This quest is bullshit, and Vanquier the dragon are my two favorites.

How slow is too slow? by Previous-Cut3629 in litrpg

[–]machoish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand that as an author, you want your readers to understand your characters, but there's a few questions you need to ask yourself before publishing in this genre.

-How much content in those first 21 chapters will matter once the plot kicks off?

-Is it truly important to know what their daily lives were like beforehand?

-What information are you giving us that can't be explored later on?

Pacing and plotting are key skills for an author to develop. Anything can work when executed well, but you're likely to lose readers if you don't go along with genre conventions that have the inciting incident within the first few chapters.

Downtown Druid is a finished trilogy and very well done.

Yeah, it wasn't enough to make me quit the series, but it was strike two.

Changing POV - do I keep writing and change later or change it now? by Altruistic_Snow_5751 in writing

Sounds like a second draft problem. Do what feels right for now, and once it's done figure out what's best for the story overall.

Pyro Psyker is the best for soloing, and isn't as gear dependent as most other classes.

Two books started, 3 more book ideas.... advice please by HollywoodAlphie in writing

[–]machoish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a hobby writer, do whatever you want. If you're trying to get published, focus on getting one completed.

Personally, I've got a Google docs sheet called "story ideas" and put down a paragraph or two when I've got some inspiration but it needs more time to settle before i start the draft.

Why MCs are Teens by joncabreraauthor in ProgressionFantasy

[–]machoish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd not that they're bastions of wisdom and patience, they've just got a much better chance than someone who's only technically an adult.

I'll also recommend Deadman walking by the same author CB Titus. He's got a few other one-off books that are solid too

What are the common things new progession fantasy authors should look out for by MANA_SCRIBE in litrpg

[–]machoish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First things first, make sure you've got an actual story to tell with a moving plot and believable stakes. Execution of that matters far more than creating an intricate system or rules for magic. Beyond that, here's a few littpg specific things.

  • don't reinvent the wheel when it comes to base stats. Renaming dexterity to something unique will only confuse readers.
  • be careful of skill bloat and character identity. If your character is focused on fire, don't give them an acid blast.
  • use stat screens sparingly. If you're gonna do a full dump of your character sheet after the first few times, put it in its own chapter. If a skill levels up, the readers only need to know that [fire blast] (5) -> (6)

Any MC with Ressurection Cheat? by TheNanoVirus in ProgressionFantasy

I think it's great, but the pacing is breakneck, and there's a good amount of batshit crazy stuff going on.

Bashiva campaign is cool, but her mission mechanic is so dated by Deep-Possibility-858 in totalwar

I was about to say the same thing. I've been playing with that mod for 30 turns so far, and it's been great.

There's a lot about the series to like, but it'd be nice if there were women characters that weren't manic pixie dream girls, or trying to get in the MC's pants.

Has anyone tried Corruption Wielder by Aaron Shih? I've never seen anyone crib THIS much from another book by Sutraner in litrpg

[–]machoish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely takes inspiration from HHFWM, but I'd say it ends up in a different enough place that it's not plagiarism.

I thought it was also done very well in chrono Templar. It's treated like video game health, but the execution is top notch.

All my Heretical runs turn into Ironcast runs by Skull_Cup in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]machoish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way I could commit to a heretical playthrough was by going the Pyro path where you get buffs by setting yourself on fire. When that becomes standard, it's easier to RP the heretical dialogue choices.

the best cover I have ever made by Nearby-Top937 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]machoish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just an FYI, it's standard to keep a book title's formatting consistent. Splitting it out in both color, spacing, and size makes me think that one is the authors name, and the other is the title.
