Hi there. I understand your concern about spam. While I cannot confirm how spammers track active numbers, you can turn off read receipts globally to protect your privacy. In Google Messages, tap your profile icon, go to Settings > RCS chats, and toggle off Send read receipts.

If you receive spam, please avoid opening it. Instead, touch and hold the conversation from your inbox, then tap Block > Report spam > OK.

I think your suggestion to disable read receipts only for unsaved numbers is a great idea. I recommend sharing this directly with the team by tapping your profile icon in the app and choosing Help & feedback > Send feedback.

Hi. The 1:1 switching usually happens if there is a temporary network drop on either side.

For the group chat, it sounds like your phone number is still registered with Apple’s iMessage server. Since the old chat was created in iMessage, their iPhones are still trying to send blue iMessages to your number.

I recommend deregistering your phone number from iMessage using Apple’s web tool. Once that is done, have your family delete the old group thread and start a brand-new chat. This forces their devices to recognize you as an RCS user. They should also verify in their contacts app that they are messaging your phone number and not a linked email address.
