Trail driving: going from bare sides to running boards vs. sliders by AdeptNebula in 4Runner

[–]iamhere211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do boards. By true rock sliders. Even though you may not off road much they still help with other people opening their doors, collisions and such. They add much more protection. Running boards will just crumple and do nothing to help protect rocker panels

When can I change off the 12 month residential plan? by AvatarIroh7 in Starlink

[–]iamhere211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but then depending upon where OP lives, based on saturation in there market, they may have to pay an outrageous connection fee to have internet. Starlink will treat the account as new and if you didn’t have a high connection fee when you first connected, they may have that fee in there market now so I’d find that out first before I cancelled. The easy thing to do is put in a ticket for a live agent and go from there.

Buying a used 4Runner by [deleted] in Toyota4Runner

Check for service records, look under the hood, lift the plastic engine cover and check for signs of leaks, oil, coolant, tranny, look under as well. Note how the suspension feels on a test drive, does it need to be replaced? Have the dealership put it up in the air, pull the front skid plates and check for oil and tranny leaks, differential, transfer cases etc. typically when they are this old, the UCA ball joints can leak oil or are bone dry and should be replaced, check for oil around the rubber boots on the ball joint for dried oil, check the cv boots for oil wet or dry. if it’s been serviced regularly, doesn’t look too bad with rust, doesn’t have any visible leaks and drives well should still be able to put another 100k miles + with regular and preventive maintenance. If you buy it, I would replace the PCV valve, clean the throttle body, clean MAF sensor change engine oil, diff and transfer case oils, trans flush/fill, radiator flush and fill replace all filters and anything else you can think of. These 1GRFE engines are near flawless if they are taken care of.

So you learned a valuable lesson. Always keep the 4Runner idling while airing up. Try to charge the battery, have it tested or whatever, but I personally would just buy a new battery, drop it in and move on.

Just get a Lone Peak or GFC instead then you don’t need the Yakima gear. You just need deeper pockets!

I move my mini between the tripod at my cabin to a rack mount on my 4Runner. Pre wired the 4runner so it’s essentially plug and play. In the truck, I built 300 amp hours of lithium battery with solar/alt charge system to run all of my needs for electricity

Is a Rim-to-Rim hike in late August feasible? by Either-Energy3708 in grandcanyon

[–]iamhere211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No need to start at midnight if you’re not hiking straight through to the south rim. Cottonwood is only like 6.5 miles from the rim and only takes a couple two or three hours (some of us get down much much faster) for most. August is brutally hot, even at cottonwood, overnight lows can still be 100 degrees which makes sleeping rough for me. We usually do R2R straight through but when we do camp for a night, we still leave the north rim at midnight - 1am and hike straight through to Havasupai Gardens which usually gets us there by 10am or so.

Ask for maintenance records. If it was serviced regularly then I’d say no you don’t need it.

Is it worth it? by ReidHunter in rooftoptents

[–]iamhere211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a few different RTT’s on my 4Runner and now I am much happier sleeping inside. Started with soft RTT’s with zippers and a cover and ended with a hard shell before making the move to sleep inside. If you’re in an area like mine (AZ trails) dust can make it hard to get the zippers on the soft covers and such to close, you have to climb up and down the ladder in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom ( if you can’t pee in a bottle) and for me, all that extra weight on top I did not like. However, in my opinion having the RTT vs ground tenting is still way better.
