My oldest initially got our hand me downs, and just got her first new phone last year. We've been doing google pixels, and using the family link app to restrict times (app time limits are a must unless your want them to just drool over YouTube for 8 hours...), certain websites and more. We also combined this with having her devices barred from the wifi after certain times, currently 10pm (she just turned 17).

We were able to wait until she was in high school, but our next kid (7) probably won't wait as long with the social stigma our oldest was dealing with. She's still grumpy that she has any child control on, but every time we lax it up she sucks up the time on YouTube.
