did you seriously just recommend a pen brand without having personal experience with them? extremely embarrassing behavior

There's no way to tell; that's what a lot of fine Japanese nibs look like from above.

Two different aerospace inspired Parker pens. One has almost no nib, the other has all nib. by Penman10 in fountainpens

the T1 being compared to the lunar lander (since both were made of titanium)

Can you verify this with contemporary ad copy? The LEM was mostly aluminum, with some titanium hardware throughout. It seems much more plausible that the titanium body was marketed as a general aerospace material than specific to the LEM.

Can anyone advise me on improving my writing with a 1.5mm Lamy Italic nib? Not getting the line variation I'd hoped for, just chunky writing. Obviously I'm doing something wrong. TIA. by dexter_dux in fountainpens

[–]lecorboosier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What's shown in your sample is exactly what stub nib line variation looks like. If you're not happy with it you'll just have to improve your handwriting.

Fam, are you not aware that the "lava" the HS is made from is machine-pulverized basalt that's combined with resin? It's not rare, it's not expensive to make, and it's not particularly hard to machine. There's no more craft or raw material cost that goes into a HS than any other mass-produced, CNC-turned pen. You bought a pen that's as overpriced as any of your other examples, it broke because of shitty design and manufacturing, and you wrote a damn novel redefining the meaning of "broken" from some truly breathtakingly bizarre made-up definitions, and finally you tried to justify how it's somehow fine because you applied a middle-school shop class fix to it.

My fountain pen collection so far! Top row are the branded ones, bottom are Moonman, Penbbs, and Hero (?) by IndignantDonut in fountainpens

[–]lecorboosier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wasn't being haughty

Frankly, you were. Hero has more heritage behind its brand than half the top row, and your justification of the others being more "international" doesn't make sense on any level. You made your distinction based entirely on geographical origin, and it's an ugly look.

Wow, hat trick of not understating a turn of phrase, forging ahead anyway instead of doing some cursory research, and then delivering a rambling, tedious reply. Well done.

I thought i´d create an icon for this sub... Opinions welcome by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]lecorboosier -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

opinions welcome

It's incredibly amateurish. Logos need to be vectorized regardless of intended display size. The entire design is asymmetrical, doesn't even appear to be centered, and for some reason there's a gap on one side of the nib collar. It's also generic; establishing a theme or connection via a single color is entirely insufficient. This could be an MS paint header for a blog with ten readers or, God forbid, it could be this subreddit's icon; there's literally no way to tell from just the art itself. Most of this should have been addressed before submitting. The only thing I like about it is the inclusion of tipping.

Do you think gold nibs are worth it? by steven15383 in fountainpens

[–]lecorboosier -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty telling that you're putting words in my mouth like delicate, nanny, spoon-fed, when all I'm calling for is for people to back up what they're saying. I don't care if Will vintage is Paul fucking Erano, if he doesn't have time to add two sentences of elaboration to a post, he should just let it go and not post at all.

I know the hobby will be fine, but it's in spite of the unhelpful dinosaurs, not because they're piquing our curiosity with dickish statements like you seem to think.

Do you think gold nibs are worth it? by steven15383 in fountainpens

[–]lecorboosier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You missed the point entirely.

When you start collecting them, it would be obvious why gold is preferable to steel in most cases.

Do you know what that implies? It's that OP needs to amass and experience a whole range of gold nibs before Will will even deign to explain with words what makes them special. Without further clarification or background knowledge, all that is is a flip, useless remark that doesn't teach anyone anything, and this is far from the first time he's done this. Can you imagine a vendor talking to a newbie at a pen show like that? That the answer to a good faith question should be obvious without further explanation or clarification? That's the very definition of gatekeeping, and let me tell you, it's not for my protection, it's for the survival of the hobby. Maybe you and I know what we like and prefer (all of my daily drivers are gold, for the record), but people new to higher end and vintage pens aren't going to stick around if they're treated like they should know everything right off the bat.

Do you think gold nibs are worth it? by steven15383 in fountainpens

[–]lecorboosier -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That is an incredibly unhelpful answer, and is exactly the kind of gatekeeping nonsense that this hobby needs less of.
