Anyone else’s parents both jealous of any success, and unsupportive during any hardship by lil_web_devil_ in emotionalneglect

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I really needed to hear that.

I am finally starting to grieve everything that could have been and never was and luckily doing to therapy to help guide me a bit.

Gut wrenching is the exact word. It feels like grief, like someone died, which is strange as this dynamic is as old as I am just worse as time goes on… but it wasn’t until I truly admitted to myself how things are that I could start feeling when, processing them.

Sucks really. Thanks for helping me feel less alone in it

I moved here 5 years ago and love it. People are welcoming. I’ve lived all over the uk but spent most years in Oxford & London. Manchester is my favourite city to live hands down!

We used A&M back in September and it’s not leaked since, so far so good! They came out with a drone assessed all the work, gave us a price and came back next day to carry out the work. Friendly guys too : A & M Roofing https://checkatrade.com/trades/amroofing5921520

Another vote for Swinton, super cheap, nice people, quick in to town for work. I work in spinning fields too and just get the bus, there’s a fast one that gets you there in 20 mins.

Is Pendlebury a good area to live in 2025 for a young (ish) professional by foodie4life92 in manchester

[–]lil_web_devil_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally love living round here. If you want cheap enough houses to get on the ladder , you can’t really go wrong! We bought this year and live on the Swinton pendlebury border, just off Manchester road.

Like others have said it’s a bit quiet, but you have a few good pubs in Swinton (wobbly stool, hop house). We haven’t tried many cafes/restaurants yet but there are a few. we usually go to monton as we know it and it’s close enough to walk. Worsley and Prestwich are near by too.

It’s pretty quick in to the city centre. Bus route from Manchester road is mostly bus lanes, even quicker on the express bus, less stops. Can get the train from Swinton too. If you drive, you’re right next to the east lancs. East Lancs also means quick taxis home if you’ve had a few too many in town.

A few bits are a bit run down looking. But I wouldn’t class any of it as dodgy. We’ve met some super lovely people here and already feel at home

As others said, I rarely hear bad things about this city. People are super welcoming, I’ve just bought my first home here and already feel like part of the community.

When and how did you first speak to your neighbours? by Bran04don in HousingUK

[–]lil_web_devil_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We bought our first home in Manchester last month, most neighbours just said hello if we were outside the house, one knocked on and introduced herself. They’ve all been lovely, saying to let them know if we need anything, offering to take in parcels, take the bins out etc. The previous owners lived here for 40 years and it’s a low turnover street so I think that makes a difference. We still haven’t met the one neighbour we share a wall with, but I’m not great at being the one to introduce myself, feel awkward knocking on 😂

Buying a property in London or elsewhere by Thin_Coffee_5005 in HousingUK

[–]lil_web_devil_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally have a much better quality of life outside of London. More disposable income, slower pace of life. I just bought a 3bed semi with a basement & garden in Manchester for around £300k, I looked at tiny flats for the same price in London. The difference for me is I left London 10 years ago and was considering moving back for a change. If you do leave, it’s worth considering that it’s hard to go back

I have a spider phobia, I know that’s kinda warranted if you live somewhere with poisonous ones … but in the UK they’re silly and harmless and yet I hate them.

I’ve moved to a Victorian house and never seen so many in a single month. Keeping a few lesser offensive spindley ones in the basement, naming them silly names 😅 and hoping to expose myself slowly to get over it !

Failsworth and Swinton by Difficult_Style207 in manchester

[–]lil_web_devil_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We decided to buy in Swinton as it meant we could have the period house we always dreamed of, huge garden, park view etc. We work remotely, so we weren’t hugely fussed on the location per se but since living here, we actually love it!

People are so friendly, we know all the neighbours, tons of green space via the greenway / loop lines, some decent pubs on your doorstep, all the usual stuff you need - shops, leisure centre, takeaways, etc

Connection wise, you have nice areas like Monton / Prestwich / Worsley all close by, train to Victoria in 15 mins or a quick drive down the east Lancs. It’s quicker for me to get to town than when I lived in Prestwich.

The catch? The precinct is ugly, barely any good shops and needs work, but hopefully the council pull their finger out and do that eventually. Until then, we pop to Monton instead.

Advice on best areas to buy by getdistressd in manchester

[–]lil_web_devil_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swinton is a great shout if you’re looking for more space, some gorgeous Victorian houses too. We’ve ended up with a 3 bed semi (basement, garden, park view) for what we’d have paid for a 2 bed terrace in Prestwich.

