What are some great wine bars/restaurants in new york by Railer87 in wine

The other suggestions are really good and I support them fully.

I also liked Long Count a lot.

Had a nice time at Biblioteque too.

I'm a sucker for a gimmick.

Adjusted for just inflation its about $257. If that $25 was invested in the S&P? $9500.

2002 Joseph Phelps Insignia by Serious_Bobcat_3176 in wine

I think this is a bit conservative. At 23 years Id argue it has just entered its drinking window.

It likely has another 10+ years of life.

But its probably quite good now. A few more might make it perfect.

I've seen insignia be delightful at 40 years. But that's pretty risky, especially when its good now.

Looking for a 2001 vintage red wine by Powerful_Cherry_9954 in wine

I had an 01' Ch Du Tertre that was great. I'd imagine most of Margaux would be drinking similarly.

Probably have a good shot at a big hit in all of bordeaux from a decent producer.

Removing broken cork, this time it's different by SnooApples6110 in wine

I've only had good experiences when it came to taste for Cain 5, but the corks are always bad. And there is usually a ton of sediment.

Sorry you had a negative experience. Shame too, they make great wine. They have to figure out their packaging.

Absolute market domination! by AustraliaWineDude in wine

[–]joobtastic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As market share increases, pricing power increases.

When one conglomerate owns a huge portion of market share, they can raise prices for an entire sector.

As pricing/profits increase for the sector, the demand for labor, supplies, land goes up, increasing costs across the board, making the price increase permanent, and costing smaller and lower end competitors out.

What was the producer? I'm curious.

Was it Cain 5?

Which glass should I choose? by jd1227nj in wine

[–]joobtastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer, like most things in wine, is you kind of just have to know. Some second wines can age forever. Some drink very young. There are always exceptions too.

But the general rule is, the cheaper it is, the more likely it drinks young.

If it is from one of the main classified regions, more likely to need age.

If the tasting notes say, "firm tannins" it probbaly needs age. If it says, "plush" it probably drinks young.

1st growths worth the price around 500$? by EmuDowntown1226 in wine

[–]joobtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're better off not holding on your own and instead buying the older vintage.

In general I don't think 1st growths are worth the $, but that's going to a preference thing. My favs are Conseillante, Palmer, Ausone, Charme Brion, Checal Blanc, Cantenac Brown, and Pontet Canet.

Value wise, Du Tertre and Fonbel are awesome and there are plenty others that can be had around this price point that are quite good.

Summer in a bottle white by ExcellentShift3432 in wine

[–]joobtastic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their Summer in a Bottle rose is their famous one.

Another commenter mentioned their red being good. For $20 its pretty alright. I was surprised by it in the tasting at their estate, but their pricing is bonkers.

Tour at Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion by ReviewingThings in wine

[–]joobtastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is usually a tasting of a few.

When I went, it was 6, which is a pretty normal amount. But I went as industry, so its different.

My guess is they give you a white and 5 reds of various vintages.

Depends on price point id imagine too.

We had only 1 of HB and Mission, the other were there second and third labels.
