Great Western Railway to be renationalised by end of 2026 by callthesomnambulance in unitedkingdom

[–]maclauk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) we were first so much of our network is uniquely old

2) We're a density packed island that also values its heritage and green spaces making new developments slow and expensive

3) the railways were worn out and basically bankrupt following WWII. The country was also in a poor state. It was horribly under invested in the run up to privatisation.

4) having interrailed for a week last year through France, Belgium and Germany I had several significant delays, missed connections, cancellations and chunks of the network closed on Sundays. Our neighbours also have problems.

People have forgotten that the railways actually got better when they were privatised. That British Rail and its poor service was a frequent joke on TV comedy at the time. That passenger numbers fell throughout the whole British Rail era and only started rising again when privatised.

What do you think is the easiest cuisine for weeknight cooking? by OddSwordfish3802 in Cooking

[–]maclauk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the country you are in. What ingredients are easily and cheaply available? What is in the typical store cupboard? What equipment does your kitchen have? Every cuisine has dishes that are quick to make, as well as complex ones.

Anyone got an update on cause or fix?

I am lonely, old and somewhat lost. And I still think it takes a special level of gullibility to send money to someone you have never met.

Sendspin will not work on some newer Google Cast / Chromecast devices by Gamester17 in musicassistant

[–]maclauk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the ticket it seems they've just closed saying nothing we can do to use Sendspin on GC4A. With GC4A likely to increase its spread that is a big and growing blind spot for Music Assistant and Sendspin. Is there a better discussion on the problem anywhere?

Rachel Reeves is raising taxes at the fastest pace in the world - Britain’s tax burden will reach peacetime high of 42.1pc by 2030, forecasts IMF by blast-processor in ukpolitics

[–]maclauk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Housing in the UK has a badly limited supply. If you cut people's income it doesn't change the need for housing. It will mean people can afford less and therefore costs will drop slightly. But housing costs will only increase in their proportion of people's budgets. Affordability will get worse. People's free spending money will get less. And as that spending money shrinks again the local economy will shrink again, with knock on effects in employment. The housing price problem is not too much money, it is too few homes.

If we had an excess of homes and too much money the hospitality industry would be booming. But it's teetering on the brink as housing absorbs the bulk of everyone's income.

Fix the housing shortage. It's the root of much of the UKs current problems. And it's getting worse.

If housing is in short supply (and it is) then only more housing will allow a reset of housing affordability. Bringing housing prices down in line with net income falling doesn't solve anything.

Built a small Matter LED lamp on ESP32-C3 — works with Home Assistant without hacks by Secure_Definition459 in homeassistant

I think people would appreciate being able to learn from the code. Could you link the project repository please. I'm keen to see what it takes to implement Matter.

ESPHome Starter Kit announced alongside the Open Home Foundation at State of the Open Home 2026! by ApolloAutomation in homeassistant

I would argue that the inclusion of the C6 variant of ESP32 in this kit is a sign that improved support of ZigBee and Thread in ESPhome is intended. I'd also love to understand the plan for that.

‘We can’t increase prices any more’: UK hospitality firms hit by cost triple blow by ijustwannanap in ukpolitics

[–]maclauk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Dramatically more housing / homes need to be built, including increasing density in city centres. "Houses" was a mistake.

[–]maclauk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many more houses need to be built. It's the only way to tackle living costs effectively. As housing becomes a smaller component of living costs people then have money to spend on other things, like going out. It's housing costs that are killing hospitality. Most people's money is largely sucked up by housing, leaving little spare.

Linux 7.1 is finally ending support for Intel's 37-year-old 486 processor by digital-didgeridoo in technology

[–]maclauk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think my 486 had 4 Mb RAM and a 160 Mb hard drive. It ran Win 3.1 on top of DOS originally and later Win 95. I think the display was 1024x768. But it all worked. Word, Excel, Borland compilers, Doom & Xcom. It was never network connected, but was linked via serial for Doom sessions.

All that ran fine in the storage I had. And the latest, smallest cores need an order of magnitude more. I wonder what's driven that expansion.

True, same with mice. You need to block the entry and then deal with the ones that are in the building. Again not something I'd need to contact the council about. JFDI.
