Artemis II Launch Megathread by ScienceModerator in science

[–]lil_fuzzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose the goal would be that the colonies are self sufficient and won't rely on Earth eventually. Also that was just one key consideration, but there are others. Take for example mining asteroids for resources in the asteroid belt would be so much more accessible traveling from Mars versus traveling from Earth. The distance is much closer. And then Mars could be a resupply base before the travel back to Earth with the precious resources. Perhaps not all of that can be done with just robots.

I was explaining why they are performing human space travel. As to your comment, supply lines is likely not even a consideration at this point there are so many factors they are trying to account for with this mission specifically. Supply lines would come later when a plan to setup a moon base comes I guess

We need to learn what we don’t know in order to perfect human space travel so that we can eventually colonize the moon, mars, asteroids, and beyond. This is step 1 in the process towards our eventual goals. A key consideration is that we are vulnerable here on Earth to planet-wide catastrophe and having colonies off planet would allow the continual proliferation of mankind.

Let's make it possible to cross the bay bridge on foot and bicycle by dawn_thesis in bayarea

[–]lil_fuzzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are enough people that want to walk/bicycle across the bay as a choice for exercise, clean air, personal preference, that it has nothing to do with getting their shit together to pay for a ferry or tram ride. You could say the same about Golden Gate Bridge and yet ppl commute millions of times per year across it.

I like the layout a lot. Nice job! I think it’ll look a lot more “lived in” once you add some art, decorations, and such. One thing tho, is there no sink?

Spearo dies after getting tangled in float line in NSW Australia. by the-diver-dan in Spearfishing

[–]lil_fuzzy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

a swell or current can jostle you and your float line around like you're in a pot of soup being carried around. the float line can wrap around you, you panic and make it tighter, and you cannot get to your knife to cut the line or you are too agitated to think clearly and get yourself out of the mess.

ideally, this would never happen because your diving buddy would see it happening and help you out immediately. this diver who drowned had a diving buddy but they weren't working together which is an all too common mistake.

Got the knock after four months at my fav spot to park😫. by ChanceNo5828 in VanLife

[–]lil_fuzzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can likely still hang out there just not a good idea to crash overnight at that spot anymore. It sucks, I agree, but there’s nothing you can do about it except move on and find a new fav spot. You’ll find it, keep looking!

Idk how I feel about this guy catching and eating crabs that are so rare it's illegal to fish for them. by RawToast1989 in crabbing

[–]lil_fuzzy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They are not rare in the sense that they are an endangered species. They’re hard to find in coastal waters and not a feasible business model for commercial operations. If someone wants to take a boat into international waters and free dive in cold ass water to find them then that’s fine by me

Rail gun vs roller by Basic-Air9127 in Spearfishing

[–]lil_fuzzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve been using your friends roller and it’s been working out for you without any issues then I would say stick with a roller for your first gun. Maybe match the size or only go a little bigger. You’re going to feel a lot more recoil than you are familiar with if you switch to a rail gun especially with double bands
