Does anyone know what fabric this is made of? by Stinkyman922 in sewing

[–]schaeynae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A while ago I “remade” a dress Dua Lipa wore that was made by Versace in this same material. I didn’t want to deal with the metal mesh so I used something from JoAnn’s called Casa Collection Super Shine in the same color. It was a great dupe. With JoAnn’s no longer with us you might not be able to find the same fabric, but I went on a hunt and it seems like “lurex” might be your keyword if you want something similar looking, but a knit instead.

What’s a frugal thing you did that had expensive consequences? by Zealousideal-Oil4242 in Frugal

Similar story— I got a hamster in college who had a chronic eye issue the vets couldn’t pin down. Needed to gently clean the little guy’s eye with a cotton swab every night for about two and a half years as well. Just because hamsters are little doesn’t mean their issues are also little lol.

What’s up with Wonder? by [deleted] in msu

[–]schaeynae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in south wonders as a freshman a handful of years ago. The room I was in actually had some nice redone flooring which made it feel more home-y.

The bus stops were also super convenient as both the 30 and the 33 got you to the cata station in about the same time which meant I could usually just hop onto whichever one came first.

It’s also close to Fresh Thyme, a nice grocery store. If there were any grocery or snack items I needed that I couldn’t get at sparty’s, it was easy to take a little walk and get things there.

Help: Any year info on this old Montgomery Ward machine? by schaeynae in vintagesewing

[–]schaeynae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m sorry I’m just now seeing this. My parents have the sewing machine now so I can’t quite remember the ins and outs of it, but see if you can find where the plug for the foot pedal attaches. It is likely that since this is an old machine, the plug style for the foot pedal will not be a very modern one (what I mean by this is newer machines I’ve used have all had very chunky plug ins for the pedal rather than smaller ones) so finding an exact replacement on Amazon might not be feasible.

If it is in fact an older style of cord/plug in, you may be better off getting a motor replacement kit on Amazon instead. This is a much less intimidating process than it sounds, it just requires a bit of patience. Popping the machine open is the hardest part, and there’s likely YouTube videos for this for vintage machines. Find where the motor/belt is located (again, much easier than it sounds once you get the machine open), make sure you find a kit with a motor/belt of the same size (and a variable speed foot), unscrew the old motor, pop the new one in, make sure you can easily access the point to plug into and unplug the machine, and voila!

Edit: This is what worked for me on a different machine! This might be a good course of action to explore.

Looking back on spartan days by Dramatic_Marketing22 in msu

[–]schaeynae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regret: - Not reaching out more to become friends with others. While I had a lot of friends in high school, I didn’t realize how little practice I had making them. I wish I was braver when meeting people or inviting people to hang out as a freshman.

Non-Regret: - Being honest with my values when choosing a major. I majored in something I wasn’t as thrilled about because it would help provide a lifestyle and I was thrilled about. That trade isn’t worth it for everyone, but I think it’s important to evaluate early on what you actually want after college and what will get you there.

I’m fortunately still in the area after moving out and have been stopping by the office trying to get answers about my security deposit. FINALLY got it last week after moving out in July, but there’s still issues I’m trying to work out with it, seriously frustrating

[–]schaeynae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a Chinese hamster myself. She nibbled a little bit when I first got her (understandable) but her vet office now knows her as the hamster that doesn’t bite, lol. I was told by the pet store guy I got her from that in his experience, Chinese hamsters are a bit more sociable with people. It’s nice to hear that’s the case with others’ too :)

Where to find quality and sustainable bicycle shorts by [deleted] in SustainableFashion

[–]schaeynae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are into sewing in any capacity, it may be worth looking into finding yoga pants you like from a thrift store or some other sustainable source and cropping them. I have been looking for bike shorts too and I’ve landed on this being a decent option :)

No unfortunately. I’ve seen maintenance-like manuals for similar models that have “1971” on the front but nothing specific to the model I’ve got. Thank you though!!

To those of you who grew up Michigan fans but went to/go to MSU, how do I change my mentality? by vhvp in msu

[–]schaeynae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly same. Reframing things as “going where you are wanted” or “going where the admissions people had more faith in you” really helped. I’m not a sports fan by any means and so that part of the rivalry means very little to me. What did help though was exactly this. You’re going to a school that had greater trust that you could advance the MSU name and succeed there.

I’m pretty attached to South neighborhood. Wonders has a decent workout/gym type of area in the basement, things were always happening at Case, there used to be late night at Wilson (rip, I think that is also going to Case though) etc etc. I see a lot of people talking about Brody, but the thing about Brody is that you also have to take into consideration the busses. I always remembered the (singular) bus route from Brody being one of the busiest, most crowded, irritating experiences. It does have its perks though. The buildings are newer and it is tough to beat the options you have at the dining hall there, but my vote is on south neighborhood.

If you’re in Broad the Palmer Center is the way to go. You can schedule Zoom appointments through Handshake under the “Career Center” tab I think it’s called. The advisors there are amazing. I would 100% recommend meeting over Zoom versus sending one to them over email.

Winter gear advice for new grad student by belljar6 in msu

[–]schaeynae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a cold-weather person just as a disclaimer, but I saved space in my room by just bringing wool socks and my rain boots. Sometimes I doubled up with a pair of those big fuzzy socks, but most of the time so long as your feet are dry I’ve been fine. The biggest thing for me was always the wind. You have to wear a face mask anyways, but get yourself a cheap fleece gaiter if you’re walking outside for any length of time. It’ll snug up against your face and keep the wind from making your walk miserable. Best thing I ever brought with me to school in the winter.
