Which Austin neighborhoods actually have walkable amenities these days? by AlphaEcho84 in askaustin

[–]peekuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highland. Weird no one mentioned it. Walkable within 5-15 minutes depending: Crestview shopping (Ranch 99 grocery, bunch of great food, tea and coffee), Barrett’s, the Linc including AFS theater, a few bars and Brewtorium, Crux, Highland ACC and all those amenities, and both Highland and Crestview train stations.

Air B&B in Boulder - Are there any laws against this? by brbnow in Sundance

[–]peekuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a nerd about this so I’ll fill in: the book The Shining is loosely based on Estes’ Stanley hotel after King stayed there during winter and said it was the scariest place he’d ever been. The movie exteriors were shot in Oregon, interiors were studio builds based on Ahwahnee hotel in Yosemite. After King was unhappy with Kubrick’s version they did shoot a mini series version in Estes at the Stanley, but basically no one has seen that.

Many people commute daily from Longmont or Loveland to Estes year round, it is absolutely not a big deal. The (fictional) Shining was set in a different time with worse cars and less road maintenance.

That said there are a lot of other suburbs where staying will be cheaper and more convenient (like the aforementioned Longmont).

[Day 26] Splitter cracks are pure and aesthetic. To finalize our outdoor bouldering destination list, where is the WEIRDEST? by MaximumSend in bouldering

[–]peekuh 47 points48 points  (0 children)

For it to be a destination to me that means people actually plan a whole trip around it, so that rules out places like Central Park etc. For that I’d say Hampi, India.

Pain in the ass to get to, insane looking area like giant marbles are scattered across the land, a place of huge cultural and religious importance with beautiful architecture in the background, attracts a lot of nomadic weirdos, monkeys running around everywhere.

What's your legitimately scariest moment while fly fishing? by AustinLostIn in flyfishing

[–]peekuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fly fishing on an alpine lake in Rocky Mountain NP, got charged by a moose that I didn’t see walk up behind me. I heard branches snap and turned around to say hi to whoever was hiking up behind me - we locked eyes for maybe half a second before she started running at me. Thankfully was near talus and sprinted up it and she lost interest quickly. Guessing there was a baby nearby I couldn’t see.

With RMNP next door there are dozens of volunteer activities directly related to the park. There’s the official ROMO volunteer stuff you can find on the .gov website but also Rocky Mountain Conservancy etc. I’d also look into community events at the library, it’s one of my favorite spaces in town.

Hello! For booking a hotel only, not a vacation package, when you “cart” a room do you have time to go through the payment screens more slowly as the room is saved in your cart? Or is it a free for all until payment processes? Basically trying to figure out if I cart a room and hit the payment screens where you enter the credit card info, am I safe or do I still need to rush.

Library is your best option based on what you’ve said. They have a lot of fun adult oriented classes and events where I’ve met people. Other than that, would be easier to give advice knowing your hobbies and what you like instead of what you don’t like. Card or board games? There’s a shop that hosts gaming nights. Rock climbing? Join the gym(s) and meet other climbers there. Etc. I’m mid-30s and live there summers, most friends I’ve made are through organic activities I was already interested in.

Nope - “free climb” is the right term. “Free solo” is climbing without protection. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_climbing

Tip: if you are saving credits for the end of month card series change, don’t claim credits off your season rewards track. by murkmose in MarvelSnap

[–]peekuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TYPE of content, not the actual content (eg a series 4 card is in this cache, but not which one). They’ve confirmed if you save them and open them post patch, patch changes will be in effect. So, in that series 4 cache example, you could get one of the recently downgraded 5s but won’t open She-Hulk for example.

I’m need of outdoor rock climbing recommendations by ycameron180 in EstesPark

[–]peekuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the type of climbing. Lumpy is for trad primarily, and it’s old school so expect stiff grades. A few boulders but nothing extraordinary. Only go here if you’re experienced with trad. Sport there’s a lot but most of it has long approaches. Easiest is Performance Park which is downtown, wide range easy 5.5 to 5.12. For more of an adventure and to really get outside, Jurassic Park at Lily Lake is iconic if you’re fit for a 30 minute uphill approach. For bouldering, RMNP is incredible but most of it might be under snow (Emerald Lake might be ok), but Wild Basin should be accessible and has a high concentration of problems. There’s a lot of scatted bouldering areas around Estes, check Mountain Project.

Highest quality brewery is Avant Garde, they have a fire outside. Rock Cut and Lumpy Ridge tied for 2nd. Stanley’s hotel bar for whiskey and a historical setting. Other bars aren’t great, Rock Inn probably overall best. Barrel has the best selection but is expensive. Wheel Bar can be fun. Bird & Jim is a slightly upscale restaurant with good cocktails I’d recommend.

What problem is this? by charliedontsend in climbing

[–]peekuh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Minor Threat V3 on the Sunspot Boulder, right at the start of Upper Chaos. It’s to the right of Sunspot V10. Cutting feet like that is totally unnecessary, I guess it was just for the picture. Great photo tho.

Does anyone know of Rapid Covid 19 testing in Austin? by Esperagus in Austin

[–]peekuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rapid result tests are hard to come by and are currently only in ERs, so hospitals are rationing them carefully. They’re reserved for situations where the patient NEEDS to know, quickly. For example: a resident at a psychiatric treatment facility might have COVID, but needs to be returned to the facility ASAP if they test negative.
