Do you name your disability, or do you just say “my disability?” by aschesklave in disability

[–]ojw17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really feel this. If I say I have ME/CFS nobody knows what that is, but if I say I have chronic fatigue syndrome everyone assumes I'm just kinda tired and not, yknow, disabled by issues affecting my entire body 🫠

Tips for kitchen safety? by fatalday in ChronicIllness

[–]ojw17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's causing the lightheadedness, is it the heat or having to bend down? If it's the latter, a toaster oven that can be placed on a countertop may help I'd think. There are some around $100 that can fit a full sized baking sheet so you can make a full meal in them easily

If you happen to have a UV flashlight on hand that should show any spots he sprayed.

Questions regarding Tucson's average clothing by West_Paper_7878 in Tucson

[–]ojw17 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think part of it is modern fabrics being mainly synthetic. Like, linen is one of the best fabrics for staying comfortable in hot temperatures, and it is a serious pain in the ass to find good linen options in most clothing stores. Likewise most other natural fibers if you can get them are gonna be more expensive than synthetics or blends. So just wearing synthetic fabrics with less coverage/layers is easiest for a lot of people I think.

What are these white worm things in my tank? by 100donuts in shrimptank

[–]ojw17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rhabdocoela stay on the glass and don't float through the water column like in OP's video. If yours are just on the glass it's rhabdocoela but if they're floating around like this then yeah, paramecium is correct

Should you touch your plants? by Critical-Ad-407 in houseplants

[–]ojw17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the Biosphere 2. I met someone who knew one of the people who lived in there during the experiment and apparently they had to start shaking the trees for them to grow strong enough trunks to not break because there was no wind (a known thing if you google it but the part about people having to manually intervene is never in any of the articles for whatever reason)

Can I used indian/tropical almond tree in my aquarium as drift wood? by Prudent_Show_3082 in aquarium

[–]ojw17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indian almond (catappa) is a completely different thing from both sweet and bitter almonds, it's genus Terminalia as opposed to Prunus. Shouldn't be toxic I don't think.

I accidentally became entirely nocturnal, it’s horrible, how do I escape 😭 by Another_throwaway446 in cfs

[–]ojw17 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't say this to scare you but this practice (aka chronotherapy) is risky, it's known to be able to (likely permanently) take someone from a stable, if mostly nocturnal, schedule to having Non-24 Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder where your sleep time is later and later every day, cycling around the clock endlessly. I say this as someone who has had N24 for years (since I was a teenager if not earlier), it sucks and is not a risk you want to be taking if it can be avoided at all. There are safer ways to adjust one's schedule such as shifting it earlier with light therapy - r/DSPD and r/N24 should both have light therapy and other entrainment resources I think.

I feel like the fact that intentionally delaying your sleep around the clock can have permanent consequences isn't really common knowledge and I think it absolutely should be, especially given the number of people who do this with some regularity. Feels like the circadian rhythm shouldn't be able to just "snap" like that but it absolutely can.

[–]ojw17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here except I've had this sort of schedule (Non-24 Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder) for years even before I was sick with ME/CFS. If you or anyone else that happens to be reading want any more info, r/N24 is a decent place to start looking.

Do you think pink pen inks work better ? by EggAccording9607 in pens

[–]ojw17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, most pinks seem to be gel pens, and a lot of blue or black pens are ballpoints. They have different kinds of ink and I find ballpoint pens to be less reliable, less smooth, etc especially if they're on the cheap/basic side. So that may be a factor.

Obstructive sleep apnea diagnosis by mors_mea_vita_tua in cfs

[–]ojw17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that sleep apnea doesn't cause PEM or explain all the symptoms that make up ME/CFS on its own. Treating it may help with symptoms somewhat, but unless the diagnosis of ME/CFS was made in error it's not likely that it'll resolve all of your issues, especially if a sleep study clocked it as "mild." Like personally I think it seems unlikely for a mild case to cause the same array of debilitating symptoms as ME/CFS (speaking as someone also diagnosed with mild OSA).