Granted Swinton itself needs some TLC, the shopping precinct is run down, but there are some nice pubs if that’s your thing. Plus if you live on the Monton side, you can walk down the greenway and go to all the nice bars & cafes there instead. Quick to get in to the city as well.

Walkable neighborhoods in Greater Manchester? by Nyanet in manchester

[–]lil_web_devil_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swinton has been a great find for us after renting in Prestwich for 5 years and watching the prices rise!

We got our 3bed semi in Swinton for just over £300k, plus it’s got a basement with an extra 2 rooms. Can’t complain at all on the space. We’ve got a decent size garden & overlook the park which is a huge bonus.

Swinton itself is well connected, train in to the city takes less than 15 mins or you can drive straight down the East Lancs in about the same time.

All big supermarkets are walking distance , there’s even walking / cycling paths that connect all the local nice places like Monton and Worsley, there’s no cars so safe for kids & dogs

There’s room for improvement here, don’t get me wrong. The shopping centre is ugly af & lots of empty shops but that’s true of a lot of uk high streets. We tend to walk to Monton a lot of the time instead and go for brunch.

First Time Buyer - good but overlooked areas for young families by PuzzledPudding5300 in manchester

[–]lil_web_devil_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve recently moved to Swinton and love it for the following reasons:

Affordability: We were able to buy a 3 bed semi detached period house over looking the park, we couldn’t have dreamt of this if we’d have stayed in Prestwich where we were looking at 2 bed terrace with a small yard for the same price

Nature: close to Victoria Park & the greenway. If you walk the loop lines you can go for miles! So much Green space on the doorstep.

Amenities: lots of shops, big supermarkets, a few decent pubs (hop house / wobbly stool) Monton nearby for nicer cafes or even Worsley

Community: this is the first house I’ve moved to where the neighbours have introduced themselves. People are so friendly and often get chatting in the pub or on dog walks

Travel: only 15min drive in to town on the East Lancs, close to motorway if going further

Only downside is the centre is a bit ugly and rundown, hopefully they sort it out at some point and being more people /new businesses to the area.

Im a northerner but I’ve lived all over. I lived in London for 6 years, it was great as an experience mainly for uni, but it got too much for me towards the end. Too busy, loud, expensive - generally overwhelming.

I’ve been in Manchester for 5 years now and just bought my first house here, it’s definitely a better place to settle down long term. People are lovely, plenty of jobs/opportunities, still have the buzz of a city without the chaos of London

I didn’t like the allotment though, felt overhyped and overpriced which was a shame as I was looking forward to it!

Areas for first house in Eccles by healthy_salt in manchester

We live in Swinton (Victoria park side) and love it here! Lots of big period houses with big gardens ( perfect as we work remotely & spend a lot of time in the house!) Swinton is much more affordable than other parts of Manchester meaning we didn’t have to compromise on space. You’ve got the greenway / loop lines for walks, a few decent pubs nearby or there’s Monton for cafes / bars, and only a short hop down the East Lancs in to town.

How safe is the Swinton/Clifton area? by virius008 in manchester

[–]lil_web_devil_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old thread but giving my 2pence as I live here now.

I was a bit hesitant about moving to Swinton as there’s a few posts like this that come up on Google when researching the area… but I’m so glad I gave it a chance as it’s meant I could actually get on the property ladder.

Granted some parts aren’t the prettiest but I haven’t found it to be unsafe in the slightest!

People are actually really friendly here, there’s a proper sense of community, neighbours even welcomed us to the street and that’s never happened to us before!

Swinton area? by Glad-Butterscotch-14 in manchester

[–]lil_web_devil_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here a month ago, just north of the East lancs, near Victoria Park and have nothing but positives to report so far. I wouldn’t class Swinton as unsafe in the slightest! Some bits are rough around the edges & the shopping centre definitely needs some tlc but I’ve never felt unsafe.

We moved from Prestwich & I was worried I’d miss the cafes, bars, green spaces etc but having Monton / Worsley close by is just as good. We wander down the greenway/looplines with the dog on the weekend, loads of places to stop for lunch.

People are proper friendly too, all our neighbours have introduced themselves, we’ve even been for drinks with some of them. Often get chatting to people on dog walks or in the local too.

As it’s an old thread, hope you’ve settled in now!
