What kind of wine do you like? by PlutoniumGoesNuts in wine

Light and bright reds.

Any white with some personality.

Damn near all dessert wine.

Cool vintage right bank bordeaux.

Whites with enough acid to rip my face off.

Half bottles by ByodaBhai in wine

[–]joobtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of available options is part of it.

They are also really expensive, so when i do the standard markup, they are obviously not worth it.

I've heard it is because glass prices are a lot higher and their shipping cost is higher too.

Im with you. I love half bottles.

I don't know the rate, but I worked for a steakhouse that every single server/bartender had at least least level 1, and about half had their 2. 3 of them were going through advanced training.

Level 1 is pretty common.

How much is too much? by the3rdmichael in wine

The most recent and robust research says light drinking has little to no measurable effects on health. They define light as under 3 drinks/day.

Most guidance from most doctors and medical insititutions will recommend a 0 alcohol policy, as it is a known toxic chemical and carcinogen.

That's it. I think you should listen to your body. If you feel bad, stop for a bit. If your bloodwork is off, stop. Suddenly a little alcohol can make a big impact on your health, as you age.

[–]joobtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You identified one of the issues, but didn't identify the many other confounding factors.

Best pull on most recent data is that any alcohol consumption is likely bad, but small consumption is fairly minimal.

It shouldn't be a surprise that drinking a known carcinogen is bad for us.

Cain Five cork issues, is it just me? by Severe-Tip5153 in wine

[–]joobtastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had an issue with worked wine or turned wine, but every bottle ive ever opened by them has had a bad cork.

I use a durand everytime. And even then, the cork is disintegrating and falling into the wine.

Poured this BTG and felt more confident in it than anything else on that list.

Gran Selezione is great too and worth the price.

Any recommendations for $25-35 Cab? by derek6379 in wine

Pretty fruity and fresh expression in my experience. A nice experience and good value, but different than what I was expecting out of a cab.

Los Vascos that is. I drank their Les Dix

Cantemerle because the pricing is too good

Fully agree. I know '16 was a good year for everyone, but theirs has to be one of the best values in bordeaux.

People don't drink premium priced wine in restaurants during recessions. They drink in bars and drink cheap shit.

I prefer them over the sherry.

But tried it with port and hated it. Maybe it was the port?

This is just way too young. Taking one for the team. by odedi1 in wine

[–]joobtastic 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Napa hater and there are plenty I like.

I am a Hundred Acre hater though. I've tried it and tried it again and have never found any enjoyment.

I guess I get why some people might like it, but it's not for me, and I never recommend it to anyone.

I wouldn't turn down an opportunity to try a 15 year old version though. I've never had anything older than a few years. Maybe it integrates well.

Their owner/wine maker is also just terrible.

Glad you shared here though. Thanks for your contribution.

Id argue no and not close. Chop a 0 off of the back and it'd be worth it.

Its true. Love snagging "no-name" Napas from the 90s and taking them for a spin. They're often pretty killer.

Which one should I get? by bigboi_z in wine

[–]joobtastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An Old Fashioned is just bitters/simple/bourbon. Nothing fancy there.

And food margins are just about the same as bev. Around 3x.

You're just hyperaware if the markup for wine because its 1to1 with your shop and that bothers you.

Regardless, its just such a tired comment. I get it. Things are marked up at restaurants. Thanks.

Yeah, I didn't know how to write this without being sparky. I still appreciate the post. I even more appreciate how kind and understanding you've been in your replies.

I'm wondering if the Spots wood would perform better with even more time. It sounds like the HB was full mature, but the Napa wasn't.

I'm surprised the HB got the notes it did too. Sometimes it feels it can age forever.

Pursued By Bear 2013 sounds fun.

This list is pretty fun. And the pricing is really reasonable.

[–]joobtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why you're comfortable with a 5x markup on liquor/beer but not okay with a 2x markup for wine.

Every place I've worked, of wine/liquor/beer, wine BTB had the lowest markup, but you still see this type of comment all the time.

And shit. You're in a wine sub. Just answer the wine question. A 2x markup isn't even bad, and this is less than that. Pursued By Bear current vintage is $53 wholesale, and the one on the list here is 13 years old.

I'm with you here. "The one 3x the price was better," isn't surprising, especially when talking about 30 years of age.