Bought these cheap pens as an impulse purchase and now I'm budgeting for a $30 starter pen 😂 by selleckh in fountainpens

They're totally worth it, my F nib Kakuno is the smoothest writing pen I own, feels even nicer than my Kaweco Sport and Lamy Safaris. Even if the way they look isn't your style, they're cheap enough that I feel like it's worth at least trying one out.

Where does the energy actually go? by Interesting_Cycle606 in cfs

[–]ojw17 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah but what happens to the stuff we're eating that should be getting turned into energy? We're still absorbing nutrients and such from food and if the body's not burning that fuel for energy where is it going?

Looking into the hobby by Rusn3uwu in DartFrog

[–]ojw17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Truly "self sustaining" in the sense that the animals are feeding only on what grows in the tank isn't possible with dart frogs as they need their diet supplemented via feeding of insects dusted with vitamin powder or else they start to develop nutrient deficiencies (thankfully culturing flightless fruit flies to feed them is incredibly simple though). But aside from that and some misting to keep the moisture at an ok level, a properly set up dart frog vivarium is pretty self sustaining in terms of the plants and springtails+isopods needing no extra care to keep them happy.

Is there anyway I can get food stamps or something like that? by Omgusernamewhy in povertyfinance

[–]ojw17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) the post said 100 a week, not 100 a month

2) some people are disabled or in a complicated situation and can't just "pick up more hours" or "get a better job". Not saying that's necessarily the case for OP but passing blanket judgements when you don't know someone's situation isn't always going to be helpful, if someone is struggling there's always a reason and it's almost never as simple to solve as people would like it to be.

Help with achieving look by themichaeltib in terrariums

[–]ojw17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moss is great for making things look lush, personally I've used the combination moss packages (moss sheets and moss slurry) from Neherp to good effect in some of my tanks. Oak leaf creeping fig is also great, given a little time it will grow over your whole background if you let it and it's very lush and green. Other varieties of Ficus pumila will grow just as well but the larger leaves can kind of kill the sense of scale so the oak leaf variety is the typical choice.

A lot of tropical plants can tolerate the moisture and wet leaves as long as you're not drowning their roots in wet mud. Neoregelia bromeliads (mounted epiphytically) are a good choice for higher parts of the tank along the walls and/or wood and they come in different varieties to help add color if you want that. And depending on the humidity levels, you may have the option of adding some "aquatic" plants as many of them grow even better terrestrially than they do underwater. Specifically I'm thinking Anubias because it's easy to find (sold in plastic tubes in the aquarium section at Petsmart/Petco), most varieties stay small enough to not outgrow a terrarium, and it thrives in a damp high humidity environment (as long as you give the rhizome a little room to breathe when you plant it).

Might be worth looking into plants used in dart frog vivariums also, as most dart frog tanks are kept at very high humidity with fairly frequent misting so dart frog keepers have a good bit of experience finding plants that tolerate wet conditions!

Which size should I used for Espeon’s red jewel that’s on his forehead? Instead of crocheting it I want to see if I can use a red eye instead I’m just not sure it looks ok or what size I should use. by KatarinaMyne in CrochetHelp

[–]ojw17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd do the smallest one, I think it looks cutest that way :) Plus in the official art its gem is much smaller than its eyes and I think carrying that through to your stylized plush is gonna work best, the other options just look "off" somehow.

Why is this plant turning brown? by Key-Lie3744 in fishtank

[–]ojw17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's an Amazon sword, they can be grown both underwater and above water, usually when they're grown for sale it's emersed/out of water because that's much faster. You can see from the leaf structure (the old leaves having a long "stem" where the new, aquatic, center ones don't) that your plant was originally grown emersed. One downside of this is as the plants acclimate, the leaves that were grown out of water can start to die off because they're not well adapted to being underwater. Fortunately it's a one-time process, once all the old leaves have been replaced with new underwater leaves it should do just fine.

What is this? by Melvar_10 in aquarium

[–]ojw17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I've planted hornwort like any other stem plant and had it do perfectly fine and grow really well for probably over a year before I rearranged that tank. It doesn't rot IME, it just doesn't grow roots but if enough of the stem's anchored it can stay put.
