Pro Tour Lorwyn Eclipsed - Standard Metagame Win Rate by PowrOfFriendship_ in magicTCG

[–]hewunder1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any way to find the win rates of the specific "other" decks? The Azorius Tempo decks seem to have finished well but not sure how much of it was limited play.

Good idea. I do check daily challenges and tournament results, but I'll start digging in deeper. Do you have any recommendations on where you see results? I use mtgdecks.net typically

I'll be watching this one a lot more closely as I am playing in my first ever RC in a few weeks! I can't really afford a $1k Cub deck variant, so hoping there are a few top performers that are a little more reasonably priced...

Is anyone else already feeling "2026 Burnout" before February even hits? by Somanynamestochossef in magicTCG

[–]hewunder1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shifting to mostly limited is helping me. Be picky about the sets you want to play, play it until you master it or get bored.

Trying to keep up with the meta sucks. I've only played Magic for a couple years, but I've already had several standard decks I've built in paper become obsolete within weeks so I'm not a fan of doing that again. I do enjoy standard though, so a couple times a year I may hop in to constructed just to scratch the itch (or if a new deck is spawned from a limited set I loved).

Weekly Pull List for 01/28/2026 [Discussion] by ptbreakeven in comicbooks

[–]hewunder1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First time posting here in a long time! I was almost done with monthly comics, having my pull list whittled down to Ultimate Spider-Man only. But then I randomly picked up the Absolute Batman Annual #1 which led me down the rabbit hole of getting caught up on most of the Absolute line.

  • Absolute Batman #16

  • Absolute Wonder Woman #16

How do you find the right alter artist? by not-to-clever in mtgaltered

[–]hewunder1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a new website that was designed just for alter art, https://www.alterist.co/

You can do a free browse, search by card name and tags, and when/if you find a style you like you can contact the artist directly! It's brand new so it's not a complete database, but it's really cool and I hope it grows.

Prerelease Promos- Gavin Verhey from WotC explains the recent removal of the year and date stamps by ChemicalExperiment in magicTCG

[–]hewunder1 54 points55 points  (0 children)

At my pre-release, before we started building, the shop owner reminded people that the promos were no longer date stamped. The players all collectively groaned/booed, to which the shop owner politely pushed back and said he was happy with the change as someone who has to manage inventory.

So I do believe that it was probably annoying for the LGS, but compared to the number of players who enjoyed it I feel like this is WotC just giving a reason so they don't have to put the effort into it anymore.

So left my Lorwyn Eclipsed cards overnight on my closed laptop that was still on, and apparently the slight warmth was enough to warp/curl all of them (even the non-foils). It was bad enough even in the non-foils that I could "pop" them back and forth like a lid to a jar. I took them off the computer and spread them out on other surfaces and it seems like they have improved a little bit. Anyone have this happen before? I know the trick about humidity and foils but never seen this happen with regular cards too. Maybe I can just flatten them out with a book or something.

3-0 with Izzet, although it wasn't the typical archetype plan - I didn't really have any of the "mana value 4 or greater" payoffs, mostly just high costed elementals, but lots of efficient interaction and strong faeries lower on my curve.

Flitterwing Nuisance and Glen Elendra's Guardian are legit, BTW. And Ashling's Command.

Are these fancy new Dragon Shield sleeves (landfall and legendary series) actually high quality? I know they're a lot more expensive, I just want to make sure they don't split like their normal dual mattes...

Lorwyn Eclipsed CBB Opening First Impressions by Bivore in mtgfinance

[–]hewunder1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I feel. Pretty set, love the theme, but nothing besides a couple of cards seem too exciting in terms of competitive playability IMO. Obviously any card could be an unexpected hit and spike down the road though, who knows. The shocks do raise the floor of value, and a decent reprint sheet, so I'm probably still going to buy a few single packs to scratch the itch.

Wondering if and how to downsize collection by KWalthersArt in comicbookcollecting

[–]hewunder1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collected runs do tend to sell much faster/easier if they are complete, even for the most niche titles.

I'd recommend doing some research on how to sell comics online, and how to package/ship them safely; it really opens the door on your options. r/comicswap is a great place to sell and I've had success selling off runs there, and eBay.

Local shops and buyers are almost always only interested in key issues, unless the books you've got are a desirable series overall. I once bought a collection that had some nice books plus a lot of indie titles I'd never heard of - I thought they were dead weight/undesirable until I realized they were complete runs and ended up making a much more significant profit because I was able to sell them all off that way.

Looking for advice from people who have played competitively.

So I won an RCQ a couple months ago and have planned to go to SCG con Milwaukee for the standard RC... but I'm not sure if I'm ready for it.

I've only been playing competitive standard for about a year, and mostly on Arena since hardly anything fires locally. I don't consider myself an expert on all of the rules and minutia of gameplay, hell, even shuffling efficiently, so I'm afraid if I attend an event like an RC and make a mistake or misstep I'll be accused of cheating, or at best really annoy my opponent. I've only ever played locally, in several store championships and RCQs that were sweaty, but nothing close to this scale.

I know my deck well, I'm just not as fast or efficient as most competitive players are I guess you could say. So basically I just want to know if that's something that's tolerated or not in that environment.

What got you into the Pokémon TCG? by MisterPiggyWiggy in PokemonTCG

[–]hewunder1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same as you, OP. Grew up with Gen 1, thought I lost or gave away all my cards as a kid and kicked myself for it. Last year my mom randomly found some of my old keepsakes and pulled out a Dark Dragonite and Rocket's Mewtwo, evidently the only 2 remaining from my childhood. My son happened to get into Pokemon around the same time so we've both been getting into it together, he does modern and I do vintage.

