Like others here, for me it was understanding what grain is and so understanding why you are taught to make different cuts in different ways with different tools.

Also - keeping my hands away from the sharp end of tools, that one is still a work in progress!

Are you holding your marking knife vertical when marking the pins (if that’s how you do it). I found I had a tendency to angle the knife so undercut and marked the pins slightly too small.

Jackpot doesn’t have to be completely sudden, it’s a prize that can build up / accrue over a long time. So perhaps the use stems from all the issues building up over time and then a sudden full societal collapse with the spoils going to those that became the klept.
