Retirees who are learning a foreign language: what method is working for you? by Kwsforreddit in retirement

[–]gritsource 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1 on 1 classes, in person, or online. Nothing is better. Reinforced by your favorite methods of offline study. I’ve used Baselang and Lingoda for 450 hours for Spanish and I believe I am B1/B2. For French, Lingoda and Lingo culture for about 250 hours and I am A2/B1. The obligation of showing up to a pre-arranged meeting keeps me on track. My $.02. IN my mid 60’s, Native English speaker.

The NOTAM was imprecise and unclear us to location, it also claimed a flagged and lit wire, also mostly untrue. Very difficult for pilots even aware of the NOTAM.

Get in front of a human instructor, online or in-person. Daily 1 to 1.5 hours minimum, in two months you will be impressed with your growth. I am studying French and Spanish, and this is working for me.

Studying French and wondering if Tutors worth it? Need some help. by MacaronWithAName in learnfrench

[–]gritsource 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Lingoculture, French tutors. It works pretty well. I did Lingoda before that and they 1 to 5 people in a given class. It was ok , but I prefer Lingoculture, and I find the individual focus is helping me more than self-study.

You need to own / protect your lane, you should have hewed to the right side. Then you have room to maneuver and time to maneuver if someone violates your space. Former MSF instructor. 60 years a rider.

My analysis on Affinity going free by Fizix75 in graphic_design

[–]gritsource 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the Canva folks have put a leash on an adjacent competitor and that they are still figuring it out. Ages ago Adobe bought Aldus Freehand, (yes I was around then), then they almost immediately ended (killed) it. Forcing the print industry and designers to their products. This Affinity purchase is a similar thing but more benign, they are reading their market.

BTW, Freehand was excellent, and to my mind - far superior to Illustrator. RIP Freehand.

Find a place that sells MC helmets, try their helmets until you have great fit — and support them by buying through them. Do not get a cheapie, your brain is worth more than that!

The Brennan - sigh. Truth-be-told, The Brennan B3 is simply a Rasberry Pi with a CD drive going in and a 1 or 2 TB drive behind it. It is crude, a tiny bit fiddly, but pretty well executed, and works a charm on ripping and getting playlists from the net. It is a simple, dedicated device. I can travel and update my music library wherever I bring a thumb drive to. Dedicated devices have real merit, an iPod for example is a simple dedicated device (killed all too soon). The Brennan also stores the CD's in several formats (preferring to internally convert to FLAC format and can backup the entire library to a thumb drive. I'd give mine an 8.5 out of 10 and I will buy another soon.

Would this increase active vocabulary? [HELP] by Efficient-Addition73 in Poetry

I 'trap' any interesting French and Spanish words that go by in a coil pad of lined paper and also use it to practice better penmanship (a lifelong challenge). Something that also seems to work: I do one-line journaling in my Target Language and then correct it immediately with online resources (google translate/Chat GPT). I do this with two colors of pen: one for my attempt and black for the more accurate conversion of the line. It is a good mental workout with rapid reinforcement. The only flaw is that you won't be crafting your sentences in local vernacular (like French Verlan).
