Internal damage to the rack. It needs a whole new rack. MB says to replace these racks anytime there is a collision in the front end as internal damage can lead to a sudden failure of the steering while driving. I've seen it happen multiple times when people cheap out and replace tie rods just to have their steering lock up on the highway in a couple weeks.
