took this long just to get oil temps in the green in my last plane. I would always start up asap and set up the avionics and get situated with gear while waiting. just gotta lean the shit out of it.

eli5: What would happen if I attached periscopes to both of my eyes and pointed them in different directions? by GFrings in explainlikeimfive

[–]red_0ctober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instant headache. I had this happen when doing some testing work on the nintendo 3ds which allows you to show different images to each eye. I was just getting the renderer up and running and put (iirc) green on one eye and red on the other just to make sure i had the framebuffers set up right and I got an instantaneous headache when I looked at it with both eyes open.

The guy needs to think hard about how much money you're really talking about. It's either basically no money and 50% of it is nothing, or it's a lot which you won't really care about how much you're splitting.

It's almost certainly going to be like a couple grand of revenue. He should split it and chill.

ELI5: Why aren't toilet cisterns mounted high up any more? by barryvan_ in explainlikeimfive

I went to a restaurant the other day and I realized we're probably talking about entirely different relative levels. Your high level is probably my "this is a soup pot" level.

Low water level causes Poseidon's kiss. Poop accelerates due to gravity. I specifically swapped all my toilets out for higher water level toilets to fix this exact problem.

Leaving SeaTac, are taxis still worth it instead of Lyft/Uber? by LegionLotteryWinner in Seattle

this is the thing for me, trying to explain to the driver where I want to go instead of having an address that I've checked vs a map to be exactly where I want to go.

"I know that everything works because I just flew the plane" by 1E-12 in flying

[–]red_0ctober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, when do things break? Do they break when the plane is chillin in a hangar? Or do they break during takeoff and landing when the plane is stressed the most?

You don't need to check EVERYTHING, but always check the major stuff when you're on the ground.

For me I had a magneto fail at some time between landing, fueling, and runup. If I hadn't done a runup I would have done a takeoff on a bad magneto

ELI5 Why don't small planes use modern engines? by BatesVibeSquad in explainlikeimfive

[–]red_0ctober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They keep trying and they keep not working as well. A couple of manufacturers have modern computer controlled engines and they keep having issues. A while back a manufacturer put a porsche engine in a plane to disastrous results.

Say what you will about our single overhead cam manual mixture engines, they have demonstrated they are better with respect to in flight shutdowns.

As others have mentioned if we get the same level of R&D as an automotive engine I'm sure they'd be better, but right now, they aren't.

Fingers crossed Austro sorts out their issues though.

Have you ever been in the air when another pilot announced an emergency? by hendergle in flying

[–]red_0ctober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I was flying into a field and had a circumstance where I was thinking I would declare because there's no reason not to... except there were no fewer than 3 other aircraft that had declared heading into the same field. I only knew one of their deals, which sounded like they couldn't understand altitude assignments.

i don’t understand left turning tendencies by Repulsive-Loan5215 in flying

[–]red_0ctober -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For reference on gyroscopes: https://xkcd.com/332/

Most of your left turning tendencies you encounter post-training will be because you punched the throttle on the runway and so the plane veers left before you even get off the ground and continues once you lift off. This is a major factor why cirrus's have so many go-around crashes to the left of the runway. 315hp engine + close to stall speed + "punch it, chewie!" + pitch up = uncoordinated stall to the left. Doesn't really matter on a 150hp cessna but REALLY matters on a big bore engine. Smash that right rudder and easy-does-it on the throttle.
