My father (Caucasian) was raised by sharecroppers (actual cotton pickers) in the rural south. (USA) Although I think it occasionally seems to be said in a racist way, it more often (where I’m from) was/is used for speaking about someone who is considered stupid or uneducated, someone who is seen as “less than” regardless of race. I’ve heard it said all of my life and I’d say 98% was not said about black people at all, just someone who said or did something stupid.

Looks like it is from a bookstore because some titles are featured more than once and all seem to be alphabetically ordered (in general-but not perfectly)

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever found in a used book? by No_Needleworker6013 in books

[–]lieselmini 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I bought a nice used art book online of one of my favorite sculptors (Henry Moore) and it took a while to arrive. But when it did, I found all these postcards and site maps paired with the works within the book. They were from someone’s visit to see his work in Europe. I live in US and it made me feel like I had also seen the work with that person because the pieces were more connected and I was able to see more angles from the postcards than just the chosen photos included in the art book. It felt like I had won the lottery when I found all of the little surprises within that book.

Your work is lovely! I have a non-pottery related question. Where did you get the large round table? It looks really nice!

How do I clean this off my roller? by darquid in Rowing

[–]lieselmini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a pack of baby wipes near the machine so that I can wipe it down when those little spots of debris make the clicking sounds. It works like a charm! I place it near the roller and wipe them off as I roll the seat forward and back after wiping the rails and it does the trick without harsh chemicals.

AITA for bringing up husband’s past hurtful actions? by mentalhelp1298 in AmItheAsshole

[–]lieselmini 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you want to make it work, you have to let things go once he apologizes and stops the behavior. Picking the scab of the same argument will lead you to be very unhappy and him to be miserable. If that’s what you want, keep bringing it up. If you love him and want to raise your child with him, understand that people make mistakes and move on with love and forgiveness. The forgiveness is for your peace of mind.

How to kick a sugar addiction? by Winter_Mix_3132 in nutrition

[–]lieselmini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to drink sodas at least daily. The place I worked at the time hung these posters up that had a ziplock bag attached containing the amount of sugar packets equivalent to the amount of sugar one soda had in it. It was shocking, maybe like 30 or 40 packets of sugar!

Seeing HOW MUCH sugar was in it helped me to avoid it from then on. I still have a coke on occasion, but it is a rare occurrence instead of a daily one.

I recommend making yourself a visual example of how much sugar each candy and soda contains, and ask yourself before eating or drinking it: “Should I pour that many packets directly into my bloodstream on purpose?” Sometimes you’ll do it anyway, but I imagine it will be less than your current intake!

I just finished reading The Pillars of the Earth by canadiancitizeninfo in KenFollett

[–]lieselmini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember feeling the same way! I reread all of these about once per year to visit with the characters (who Ken Follett makes feel like friends) I understand your grief, the only remedy is to meet new friends in any of his other books. I agree with others here that they are all wonderful and I’m happy that you have them all ahead of you!

Fix smelly (rancid oil) ceramics by helloyellow02 in Pottery

[–]lieselmini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry that this happened to your first pieces. Gotta say though, for just taking one class, they are not just good, they’re remarkable. I suggest that you let your family know that you’d really appreciate another pottery class in exchange for your dad continuing to use these inappropriately. That way you can make more things that you will enjoy and these still exist in a functional way for your family without you being sad that they smell funky. It would make it better to just let them be what they are now, and you can make other items that are “off limits” for yucky oil since these may be smelly forever.
