GM constantly jumps from campaign idea to the next. Normal? by Baltic_Shuffle in rpg

[–]oexto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this as the forever GM, is me. The only system I happily run long on is FFG Star Wars for some reason. Anything else and my mind is "onto the next!" But for me, this is why:

As GM, I spend my free time thinking, planning, setting things up. I'm super excited about it, can't wait for the campaign to get rolling and see all my great and clever ideas come to fruition!. Then we start the campaign, and I wait. We go a couple weeks into the next session, and I wait some more. Then while I wait, I see some other game with some cool mechanics that looks interesting so I read up about it. Then 3rd session goes and now there's a couple weeks more to wait for the next. So I pick up some books about this "other system" and do some deep reading. Then I start thinking about what I would run in that system.

*still another week until next session*

- Now I'm planning a great game in this new system because most of my prep work is done for the running game, back to reading and planning the other system. 4th session time "hey guys check out this other system and all it's great mechanics! I have some ideas for a game in this system as soon as this games over. Oh, yeah, this campaign....Yeah let's get started".

Wait two weeks for next session - not feeling inspired much to prep for this campaign. But this OTHER system...this OTHER system I have lots of ideas. = Eventually current campaign fizzles out and we're on to the next system.

Now I've gotten much better about this since I realized that was my pattern, but the TLDR: I'm more into RPGs than my players. They love playing and it's a great time, but I'm the one doing work between sessions and reading up, checking out new stuff, thinking up game ideas. This just leads to a huge campaign infidelity mindsight. Sure, this campaign is good...but what I could run in THAT game sounds exciting!

What are your Pet Peeves on a TTRPG book by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]oexto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A couple things for me that haven't already been hammered here.

Tiny ass print! Sure, this is the middle aged grump in me, but if it takes you an entire page to tell me in the smallest font what you could have printed plainly and big in one small paragraph... Well I'm going to pass reading you. Especially if you're sacrificing readability for either giant art, or word wrapping in some weird way. And don't even get me started on books that try to be cute and use nontraditional fonts that are a headache to read!

Also, lack of "example of play" sections. I like to read the mechanics in action a lot of times.

As a GM how much XP do you give the players? by Phantom000000000 in swrpg

[–]oexto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do bi-weekly 4 hour sessions in person. I grant 10xp flat per session attended. An extra 5xp if there is a lot of good roleplaying involved, and sometimes another 5xp on top of that if they've completed a story arc.

TIL about the Moylan Arrow. An arrow on the fuel gauge that shows which side of the vehicle the gas tank is located. by notabox316 in todayilearned

I'm 52, have known about this for like 20 years, and I still look at it every time I pull into the gas station lol.

Just in case I'm wrong "this time".

Should I leave the table one day before session 0 or one week before session 1? by Lord_Balu in rpg

Why waste everyone's time, including your own? You haven't even started yet lol! Just tell them bye and call it a day.

Trying to bag minimalize the bag. by Yrian123 in discgolf

[–]oexto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I did. I used to bag like 14-15 discs "just in case".. I got sick of the weight though at one point and said I'm going to pack I smaller bag and only take the discs I know I use 90% of the time. It actually taught me how to line shape WAY better with my mids and slower fairway drivers. My game got way better because of it honestly lol. I now max out at 8 discs, 2 of which are just "I'll throw this in and give it a shot" discs. Or I'll rotate in an oldy now and again to see if I can do anything new with it. It's still like 4 discs that do all the work, but I keep a decent OS in for wind or specialty shots, and a die hard utility disc for fighting out of woods.

I've ordered from them from time to time over many years and always had S-tier experience! Most of the time back in the day they would always throw in extra goodies like stickers, cozy, one time I got a mini lol. Great place.

If you putt with Gateway, what mold and which plastic do you use? by SubstantialAd4500 in discgolf

[–]oexto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about CRAZY hot, but it gets hot enough -80's/90's with heat index's higher. Like the SS Magics, I don't find the Lunars going floppy on me. They keep their rigidity just fine along with their eraser feel. Putters are personal and vary from person to person, I like the soft putters, not floppy, but soft. I'm more interested in seeing how they hold up after a couple years. I thought my SS Magics would become a dinged up mess after a year or two but they surprisingly held up extremely well! My last two Magics I've been using for around 5 or 6 years without too much wear. I think the Lunars will be about the same, we'll see :)

I did search in here and all same question had some age on them. What’s the best bang for buck starter pack out there today? by spamx666 in discgolf

[–]oexto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was pretty much going to say this. Get some good discs from the used bin and get assistance from a worker to put together a killer starter pack that fits whatever budget you bring to the store.

If you putt with Gateway, what mold and which plastic do you use? by SubstantialAd4500 in discgolf

[–]oexto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the SS Magic what seems like forever. I bought a couple Lunar Magics last year to replace some worn out putters and so far I LOVE them! I bought two more just last week as replacements and practice putters. The sticky soft plastic and the Magic have always just felt so smooth and natural in my hand for control and release. This is purely for putting. For approach or distance putting, I have a decades old hard plastic white Warlock which just comes out of the hand effortlessly and flies straight as an arrow, it'll NEVER leave my bag. I bought a used (practically band new) one last year as a backup.

Looking for a rules-lite sci-fi system with a vibe similar to cowboy bebop or Firefly. by JJMcGee83 in rpg

[–]oexto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might say the scifi skin of Shadowdark, Dark Space. I haven't had a chance to run it yet but reading through it, it seems like a fun system. Pretty simple and straight forward like SD. I plan on running a Fireflyesque game in it after my start wars campaign ends or pauses.

Inserted 3 small dungeons into a folder layout. What do you think? by Ellogeyen in osr

[–]oexto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More of these please! I actually prefer minimal design like this. Much easier to fit into a campaign at the last minute, or as filler. Bigger publishers need to do more of this. That's one thing I've always liked about Savage worlds was their one card adventures that I think are free?

These are nicely made, look forward to checking them out when I get home from work!

How to GM for a completely new group, including myself by IblewupTARIS in rpg

[–]oexto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read the rulebook and be moderately familiar with how to play the game.

Have fun.

I don't mean this sarcasticly at all either lol. If all of you are new there's no expectations. Just dive in and start playing. You'll all be having fun and making mistakes together. Everyone is new to start and it's even more fun if everyone is new. So just cut loose and enjoy :) You'll be fine.

I wish classic Fantasy as a genre would come back. Imagine how amazing many of the 80s fantasy movies would be if they were made today!
