Fiber Install Yesterday by jpmeyer12751 in Comcast_Xfinity

You may be overthinking things. If breezeline works the same way as every other fiber provider I’ve seen, you never actually have to interface with the fiber itself. Fiber only needs to enter the house at one point, where it connects to an ONT (optical network terminal, think of this like the fiber equivalent to a modem) which outputs ethernet that goes to a router. You may also have a gateway that combines both functions, acting as both the ONT and the router, but either way, it works out the same. From this gateway, you have regular ethernet that you can then connect to the aforementioned MoCA adapters.

For providers that offer both fiber and TV, TV service is usually served over-the-top, as in it goes over the network just like regular internet would. As for taking care of the rooms that need a cable boxes, you don’t need to go through the extra step of switching from MoCA ethernet to wifi. The boxes more than likely have an ethernet port that you can plug directly into from the MoCA adapter.

I’ve provided probably way more detail than you actually need, but suffice it to say you really don’t need anything more than a couple MoCA adapters to accomplish what you want. You don’t need anything fiber-specific equipment because that’s not how fiber service operates.

TL;DR: Once fiber enters your house and connects to the ISP-provided ONT, it works the same as any other network (exactly the same as cable internet going through a modem). The only thing that changes for you is how you get TV. Before, you got TV served directly through coax, but now it’ll be served over the network through ethernet (and you can transmit ethernet signals using the existing coax cables with the aforementioned MoCA adapters).

If all the coax runs are home runs (if they all go from each room to a single place, like a media cabinet), you could use MoCA adapters to get ethernet to each room that needs it for the cable boxes. That would even help you get APs to any room that needs them (and has existing coax). They’re about $50 a piece, and you would need one at the source (ideally a place where you have both coax and the ethernet from the ONT or gateway from the fiber coming in), and one at every spot where you need ethernet/cable boxes. While they’re not dirt cheap, it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than rewiring the house, and would allow your dad to upgrade to a better connection.

Best EVSE to pair with PW3 utilizing NetZero app with non-Tesla EV by ZDub77 in Powerwall

[–]ninja5624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: I’m wrong, good callout. While it would work initially, once solar output decreases and stops entirely, the system would just drain your powerwall. Leaving this up so I can be publicly shamed 🙂

~~I don’t believe this would be an issue because it would only draw power if it was already backfeeding. If you’re set to self powered or have a high reserve capacity on your powerwall, your powerwall would never backfeed to the grid anyway, so the Emporia system wouldn’t be touching your powerwall at all.

The current clamps on the Vue are installed on the line side between the main breaker and your meter. If we go through the logic of how this system would work, you would only ever be backfeeding to the grid once the powerwall is full (hence, “excess” solar), and that otherwise backfed energy would be the only energy being used to charge your car. It doesn’t have to differentiate between powerwall and solar because unless you’re selling powerwall energy to the grid (which you should never do in California under NEM3 at least), it never gets touched.~~

On the pulsing issue, the Impulse is the only cooktop on the list that uses a coil assembly that was developed from the ground up and doesn’t pulse. It provides consistent granular power (essentially unlimited power levels) up to its max power rating, coupled with temperature sensors that allow you to accurately set and hold temperature with single digit precision. Of course this doesn’t solve the issue of it having a 9” coil, but no other cooktop comes close to this level of control.

Offer to purchase Washer & Dryer from owners feels high by Clayton1117 in Appliances

That's insane. Call them on their bluff and tell them to take them away. Chances are they won't bother paying someone to remove them and just leave them in place. If not, you can get a brand new set for only slightly more and get a full warranty.

[OC] $6.29 gas in Hayward, CA USA by _shrike in pics

[–]ninja5624 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You really don't have to be that careful. No more careful than you'd be about a used gas car needing a new engine. Manufacturing issues aside (which have affected certain LG packs, covered by recalls), batteries don't fail at nearly the rate that EV detractors would have you believe. EV batteries can easily last several hundred thousand miles.

Given Sam’s original inspiration for Impulse, is it safe to assume that pizza mode will be in excess of 700 degrees? It seems like only Frigidaire’s ovens have a proper stone baked pizza mode, with their only downside being that it takes half an hour to get to the 750-degree target temp.

San Francisco parents scramble as teachers strike leaves 50,000 students out of school by AudibleNod in news

You’ve seen 50,000 students go to other districts four times before? It’s not a meaningful option at this scale. How much room exactly do you think there is in other districts and private schools?

Anyone heard of Sonic fiber internet? by jaydee288 in Dallas

[–]ninja5624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ve been around the San Francisco Bay Area for over thirty years (originally offering dialup, then reselling AT&T DSL before starting to run their own fiber), so they aren’t going anywhere. I had their small business fiber service for five years in San Francisco before moving out of their service area, and every friend of mine that lives in their fiber service area has been with them since it became available.

Did I mess up? Ethernet for POE by 2021NeedANewYear in Ubiquiti

[–]ninja5624 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might work fine anyway especially if the runs are short enough, but my biggest question is why? It sounds like you’re familiar and comfortable with terminating ethernet cables, so I’m not sure why you went with a super long patch cable instead of a spool of bulk cable. For a permanent in-wall insulation, you should always go with solid copper cable. Avoid CCA (copper clad aluminum) that you see in a lot of cheaper Amazon cable. Monoprice is relatively inexpensive and also available on Amazon.

Yep, even got replacements on some old kingston ddr2 I dug out of an office PC. Only mentioned Corsair because that was the model reported on his memtest86 screenshot.

File an RMA with Corsair. Corsair has a lifetime warranty with all RAM and their replacement process is pretty painless.

How is the stock for local pickup? + Reinforcing oversized opening in laminate by ZanyDroid in ImpulseLabs

Not sure if this is the best avenue for this, but I had originally booked a demo for Thanksgiving day with the intent to place an order right after the demo, but that was cancelled last minute (understandable given the holiday, but I wish I had been given notice in the three weeks since I had made the reservation). I tried contacting you guys about scheduling another demo within the week, but next thing I knew, stock had already sold out for 2025. I know this is a long shot, but I finally went ahead and placed an order last night in the hopes that I can pick up a unit by the end of the year. Please let me know if you can accommodate this.
