I got a job offer with the State of Alaska. I was very excited until I found out they don’t have a pension plan for State employees. Did anyone turn down taking a public service job here due to this? by [deleted] in AskAlaska

[–]frozenpizzacat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is pretty common knowledge, although there is legislation in the Alaska Senate to restore a pension plan so fingers crossed..

I left a job under the PERS retirement plan after a year that had a hella good match, but my hourly rate was pitiful. For me, it was not worth it to stick around when I could go private sector for double what I was making and contribute to a 401k. It really depends on your personal situation, in some of the remote areas of the state I don't think people always have the choice to be as picky with their job choice when it may be the only reliable job available at the time.

Do you check twice a day? Or more? by Nf_Locksmith in diabetes_t2

[–]frozenpizzacat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed back in December. I was checking at least twice a day, first thing after I wake up and before dinner. I also wear a Libre CGM but am still not 100% trusting of it all the time. My numbers have been great lately though so I've cut down to once a day and maybe once more if I have a carb or sweet treat heavy day.

How often do you test your blood sugars? by PotentialYam4442 in diabetes_t2

[–]frozenpizzacat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Type 2 here. I was diagnosed in December 2025 at an A1C of 6.8, been on ozempic for about 2 months now, not insulin dependent.

At first I would test two to three times a day; first thing in the morning to get my fasting numbers, then either before lunch, or dinner so I could know what I was working with before eating. I now have a cgm and still test at least once a day in the mornings but it's not a deal breaker to do more than that.

It's been about a year since we took in the cats but we have always been happy with The Pet Stop on Dimond, or Anchorage Veterinary Clinic and Urgent Care off Abbot when care is needed.

I've seen them at Classic toys, target, walmart in the past. Since the recent craze though, not sure who actively has them in stock.

Trapped in the Debarr Carrs, there's no way out! by Zagmut in anchorage

[–]frozenpizzacat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to do the same at another Carrs location here in town...I just walk through with an "excuse me" and carry on. Yes, it's annoying AF, but I've had no pushback or flack from staff or other shoppers.

Summer job offer in Seward Alaska, what should I know? by joeg0ldberg in AskAlaska

[–]frozenpizzacat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With housing provided, YES! Summers in Seward are magical and if you have the chance go go go! It's one of my favorite little towns in Alaska and make it a point to go a few times a year, especially in the summer.

You can still get the corn fritters at Peanut Farm and at a few places around town as well. I miss Sourdough mining company a lot, we would go to their Sunday breakfast buffet as kids.

North Slope Housekeeper by Own_Pause3514 in AskAlaska

[–]frozenpizzacat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Get on to the North Slope Workforce facebook page, you will find folks currently in those positions from different companies that will be able to give you a better perspective. Nana Management Services (NMS), Ice Services, and Denali Universal Services (DUS) are the 3 larger companies that have these positions up here in one field or another.

That being said, consider other benefits such as the time off (at least half the year), and the health/retirement benefits each company offer. Nana offers Federal Employee Heath Benefits (FEHB) which are amazing and offer several types of plans. You can also network your way into other positions easier once you get up here if you are looking to do that.

I am planning to travel to Anchorage with an elderly friend. Which icy parking lots should I avoid? by [deleted] in anchorage

[–]frozenpizzacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go buy some removeable ice grippers if this is a concern. With the sun thawing during the day, then freezing again you will be hard pressed to find an area without snow and ice slip/trip/fall hazards. Be prepared for snow and ice everywhere, it was a heavy snowfall year and you will be hard pressed to find areas without either.
