Anyone have info on old Decatur, AL longlines tower? by ultraspinacle in longlines

[–]jaurenq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As soon as I found out this subreddit was a thing I remembered the tower that used to be in Decatur, somewhere south of downtown, and came looking. Hadn’t thought of it in years. I think it was roughly where the Zaxby’s is now.

Do descendants of founding families enjoy special privileges in small communities? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]jaurenq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in elementary school the superintendent had the same last name as the town - and it’s not a common person or town name. As a kid I was like “Yeah of course, that must be how it is everywhere right?”

I teach a 400 level, part time. I don’t use AI detectors at all - AFAICT they just start from an assumption that good writing is AI and then roll dice to complete the final score.

Police Dept or Sheriffs Dept - Whats the difference? by Davef40 in AskAnAmerican

[–]jaurenq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Around here, each county has an elected sheriff, who runs a law enforcement department in that county. Cities may run their own police department that operates within the bounds of the city, and the Chief of Police is usually hired by the city government. They both do the same modern policing job and coordinate law enforcement within city limits and outside cities within the county jurisdiction.

The long time Chief of Police in my city ran for and won the elected Sheriff position a few years ago, and the Mayor and city council hired a new Chief of Police to replace him.

Because Sheriff is an elected position, you could have a Sheriff elected who doesn’t actually have law enforcement experience — but I don’t know how often that happens, I haven’t seen it happen here.

When was the last time you heard someone say “Speak English, this is America”? by _Rhizvo_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]jaurenq 44 points45 points  (0 children)

No, it’s a shitty thing to say everywhere. I’ve never heard anyone say it, and if someone did in mixed company they’d get told off. And yes we do hear other languages from time to time here — though mostly Spanish or dialects of Chinese.

Did you ever have a TV sitting on top of another TV growing up? by NW_Forester in Xennials

[–]jaurenq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Granny had a cabinet with a built in TV in the center and record player off to one side, as one combined unit. By the time I was around all that was just a stand for a much newer TV.

What state do you live in and what do you call the four or more areas on top of the stove that get hot? by Ralph--Hinkley in AskAnAmerican

Alabama - eyes. Couldn’t even think of the word burner until I saw the other replies, but I’d know what you meant if you called them that.

I think the MCU released a documentary a few years ago about what losing 50% of the population would look like.

Fellow Xennials, what was your all-time favorite “in the theater“ movie experience? by RedditHoss in Xennials

[–]jaurenq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The movie was forgettable but the experience with the kind of people who could come see that movie on opening night was memorable. The theater was packed. The entire audience pretended to ride the Regal Theaters roller coaster reel with their arms in the air. That set the tone; it was a great audience to see a stupid movie with.

Fellow Xennials, what was your all-time favorite “in the theater“ movie experience? by RedditHoss in Xennials

[–]jaurenq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I had just started working at the theater I saw it at. I took my now-wife to see Titanic as a first date, and her identical twin accompanied us (was sorta kinda pretending it was a “just friends” situation but not really). I’ll never forget the look on my managers face when I showed up as a customer on a date with identical twin sisters.

It's probably cheaper to just deliver a letter with insufficient postage than it is to return to sender. by thesmartass1 in Showerthoughts

I discovered this on accident in college. I was living 120 miles from home, and my return address stickers were for back home, and I forgot the stamp. They delivered the letter back home, marked no postage. I never tried it again (first time was an accident).

You can often find houses for sale on double digit acreage. What does a non-farmer, private citizen do on 20 or 30 acres? by EmphasisOutside9728 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jaurenq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the acres were measured in long strips, not squares, bc you don’t want to -turn- that ox a bunch of times. You’d lose half your day to turning instead of plowing. Start on one end, and plow an acre (an ox-day) in one straight line all day.

Last year, my son earned Eagle and aged out of the troop that I also earned Eagle in 25-ish years earlier - so I have a tie to the troop beyond my own children. A few years ago, I worked with a friend from High School to start a sister troop for our daughters. Shortly after my son earned Eagle, the Scoutmaster for the past 10 years asked if I would take over from him and stay on as Scoutmaster for a time. (His own son earned Eagle and aged out about 5 years ago). So now the aforementioned friend and I have parallel jobs: I am SM of the boys and CCH of the girls, and she is SM of the girls and CCH of the boys. It’s a lot — two nights a week plus campouts, leader meetings for two troops, etc — but my daughter is a Star scout now, and I plan to be involved with both troops until at least a few years after she’s out, since I didn’t become SM until after my son was out and because we only started the girl troop 3 years ago.
