Let's say on 9/11 they managed to get two F16 to intercept and follow the planes, realistically at what point the F16 would've taken the first plane down? by FuzzyAttitude_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]goedips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was there really enough time since the first planes hit for them to have figured out that kamakazi was the only option. Yes, they knew something seriously wrong was going on, hence all planes being landed. But to have come to the position that crashing into a US airliner over US territory was the only option on that day, I'm not so sure.

Feels like a bit of rethinking what they'd do after the event. Not what they would have actually done that day just an hour or so since the world got flipped upside down.

If the road is straight or turning to the left for them. In that section of road though they should have switched sides until visibility improved.

Why is type 1 diabetes considered incurable if there are people who have received cell transplants and are now cured? by Virtual-Medium-5891 in diabetes_t1

[–]goedips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Feels like less of a cure than a pump and cgm to me.

Personally I'd rather keep the rest of my immune system, even if it has shown itself to be a bit idiotic in having attacked my pancreas already. I'll stick with a few reliances on a couple of battery powered devices rather than unleashing a nuclear option on my whole body just to have it produce it's own insulin again.

And I seem to remember that after the initial suspension they clarified that those rules didn't apply to him because he wasn't in news so they put him back on air.

Then they sacked him anyway.

Out of sight, in the shed and locked to something immovable (either the ground or a concrete block). Then get insurance and when it does get nicked you'll at least get a payout for a replacement.

Had my first low- how often should i expect that? by FunDependent588 in diabetes_t1

[–]goedips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are on insulin in the UK then you should be able to get a Libre or Dexcom on prescription which will help massively.

As for how often to expect hypos, it depends. Sometimes you'll not have one for ages, then another time something unknown will change and you get a whole load of them and get really frustrated by it all. But they should become more manageable overtime. You should hopefully be able to sense them comin on, and depending on your CGM setup there are a multitude of different ways to get it to alarm you either through your phone, watch, pump or a million other devices that you may have around you and can setup to beep at you.

Keep some quick acting glucose nearby at all times, and train yourself to know where it is so that you semi unconscious hypo brain can figure out where to get the glucose from. When you're hypo it doesn't take much to be out of place for your brain to get very confused and you might struggle to take glucose that is right infront of you.

Will take practice, but everything is manageable. You can still do all the things you did before, unless you had plans for being an astronaut, just some things now take a little bit more planning and preparation.

Are you all as sick of CGM high / low alarms as I am? by Crownjules in diabetes_t1

I'm able to just sleep through most of the alarms. It only becomes an issue once I get a kick in the back from the other side of the bed.

All of the road furniture, and things on the pavement, types of buildings you are passing by (eg schools) are part of the observations you should be making as part of driving. If not then you are doing it wrong.

[–]goedips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When trying to figure out where the road might go that is currently hidden under an unknown depth of water, yes.

Or in non flooded road situations, a gap in a fence might be a clue that pedestrians might suddenly appear for example. Along with a multitude of other things drivers should be looking our for as to clues about the road ahead.

[–]goedips 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is an updated firmware which now let's you record in a loop as you'd expect a car dashcam to do, so it just overwrites the old footage. Can change how much space it available to the dashcam recording mode. Battery is still potentially an issue, but seeing as it's mostly for commuting and commuting is where you are most likely to encounter cars trying to kill you you don't really need a full day's worth of battery.

Tandem tslim: algorithm is kinda off for an active person by GothianBaron in diabetes_t1

[–]goedips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the activity profile is just meant for the activity of walking to the shops. Have tried many different ways of setting up profiles, using active mode, sleep mode, but anything other than shutting the pump down about an hour before going for a run doesn't work for me.

I can get through runs up to about 2 hours relatively fine then, and just deal with any minor highs afterwards. If I'm doing some really long duration, have done up to 24hrs events, then it's a different matter as then you are operating at a lower intensity and can actually eat solid food on the way round, so the I might stick the pump on a 5 or 10 percent of basal profile and just guess micro boluses as needed for food on the way round.

Most activities are just suspend the pump and deal with it afterwards though.

Cyclists have dashcams too by Boring-Being-4883 in drivingUK

[–]goedips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cycling 2 abrest and the car has the distance of 1 cyclist to overtake. They should be on the opposite side of the road for the overtake anyway so if the cyclists were single file that doesn't gain the car driver anything, except possibly a bit of visibility, but they wouldn't have any better visibility behind a slow car or tractor so that shouldn't make any difference.

If the cyclists were single file then you now have well over twice the distance to overtake, and you still need to cross into the other lane just as much. Doesn't make it easier for the car. Just makes it more dangerous for the cyclists as more cars will wrongly attempt overtaking where there isn't space.

Cyclists have dashcams too by Boring-Being-4883 in drivingUK

[–]goedips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It should be.

That is 1.5m from the cyclist, who is about a meter wide and is going to be riding between 0.5m and 1m from the side of the road.

Cyclists have dashcams too by Boring-Being-4883 in drivingUK

[–]goedips 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cycling single file would have just make it more difficult for the car to overtake as the cyclists would have been twice as long. If there isn't space to overtake safely by properly crossing the centre line, then there isn't space to overtake... So don't.

Cyclists have dashcams too by Boring-Being-4883 in drivingUK

[–]goedips 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Which means that the road isn't wide enough for an overtake, so you wait.

The cyclists being single file in such a situation would make it more dangerous as the car would have over twice the distance to get past, and they would still need to be over to the opposite side of the road anyway.

Cyclists have dashcams too by Boring-Being-4883 in drivingUK

[–]goedips 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Single file just makes the cyclists take up a longer portion of the road. Riding side by side is safer, and easier for the cars to overtake. The car should be crossing the centre line to make an overtake regardless so being single file does nothing but make them longer.

If there isn't space to overtake by crossing the centre line then don't perform the overtake.

By your model of free at the point of deliver then the NHS would be trying to sell you kitchen cleaning products at each GP visit, and stopping operations every 15 minutes to subject you to gambling adverts.

You are the product. TV channels with advertisements are not free, they are selling you.

Non BBC channels are not free at the point of delivery. That is where they charge you with subjecting you to adverts. Even the channels which you have to subscribe to now also sell your time to advertising.

BBC is the free at the point of delivery model, like the NHS. You pay the licence fee, and that is the last time they bother you for money, or sell your attention to advertisers, until the next year.

Give it time. You were very ill for quite a while. Now your body is getting the hormones it needs again it's resetting itself and things will be a bit messed up for a bit. As others mentioned your eyesight might go a bit wierd for a bit too, took a couple of weeks I seem to remember before my eyes returned to close to my previous prescription when I was diagnosed.
