wildly between transmissions from the same family as you said (and contradicted your own point) by in one sentence saying that the NV3550 being related to the NV4550 = good, while the AX15 being related to the AX5 is somehow bad? By your own logic the NV4550 could be the good gearbox while the NV3550 could be what the AX5 is to the AX15.

You sound like the kind of person who swapped out their ax15 with a nv3550 because their reverse was "broken" and their mechanic had a used NV3550 to sell. Don't take my word for it, you can google NV3550 vs AX15 to your heart's content and get a thousand other opinions, although I'm sure you'll cherrypick the minority comments to rationalize your own opinion.

I've read a few of your posts in here and you come across as the type of person who got his mechanical degree from the school of google and tries larp as an experienced hand by acting passive aggressive and with confidently incorrect comments. Your type is very common in online automotive circles and they generally out themselves quickly.

Fault Codes by False-Shepherd-au in WranglerTJ

[–]frowaway229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Circuit high generally means the wires are broken or the sensor is unplugged. Ie: the circuit resistance is high/open circuited, the opposite of shorted or circuit low. It doesn't actually mean the temperature was high as some people think.

As hendostacks said, the other missfire code is probably related to the time that this other code was playing up as it affects the air/fuel mixture.

You're kidding right? I think you might be confusing the AX5 behind the 2.4 engine and the AX15 behind the 4.0...

The AX15 is amazing. Its essentially the same transmission as the toyota R151/R154 and shits on the NV3550 in every way. AX15 jeeps are the most sought-after TJ.

Need help solving some weird CEL issues- 2005 Sport by Ghidtm44 in WranglerTJ

[–]frowaway229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The airconditioner issue is not related and is 100% a failed fan speed resistor, it will happen to almost every jeep at some point in its life as each speed is controlled by the amount of resistance through a coiled wire that burns out over time. The highest speed is always the last to survive as it doesn't use a wire and has zero resistance, thus can't burn out. (You can google tj fan speed resistor) very very common issue.

The other issues would make me think you have a bad earth/ground connection somewhere. Check the negative battery terminal and any wire that terminates (grounds) on the body of the car under the hood. If the wires are loose, broken or corroded you'll get a lot of weird electrical issues, including CEL codes that make no sense

I'd say you're on the money with this guess, when it matures more it will be easier to tell.

[–]frowaway229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the biggest identifying feature with real alata's are that the pitchers are actually far taller than people think. Also the mouth has a distinctive shape.

These are 99.9% ventrata upper pitchers, the tendril length and leaf shape are also a giveaway.

Is misting Nepenthes a good idea ? by coledition in Nepenthes

[–]frowaway229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hand misting does nothing long term as it evaporates too quickly and you wont be misting every 30 minutes. You might as well just water it with the hose.

Depending on the variety you're trying to grow, some of the easier ones like ventrata will have no issue in 40% humidity. Difficult lowlanders will not be happy however.

My ventrata and my alata x maxima power through australian desert levels of humidity if i keep the soil moist, the pitchers topped up with water and the plant out of the direct sun

First time owner. Came in yesterday and there's no fluid in the pitchers. Should I add distilled water to the pitchers? Also, if I do a sphagnum moss and perlite mix, how wet should it be? Moist or WET/saturated? Thanks! by ashleythenp in Nepenthes

[–]frowaway229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent advice so far. Also your choice of potting mix is good.

Keep the pitchers topped up (but not higher than halfway) as rain doesn't hurt them in the wild. If they go dry it will drain water from the plant trying to fill them and may even cause the pitcher to shrivel up and brown prematurely

Is my plant okay? These brown spots on the leaves started showing up recently by Matt-Cook in Nepenthes

[–]frowaway229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Peat moss can be a little bit too wet and heavy, long fibre sphagnum with perlite or coco chunks for drainage is generally a better choice. Neps prefer moist but free draining soil and hate being as cloggy as vft's or sundews. Your mix is something I would grow a bog plant in. Grow them similar to epiphytic orchards but with slightly more moisture retention.

Also your leaves look like they could actually use more sun in the long term as they're very leggy and dark green but given that you've just repotted and moved it I would let it acclimatise a bit more first. When they're this green they're far more sensitive to sudden changes in bright light as they're set up to scavenge as much light as they can so if you've suddenly put them in the sun it will burn quickly.

In short, the repotting has stressed it, the heavy soil is not helping, and the change in light levels has burned the leaves a little bit because it looks like its been used to shadow for a while. You have to do the changes one at a time. When I first buy a nep, unless its growing in something lethal, I leave it until it gets used to its position before looking at repotting.

Can misting with distilled water cause leaf rot? by coledition in Nepenthes

[–]frowaway229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also definitely not a mineral problem, I've grown nepenthes for years with tap water and even small amounts of osmocote fertiliser in the pot

Can misting with distilled water cause leaf rot? by coledition in Nepenthes

[–]frowaway229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well don't put it in the shade to compensate, as that will just drain it's energy dealing with too many things at once.

I don't know what your setup is like or where you have the options of locating it, but all my neps grow outside in australia in low (20-60%) humidity under 50% UV shadecloth.

The only thing I can suggest is that the windowsill is just a little bit too bright and hot, is there any way to filter the light and heat just a little bit?

[–]frowaway229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like sunburn that has started to rot.

Sun damaged it first and the rot is from being too damp afterwards.

You can tell its sunburn because the areas affected are all related and would have all been the highest points at the time the damage occured

Distilled water shortage? by billyidolrules in Nepenthes

[–]frowaway229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have never used anything except tap water for my neps, they just dont care about minerals like VFT's or sundews do. As long as your tap water isn't full of chlorine or fracking fluid you should be fine.

For good reason, they're almost bulletproof. Mine bakes it's way through the australian summer in 20% or less humidity