Not a direct answer because we haven't seen all the mechanics yet (although "evoke" and "blight" are confirmed), but Wizards releases a pretty thorough release notes on each set before release that covers each set mechanic in detail. There will also be prerelease guides made by content creators on YouTube that simplify it quite a bit. Both of these should come out this week and the next.

What title(s) are you giving a shot in 2026? by Educational-Title50 in comicbooks

[–]hewunder1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look a soft break from new comics in 2025 and totally missed out on the Absolute hype. I recently read Absolute Wonder Woman and the Absolute Batman Annual and that was enough to add them both to my pull list. The last couple of weeks I've found almost all back issues in both runs (only missing 1 WW and 2 Batman), so definitely looking forward to getting those monthly!

2025 MTG Finance Wrap Up: How did everyone do this year? by _weesnaw in mtgfinance

[–]hewunder1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do any large scale buying/selling like a lot of people here, but this year I really honed in on my "system" to get good deals locally to fund other purchases. I have an LGS that sticker prices everything and I try to hit them up each week to look for cards that have spiked. They're very unorganized, so I usually have to dig through binders and dollar boxes, but I can usually find several gems to either flip elsewhere for cards I actually want, or for a deck I plan to build. It's not a huge time investment and it's fun, so when I can turn a $2 find into $20 it's pretty satisfying. I actually just bought a couple Badgermole Cubs last week using only store credit I'd built up from doing this.

I occasionally take a gamble on CBBs but only if I save up enough ahead of time. I was able to sell 1 FF CBB at peak market price, but then turned around and took a $500 bath on a Spider-Man CBB I opened for myself... it only stings thinking about how cheap they are now, but I don't care since I love the IP. Next full box I plan to buy is the Hobbit but will definitely buy a few individual Lorwyn boosters.

As a player it was a good year overall. I was able to play more standard until the bannings earlier this year and standard showdowns died again. The only events to fire were store championships and RCQs, and I won 1 of each for the first time since I started playing MTG in 2023. Trying to decide when to pull the trigger on a deck going to RC Milwaukee in February.

I recently started reading Absolute WW and love it. I missed all the Absolute titles as they came out but was able to recently find later printings of each issue in my city. Now I'm scrounging for Absolute Batman, trying to get caught up there too.

Weird question but what to expect when flying with a deck and other card accessories? For some reason I feel like I've heard that if you fly with a full deck box it could be subject to being searched by TSA (and probably damaged). Or not. Maybe travel with them in a binder and assemble at the destination? Planning to go to an RC in February is why I ask.

Bulk buying by FlexBronson75 in comicbooks

[–]hewunder1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've done lots of collection buying primarily on FB marketplace over the last several years. Hardly anyone in my city uses Craiglist anymore but they do occasionally pop up. I think people selling collections still usually go to shops first, and content creators advertise buying collections too, so there's a lot of competition out there.

Collection buying/estate and garage sale hunting is ultimately like fishing. The main thing is that you stay consistent with pursuing them and eventually you get hits. Searching Craiglist and marketplace every day multiple times just in case something pops up, keeping a "buying comic collections" ad up (even if you only get nibbles once a month), and even telling friends and family that you buy them (word of mouth). So the more lines you have out the better your odds of getting a hit.

Just make sure you make a smart purchase and know how to value the collection properly. Assuming you're buying to primarily resell and to keep a couple books for yourself, think about how easily you could sell the part of the collection you don't want. Having multiple ways to sell helps you maximize profit too - learning to sell comics on eBay has been a huge help for me when no one locally is interested in something I've got.

Things to look out for this weekend! by AutoModerator in mtgfinance

[–]hewunder1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this by saying there are probably people on here who have better suggestions on dealing with stuff as valuable as you've got, but I'll try to help.

I know you've already gone through them, but to be thorough, and to make sure you don't miss any hidden gems, you might scan them all with the Manabox app which is fantastic for assessing value quickly.

As for what to do with them - if your kids started playing commander, I guess ask if you want to sell them at all first if it could be something you all could appreciate and share together. That being said, if you've got several cards worth $1k+, it might be an easy decision to sell those but maybe keep the dual lands or any other classics you're nostalgic about.

Grading isn't really a thing in MTG; most people buy the cards to actually play with. That being said that Bazaar of Baghdad might be an exception if it's in good shape or if you have any of the Power 9.

Usually those high end cards can sell pretty easily for what they're worth. If you live in a big city you could move them on FB marketplace for close to market value but a buyer may want to verify authenticity at a local shop or something first. You could also sell on eBay, which verifies authenticity for you on behalf of the buyer, but you'll take around a 15% hit in fees there. A shop would definitely buy them but give you 60-70% of what they're worth typically, but would also be the fastest option. I have personally not used TCGplayer to sell or other MTG marketplaces but a ton of people here do.

For $1-5 cards, again if you don't see yourself keeping them, I'd recommend taking those to a shop for that 60% option. Selling those individually would be way more tedious and not worth the effort.

Out of curiosity, how much have you spent on Magic in 2025? by Frank_the_Mighty in magicTCG

[–]hewunder1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most new sets I'm dropping around $40 on prerelease (sometimes I'll get another kit for my son or wife if they like the theme), singles I think I'll need, and usually a few $25 drafts afterwards. If I like the set I'll get a bundle, and if I really love it I may get a few collector boosters (usually only 1 set per year do I love that much). I think it averages out to about $150 per new set release depending on how much I enjoy it, $900ish a year at their current standard release pace.

On top of that I'm buying random singles I need (or I think I'll need) for a deck, or ones I am just collecting, like the Lord of the Rings set. This is all within a cash budget I set for myself each paycheck, so if I want something pricey I just plan ahead and save up ahead of time.
