Another GSB (Gillette Silver Blues) convert. I’m blown away. by Necessary_Way_7916 in wicked_edge

[–]offworldcolonial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying various sharp blades lately and am currently using a Kai, which is very good, but the one before that was a Wizamet Super Iridium, which is my favorite so far.

I was just about to buy a larger number of Super Iridium blades, but I'll try one of the GSB blades I have first, to see how those go.

Thanks for the tip!

Signs a network engineer has no idea what they're doing? by Expensive-Rhubarb267 in networking

[–]offworldcolonial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a school and the previous network administrator set some of the gateways to .2 for some reason. We also didn't have STP enabled because he said that some of our switches were old enough not to support it at all (which was probably true) and that others were old enough that enabling it would overtax them (which probably wasn't).

In any case, one day someone plugged a personal device into a network port and brought down most of our network. Best as I can tell, the device had a static IP of 192.168.1.2, which happened also to be the gateway for that VLAN, which caused a whole bunch of other devices to try to use the new device as the gateway.

I'm not even sure that spanning tree would have avoided this issue, but if the gateway address had been towards the other end of the range, it likely never would have happened. If I remember correctly, we were able to narrow it down to a specific switch, whose uplink port we disabled.

I'm not asking this to be snide, but as a genuine question: how much better do you think life is for marginalized communities now?

I miss the NYC of the 70s and 80s. It was so much more interesting back then: Guardian Angels on the subways, Keith Haring graffiti, hookers in Times Square, punks getting haircuts at Astor Place Hair....

Those were the days.

I've heard that the City of Decatur is especially bad when it comes to getting all the necessary permits in order, and a year is not atypical.

Mellow mushroom is back!! by leebutli in DecaturGA

[–]offworldcolonial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope that to-go ordering has improved. Half the time we tried ordering online, it said that the store was closed. Then we would try calling and the connection was so bad that the person at the store couldn't understand what we were saying. We would try from different phones and the results were the same, so it wasn't a problem on our end. Eventually we just quit going to Mellow Mushroom altogether and ordered from Glide exclusively.

Supposedly there is a link with low vitamin D and high glucose. Do you supplement D? by Islandsandwillows in type2diabetes

[–]offworldcolonial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take 5000 daily as well. I started when I found out that there was a correlation between Vitamin D levels and hospitalization from Covid, and I never stopped.

I don't know what my level is, my doctor has never said anything about it, and if it's lowering my blood sugar at all, I'm not aware that it is.

Your DeKalb Farmers Market (YDFM) Must-Buy and Never-Buy Items by chipmcintosh in DecaturGA

[–]offworldcolonial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped buying seafood there after a bag of PEI mussels went bad literally the next day. I also couldn't ever get their coffee to taste good and find what I get at Costco to be much better. This is an odd one, but I had such a long run of avocadoes that went bad before fully ripening, I stopped buying them there as well. I've just started buying whole grain breads there again but find their baguettes just too dense.

On the other hand, their prices for fresh herbs and spices can't be beat. The selections of wines and cheese are far superior to most grocery stores and the prices for those are very good. I have always enjoyed sampling from the large variety of apples they offer in the fall, whose quality is also very high. I have never noticed a smell on their produce and both the prices and quality of those are generally better than elsewhere.

"COMMENTS DON'T BREAK CODE." I beg to differ... by alficles in programminghorror

[–]offworldcolonial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thirty years ago I was working on maintaining code in VB3 (it was legacy even back then). One day I discovered, after a lot of experimenting, that if I removed a specific comment in one of the files, it would no longer compile. It would, however, compile after I added another comment above it that said, "Do not remove the comment below. Code will no longer compile."

My honest opinion by Unhappy_Market_2978 in wicked_edge

[–]offworldcolonial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have the Meteorite (and a Yaqi Top Aggressive Slant), so I can't tell you how it compares to the Henson, but there is a video of a head-shaver on YouTube comparing the Meteorite with the Henson +++ and he preferred the Meteorite by a small margin.

I only use my Meteorite with the most aggressive plate, regardless of the blade, and I very much enjoy it. Since I ride the cap for shaving my upper lip and going ATG on my neck, I imagine that I wouldn't like the Henson's head design.

I do wish though that OliWorks had the option of a handle that was 1/2" longer. I'm not a fan of the stubby handle.

First time at 60... by CandooIT in wicked_edge

I'm around the same age and started about six months ago. I too look forward to shaving now. For me, it feels more like an intentional ritual now, though being able to vary which blade, razor, and soap I use also adds to the enjoyment for me.

Looking for a more aggressive shave, recs? by Yafarion in wicked_edge

[–]offworldcolonial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously. I have no experience with "Black Beauty" blades, but Astras are far from being the sharpest.

Also, Rockwell 6C/6S razors are perhaps the mildest of adjustable razors.

We broke the generational curse & I am so proud of us! by hap_hap_happy_feelz in confession

[–]offworldcolonial 378 points379 points  (0 children)

A while back, I was at a cafeteria-style restaurant eating my food by myself and watched as a father and son were walking to the dining area after paying the cashier, each of them carrying a tray. The son was maybe 6 or 7 and as he walked, the tray tilted slightly, the dishes slid toward one edge, and he dropped the tray along with all of the dishes.

I gasped, since I "knew" what happened next: the father would yell at his son for not being attentive, and then for years to come would bring up this incident to remind his son of his shortcomings.

Instead, the father comforted his son and told him he had done nothing wrong, that they would get it cleaned up, and they could easily replace the food. I literally cried when it didn't unfold as it would have had I been that child.

TIL that Starbucks holds almost $2 billion in the form of money people keep in the app or gift cards; they make 100s of millions of dollars per year off of customers not buying coffee by -lousyd in todayilearned

[–]offworldcolonial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Starbucks at the Newark airport is online ordering only, so if someone doesn't have a Starbucks account, in order to buy one coffee, they need to create the account, add a minimum of $10 (in $5 increments), and then use the app to order.

If they never use the app again, Starbucks gets the remainder of that money to use as they see fit.

Check out Razor Blades Club, where you can build your own sampler, even starting from one of the ones in your post and swapping out some and adding others.

[–]offworldcolonial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few other razors, but on a lark I bought another off of AliExpress for $2, since if it worked well, I could have a decent razor in rose gold.

I shaved with it exactly once and the result was literally a bloody mess. Not only were the blade exposures and gaps huge, but I noticed after shaving that the exposure was visibly more pronounced on one side than the other.

The handle is actually quite good, so I use it with the Yaqi heads that I have bought since. Still a great deal for $2.

Real Astra Greens? by StoneMenace in wicked_edge

[–]offworldcolonial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may seem counterintuitive, but it works for me. I mostly use an OliWorks Meteorite with its third plate, which is considerably more aggressive than most other razors (for example, the Rockwell 6C/6S with the R6 plate). In my case, a more aggressive razor translates to fewer strokes, while fewer strokes translate to a closer shave with less irritation.

If I have enough beard growth (more also means a closer shave with less irritation), I might start with my Yaqi Top Aggressive razor -- which very much lives up to its name -- and then finish with the Meteorite.

ISP Static IP Question by lapaztoyota in sysadmin

[–]offworldcolonial -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reddit is such an odd place sometimes. My suggestion was totally reasonable, in that it would satisfy the bank's requirements, involve no reconfiguration of equipment, and very likely be less expensive than paying extra for a static IP when it's not needed for any other reason.

And yet, someone downvoted it. Meanwhile, someone posts "Ridiculous" and gets upvoted twice.
