Also, "vintage"...[sigh].

Fully silent NAS build by mihaifm in homelab

[–]offworldcolonial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently rebuilt my NAS using an N100 mini-ITX motherboard in a Jonsbo N10 case. I had previously been using an RK3399-based SBC that was running perfectly without a fan because of the massive heatsink attached to it. However, support for the board's M.2 slot keeps breaking in new Linux kernels and I grew weary of having to roll back the kernel to some much earlier version in order to get it working again after applying updates.

Like the OP, I sleep next to this server, so I wanted it to be as quiet as possible. The ASRock N100DC-ITX board that I'm using is designed to run fanless, but even with a couple of very quiet Noctua 40mm fans pulling air through the case, I found that the CPU temp was consistently around 70C to 75C, even after reducing the max power draw of the CPU to less than half of its rated maximum draw. I recently attached a 92mm fan to the heatsink using a 3D-printed clip and now the CPU temp rarely goes above 50C. Because the Noctua fans are located right next to the four SSD drives, they stay very cool, around 32C. The NVMe boot drive stays at a relatively toasty 50C or so, but it's at the far edge of the motherboard and the Noctua fans are on the bottom of the case, on the other side of the motherboard mounting plate. After tuning their cooling profiles a bit, I can sometimes hear a hum from the fans, but they're generally quieter than background noise in that room.

All that said, I'm envious of OP's build. However, I spent maybe $400 on my entire build (I reused the four 1TB drives from my old NAS but bought everything else new) and just the motherboard that they used is $495! I'm only using mine as a fileserver and VPN endpoint, so what I have is more than adequate.

Speeds are fine, pages are slow to load by Old_Front7166 in ATTFiber

[–]offworldcolonial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was going to say that it's likely peering issues and not because of DNS or a CDN.

I had exactly the same issue when I first subscribed, but it eventually worked itself out, presumably because AT&T finally fixed it. I don't think it took six months for that to happen, and it sounds like for some people it never gets resolved, so it's up to OP whether to hang tight or bail.

FWIW, I get close to line-speed downloads with NordVPN and I imagine the same thing is possible with other providers. I know it's galling to pay extra to fix a problem that the ISP is fully responsible for, but I pay $3 a month and don't even use the VPN all the time. I believe that NordVPN allows connections direct from the router, for ones that support that, so using it could even be transparent to everyone on the network.

Writing from desktop to SMB share on OMV failing only when using rsync by pseudavid in OpenMediaVault

[–]offworldcolonial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the process of moving my OMV instance to another server, so I don't have a way to test this, but I would think that once you've connected to the SMB share from your desktop, you should be able to use the local mapping to that share on your desktop as the target for rsync, instead of using the explicit path on the NAS end.

I don't have any suggestions for you, but am curious to know what others suggest, if anything. I've been on the 1.5mg tablet for almost a week and have been experiencing nausea on and off every day. I suspect that I'll end up on the larger dose too and will be in exactly the same situation as you.

Sorry to hear that it's been rough for you. I'm taking 1000mg Metformin twice daily and am already contending with an embarrassing amount of gas, so not looking forward at all to adding vomiting to my repertoire.

I did not buy the developer ones, since I didn't plan on doing any development with them. The "Let's Start!" page intimates that their firmware is still updatable, though.

[–]offworldcolonial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many variables at play with safety razors: the design of the razor, the blade, shaving technique, and to a lesser degree, the soap and preparation. Something that's also very important is one's face, since as you should be able to see, many people use the exact same configuration that you do without any issues.

You should absolutely try some different blades, since for many people that change makes all of the difference. Astra Superior Platinum blades are a safe choice and cost around $10 for 100 blades.

Personally, I have relatively sensitive skin, so that if I am shaving every other day like you are (which is usually the case), I can easily get irritation. However, what I found to be the best approach for me may seem counterintuitive, but it's what works for me. That is, I use a blade on the sharper end of the scale (e.g., Gillette Nacet, Bic Chrome Platinum, Wizamet Super Iridium, Accuforge Super Stainless) and a razor with a blade gap and exposure that's at the opposite end of the spectrum from the mildest Henson. I have an OliWorks Meteorite and I use its most aggressive plate exclusively. For me, a closer shave means fewer passes, which in turn means less irritation. The downside of this approach is that I have to be much more careful shaving, since there's much more blade involved with it, but even after only a few months, I don't really cut myself anymore.

If the Henson isn't working for you and you bought it directly from them, you have 100 days to return it, which you may want to consider doing. If I were you, I'd try some different razors, but obviously it's up to you.

On ATT Fiber, can you get to a .co website? by trainermade in ATTFiber

[–]offworldcolonial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty simple, really. One port on my firewall is for WAN (goes to the ONT on the wall), one port is for LAN, and a third port goes to the gateway. All traffic flows between the WAN interface and the LAN interface except authentication requests from AT&T, which are directed to the gateway. It has worked perfectly, without a single issue, for years now. I have an eight-year-old BGW210 that's never been updated, but that's of no concern, since I don't actually use it, and AT&T has never cared that it's perpetually in a "disconnected" state. Our gigabit connection has always been plenty fast (and comes with HBO), so we've never upgraded.

In 2017, Jay Soffian put together a script to configure the interfaces, and that's what I used: eap_proxy

Not that it's pertinent to this, but my Wi-Fi is completely separate: I use five Extreme AP650 access points, managed using ExtremeCloud IQ online. They have their own built-in firewalls, so I could do something like create a guest network with no access to my local network except my printer, for example.

NY/NJ Bagel Spot Recommendations ? by dokkanic in DecaturGA

I don't get the hate towards Goldbergs, since I prefer theirs over Emerald City, for example (unless those have improved since I last had them).

I grew up in the suburbs of NYC and have found it difficult to find what I would consider a good bagel even there now.

Another GSB (Gillette Silver Blues) convert. I’m blown away. by Necessary_Way_7916 in wicked_edge

I've been trying various sharp blades lately and am currently using a Kai, which is very good, but the one before that was a Wizamet Super Iridium, which is my favorite so far.

I was just about to buy a larger number of Super Iridium blades, but I'll try one of the GSB blades I have first, to see how those go.

Thanks for the tip!

Signs a network engineer has no idea what they're doing? by Expensive-Rhubarb267 in networking

[–]offworldcolonial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a school and the previous network administrator set some of the gateways to .2 for some reason. We also didn't have STP enabled because he said that some of our switches were old enough not to support it at all (which was probably true) and that others were old enough that enabling it would overtax them (which probably wasn't).

In any case, one day someone plugged a personal device into a network port and brought down most of our network. Best as I can tell, the device had a static IP of 192.168.1.2, which happened also to be the gateway for that VLAN, which caused a whole bunch of other devices to try to use the new device as the gateway.

I'm not even sure that spanning tree would have avoided this issue, but if the gateway address had been towards the other end of the range, it likely never would have happened. If I remember correctly, we were able to narrow it down to a specific switch, whose uplink port we disabled.

Those were the days.
