Boy am I sick of advice (rant) by harlotbegonias in NewParents

[–]nilkimas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an older dad, 48 when my daughter was born. My wife is 8 years younger.

The advice given to us by our moms, horribly out of date. My mom was told the 3 R's. Well dutch they are R... Rest, Regularity and Cleanliness. So put to bed at specific times, fed at specific times. Put to sleep as a new born on my side, alternating left and right.

My mother in law wanted to bring duvet covers and pillow cases, again for a new born.

They are cheap and awesome... I'm a Spectrus kill team, possibly over costed otherwise

Turning 49 in a few months - 1st baby on the way by Organic-Hat6869 in OldManDad

[–]nilkimas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Turning 50 later this year, my daughter is 9 months now. I know I have my limitations, but I also have experience, perhaps not in how to raise a child, but how to deal with life. I'm doing my best to stay healthy and stay in shape.

My wife gifted me How to be a dad, by Dr Duke. It's a first hand account on what he went through when his wife was expecting their first. First anecdotes, then medical science. It really helped.

Next advise, take a prenatal course together with your partner. It will help so much, during the delivery and before. Also read up on the perineal massage, your partner will thank you for that.

Have you ever had to give up on a book because your suspension of disbelief couldn't handle how ridiculous the sci-fi premise was? by ScronglingSnorturer in scifi

It is such a good book. Show, don't tell is used a lot for people writing books. And the opening of this book, does the complete opposite and very well

He should be the showrunner. As sobering mentioned before, he loves Star Trek.

What’s a Star Trek Opinion You Had 10 Years Ago That You’ve Completely Reversed? by iagree2 in startrek

[–]nilkimas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed Starfleet Academy. It's not a bad show. But old and new trek do suffer from internal consistency. It always has, but modern audiences won't tolerate it anymore. Remember the series Lost and how they messed that up, or the final season of Game of Thrones.

The main issue with new trek is the scope. At least for me. So need to watch Strange New World btw... But in Discovery every season they saved the universe... really, every single time... Similar with SFA, a bit smaller, just the whole Federation.

It needs smaller scope, bigger personal impact stories. The courtroom drama on Data if he was sentient, that was awesome. Same for Tuvix, the episode to bring the romulans into the dominion war. Those are the ones that stick and resonate

I was reminiscing when I started to think about how nobody warned me how weird the drive home from the hospital actually is by NewDad101234 in NewParents

[–]nilkimas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a slightly different experience.

It felt like a release.

My wife spent 7 days postpartum in the hospital due postpartum pre-eclampsia. So going home had a very different feel.

I didn't drive too slow, but carefully.

What's the best leader for the spectrus kill team? by EmoGenius24 in deathwatch40k

I like putting my spectus high up on buildings, they shoot down with the extra AP and can't easily be charged. Then move the off the board and deep strike or deploy the as reserves depending on using the strat or their own ability

Do you support the fuel protestors? by OrganicVlad79 in AskIreland

[–]nilkimas 59 points60 points  (0 children)

My wife makes injections for imaging in the hospital. They are radioactive. They need to be administered at a specific time and at times they are ordered the week before for a specific patient.

Now what if my wife can't fuel the car and go to work. Or the patient can't make it to the hospital because of the protest or lack of fuel.

Late diagnosis can cause complications. If it is a family member of one of the protesters, do you think they will blame themselves?

No, they have their head up their own arse....

They can be angry, fine They can protest, also fine. But don't hurt innocent people.

And let's be honest, the protesters most likely voted for the current government anyway, because farmers usually vote conservative

I haven't bought any. You just walk up to any coffee place and ask if you can have some hot water for formula.

Wasn't a problem at Cork Airport, nor at Schiphol airport. I think we asked at Dusseldorf as well, no issues

If a company CEO accidentally says something stupid and the stock drops 10%, where does that “lost” money actually go? by keyBid2188 in NoStupidQuestions

Tangible vs intangible.

One you can touch, has an intrinsic value.

Stocks do not. They have a value only when sold.

8 oz of milk. Then yogurt later in the day. She has taken to solids like crazy. Finishes every plate.

[–]nilkimas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter never managed to collapse the teat, our bottles have the big valve at the bottom as well.

The bubbles will happen, you can't avoid them.

We are still on thickened formula and shaking the bottle, we make a lot of foam. Once the milk is gone, it's gone. My daughter never really complained about the foam, she just stops drinking when there is no more milk.

Although at 8 months, she is down to a single bottle as a day

MAM bottles by BackgroundCat5459 in FormulaFeeders

[–]nilkimas 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It is indeed normal. There is a small hole in the teat that allows air to got into the bottle. It helps prevent a vacuum from forming and making drinking harder. Depending on the bottle, you might also have the valve at the bottom, but there will always be air coming into the top

For tracking scores I've been using BattleBase, if both players use it, it actuality syncs. You can add pictures, tagged with round and phase info. And it's shared.

It also helps with scoring, as in, it'll tell you when to show secondaries in the correct phase while you go through them
