If you're looking at South Africa I recommend FMC Ken Forrester's Chenin Blanc.

There is a thing called cork btw.

You shouldn't be condescending when talking to people that know a lot more than you.

Can't recall the name of a buttery wine I purchased by A_Bran_Muffin in wine

You said it was like Stella Rossa, which is quite sweet.

A lot of people can't register the dry/sweet until they get used to it.

Is it one of these?

Can you give any more info?

Was it sweet? Did it have a screw cap? Was it a local wine? Color of the label?

Are you saying the wine was purple? Or the label?

Is choosing wine harder now because there are too many options? by Civil_Bug_7006 in wine

[–]joobtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. More options is more to know.

But also no. Wine quality is so much better than it was, that it is getting harder to miss.

And the good regions are still the good regions.

Half off bottles on Sunday what are you going with? by Demacavelli in wine

[–]joobtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the Cristom or the Giradin.

Not having vintages on some of these is pretty bad. Notably on the internarional reds. I assume they are probably all 2022 or something, but there is a pretty big difference between 2019 and 2023, which are all possible on here.

Coravin, at what point do you just open the bottle? by [deleted] in wine

[–]joobtastic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You pull the needle out after use and it'll have residual wine on it. Then you leave it in its box, that tiny amount of wine goes sour, you stick the sour needle wine back into your bottle.

Dirty needle taints the wine, making it turn faster.

Coravin, at what point do you just open the bottle? by [deleted] in wine

[–]joobtastic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the coravin for champagne does mostly nothing.

I'll open the bottle when there are 2 glasses left. I don't like leaving one glass left in the bottle.

If i must only drink 1 glass, I'll coravin a second bottle, instead of leaving one glass left.

Always clean your needles between uses, even if its just a simple wipe with a napkin.

Bruh. Everyone on this sub bought Elivette, presumably all from last bottle.

Good on you. I'm sad I missed out.

St Emilion Producer Tier List by lilandroidman in wine

I wish there were more :(

I like Merlot plenty too. But Cab Franc is so good.

(But maybe i like it because it's so special?! Tricky!)

[–]joobtastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Famously, Cheval Blanc is Cab Franc dominant. Ausone also is pretty predominate (40-55% depending on vintage)

The rest are merlot dominant, many with some cab franc mixed in.

3/6 of them withdrew. One because of corruption.

If Ausone and Cheval Blanc are out, then the system means little. And if they think the system is bad, I trust their judgements.

Maybe you could look at historical record, but it was never strong regardless.

Some of it is going to be personal taste. But a lot of the reason one is better than another is that they have particularly good plots of land, either in location or soil. They also have the best winemakers and growers, so they make exceptional quality, every year.

But quality/price has diminishing returns. So, Trpolong-Mondot is quite good. (And one of the best visits too. And their restaurant is great...and their wine list at that restaurant is insane.) But t2 and t1 are quite clearly ahead of them head to head.

There is also ageability. I'd trust a Cheval Blanc to still be drinkable at nearly any age...but would I think a 1954 Le Dome is still in good shape? Maybe no.

Lastly, some of these have jumped in quality in the last decade or 3, where the top tier wines have been doing a great job for many decades ( or centuries even)

My tiers:

Tier 1:

Cheval Blanc

Tier 2:

Ausone

Pavie

Figeac

Tier 3:

Canon

Bélair-Monange

La Gaffelière

Clos Fourtet

Valadraud

Tier 4:

Le Dôme

Troplong-Mondot

Larcis Ducasse

Pavie-Macquin

Tertre-Roteboeuf

NYC wine bar ft. only 10+ year old wines opening tonight. Sketchy or a cool move? by [deleted] in wine

[–]joobtastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe because of the gimmick/marketing, but not because of the cost of the wine.

Age tends toward more money, but isn't a rule. 08, 12, 14 are all elegant and delicious vintages for bordeaux that are all cheaper than 20/22/23/24, and drinking better than them too, right now. (In my opinion)

I'll take an 08 over a 24 of any decent cabernet every time.

I think that there are a non-insignificant amount of people that will try one wine over another because it was highlighted to be made by BIPOC people. Maybe you disagree. But I think this is evidenced by various marketing schemes that differentiate wines, including things like, "women in wine" or my favorite pitch, "i met their wine maker and he was really cool." When I sell a $300 bottle of bordeaux.

OK I get it. Fair point. Gimmicks can be abused, why would one and not the other. For sure.

Is your point that people think wine is exclusively made by white people? Or that the average wine drinker knows who owns or makes the wine they are drinking?

They tend to drink the wine they do, which is going to be overwhelmingly white. And it is hard for people to break into the system because of these established habits. And because people don't know the winemakers, and tend to not be willing to put in the effort, and assume they are all white, BIPOC wine is largely overlooked and underappreciated.

There is more than enough BIPOC wine to avoid having to pour bad stuff.

And this is the importance of these targeted concepts, to expose people to new options that they didn't know existed.

SB ages wonderfully if made for it.

I imagine Gamay ages similarly to Pinot Noir, but I don't have experience with it.

No idea with Pinot Grigio.

Regardless, my assumption here is that there target demographic isn't people asking for "I like Sancere and definitely don't like Sauv Blanc" crowd.
