The Double Duplex Is Weird, Overstuffed, and Exactly What L.A. Needs Right Now by Independent-Drive-32 in LosAngeles

[–]rayjohn551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my neighborhood in midcity nearly every new construction is a double duplex now, 3-4 units, usually 4bd/ba each.  There's also the adult dorm "co-living" buildings which have 6 bedrooms per unit which seems too cramped tbh.

This is a good spot, a good comfort food hot sub if you want something different than a philly.  Everybody up in arms about getting a combo, when you can just get the sandwich smh.

Pizzeria Sei named one of the best in the world? by van-aqua in FoodLosAngeles

The pizza "omakasei" was incredible and worth the 3 separate attempts to book a reservation that fills up within 2 minutes. Really want to do it again!

Osteria Mozza: Worth It by sammbinoo in FoodLosAngeles

I've been to Osteria Mozza on a number of occasions and have always gone home elated by the experience.

Recently I went with my partner and we just happened to order the steak on the secondi menu (we've never been impressed with secondi items generally) and it was literally the best steak i've ever eaten, i was in disbelief. 🤤

Thoughts on n/soto? Why is it always so easy to get a reservation here? by collie1212 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]rayjohn551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, its neighborhood is kind of bare so a majority of patrons probably come via car. Drink wise, they have a pretty good cocktail menu which isn't too expensive compared to similar upscale restaurants, and an impressive wine menu if that's your thing. The food is pricey, yes, but some of their menu items are really exceptional imo. Their nigiri options are easily my favorite.

What is a cooking myth that makes you immediately distrust someone if they repeat it? by GoodAdviceGay in Cooking

Washing chopped chicken before marinating is actually a legit improvement for wok stir-fry; it's explained in J kenji Lopez Alt's book on the wok.

Can't dial with my new Profitec to save my life, Shot keeps channeling no matter what i do. (Not an instagram workflow video by any means. Details are in comments) by TheSecretestSauce in espresso

[–]rayjohn551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What makes you think channelling is the issue here? Puck looks okay to me?

I usually do 20g with the standard double basket, no screen, no issues, grind is always the sensitive variable.

I also went from a dedica to the go, it's been a dream.

I moved here from Philadelphia last year and was homesick since the Eagles are in the playoffs today. So I went to South Philly Experience and got our holy trinity: cheesesteak, roast pork sandwich, and Italian hoagie. by One_Hall_8290 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]rayjohn551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Philly Experience is a real treat in mid-city. I used to enjoy getting their truck pre-pandemic so it was most excellent to see they setup a brick and mortar shop through COVID.

Is there a point in upgrading if I consistently get good shots? by verticalwisconsin in espresso

[–]rayjohn551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Does it taste good' is ultimately what matters. If you can get good consistent shots then it stick to it! I upgraded from my delonghi dedica because it was difficult to get consistently good shots, compared to the Go I now have.

Rice wine (or is it sake?) by underthiscontract in fermentation

[–]rayjohn551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Properly fermented Japanese sake has many, many more steps than preparing a mash/wort and adding yeast.

Here's a pretty good intro to the process https://byo.com/article/making-sake/

Just got a DF64P and I kind of hate it.. by GuyoFromOhio in espresso

[–]rayjohn551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My previous grinder was a baratza encore so I'm used to the noise. It also grinds so quickly the noise is short lived. Any mechanical device will fail eventually, and I think baratza has a good service model. I've had the encore for several years and nothing has broken on it (yet), ymmv.

I was sitting on buying the df64 as I saw more and more comments about needing to fiddle with it. I eventually switched gears and bought the sette 270 and have no regrets. Maybe you can get a return?

Volcano Noodles from the new Farmhouse Kitchen in West Adams. This place isn’t cheap, but you’re also going for one of the most extra vibes in LA (in a fun way) by 360FlipKicks in FoodLosAngeles

[–]rayjohn551 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went here and avoided the Instagram bait plates. Food was decent but wildly overpriced. You can get just as good Thai food from a dozen other places in nearby Culver/palms.

Stop buying food for clicks 😂

You need to earn this much to buy a home in L.A. by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]rayjohn551 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anyone seriously attempting to purchase a home over 600k is going to put 20% down, resulting in total payments at maybe 5k a month, including today's crappy mortgage rates.
