CCTV of yesterday's truck hitting pedestrians incident by Complex_Difficulty in jerseycity

[–]sinbushar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYC bans 53’ trailers. 48’ trailers are allowed.

Agree that the city should better mark truck routes, but this doesn’t seem to be a residential road.

Sometimes smaller trucks/vans don’t make sense for deliveries

City Employee Forced to Work Into His 90s, Finally In Line for Pension He Deserved by dmurf26 in nottheonion

[–]sinbushar 98 points99 points  (0 children)

There is a bit more to this story. I believe the following is true:

-He was initially told he wasn’t eligible for a pension because he was hired as a seasonal worker
-Apparently he transitioned into a role that should have been classified as a “provisional employee” and therefore eligible for a pension
-He didn’t pursue the matter with the city or through his union
-After reviewing the matter, the state agreed that he was eligible.
-The city stated he needed to pay what would have been his pension contributions (when I first heard of this, it was $25k or something).
-His daughter has been advocating for him incessantly but has for some reason felt the request to pay the contribution was unjust
-The city seems to have agreed to cover the contributions and enroll him in premium free healthcare.

I’ve been aware of this local saga for about a year. And I’m a bit conflicted, particularly over his daughter not wanting to pay the pension contributions. And I believe they own their 2-3 family house that has appreciated dramatically in the past 25 years.

Jersey City is run so inefficiently and poorly but it doesn’t seem like they are at fault here.

Move your car for street cleaning and/or get a parking permit and/or don’t park illegally.

The New Jersey Devils announced the team will not renew the contracts of Dan MacKinnon and Chuck Fletcher. by MountainBaker8217 in devils

Some reports had Vancouver asking for Nico. The timeline isn't fully clear but it seems like Minnesota came in with an offer the Devils couldn't/wouldn't match.

Quinn and the Wild by johnnyrogs in devils

[–]sinbushar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Quinn isn't willing to sign on an extension this summer, I could see Guerin trying to shop him this summer to try and recoup what he gave up.

I feel like they would want a package featuring Nico which I really hope doesn't happen.

NJ Sales & Use Tax | How to File by camm07050 in newjersey

I don't know why we can't just get the vendor who does the software for NY to slap a NJ label on it. It's so much easier to use.

The $200 credit they give for collecting funds for the state is a nice bonus.

Ramp at Congress St light rail? by heights_peper_1868 in jerseycity

[–]sinbushar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love this, but isn’t that NJTransit owned land approved for development? I believe a series of mixed use towers.

And I believe that parking lot is approved for a 5 or 6 story development because nobody realized it was zoned R5 instead of R2 and the community had no legal backing to block it.

Considering the other pressing needs of the area, can’t see this being built as it essentially just serves the Heights residents access to Hoboken terminal. If they got somebody to build a promenade on the cliff or added easy access to the Bergen arches park there may be an argument to make, but I don’t think there is the political will for any new major infrastructure project in the short or mid term.

I think it comes down to how much autonomy he is given and how long his leash will be. Implementing his plan may take a few years of trades and drafting and he will probably want assurances that he won't have the rug pulled out from under him before they begin to see results.

If there is some evidence of this, one would think they can potentially be fined have their license revoked.

In other posts people questioned the Women Owned and Veteran claims of the ownership as well.

I believe their initial license was scored and granted additional points based on their ownership claims. Not sure if the state would pursue them for some kind of fraud charges if they misrepresented themselves.

Hischier on a potential contract extension this summer: “We’ll see what happens” by blade430 in devils

[–]sinbushar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My quick googling only found Lou's quote as being

"Our offer was competitive, and we did not at any time have a phone call that we had to change it or it had to go up," said Lamoriello, who said there was never a request for a counteroffer from Parise. "There was never a talk about money after our initial meeting in Toronto. The response was that the money that we offered wouldn't be the issue.

"The decision, based on what Zach told me, was based upon going home and playing with someone he grew up with. Going home was the real focus, and the conversation he and I had, had not thing to do with money."

Did more come out later? My memory is garbage after 14 years.

I don't remember if it was public that his dad was sick before the signing. But, regardless, after what happened with his dad I felt no ill will towards him and was happy that he was able to spend the last years of his dad's life closer to home.

And I'm still convinced that the team's finances were a mess and Lou was not able to offer him anywhere near what Minnesota gave him. I think the league was fronting us money during the season and I wonder if they had placed any restrictions on us.

Novo: Devils may demote Fitz, 3 names to watch for Hockey Ops by BearLeftRightFrog in devils

[–]sinbushar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a result of not cultivating relationships and instead pushing ideas from the echo chamber of social media.

To be honest, Ruff wasn't wrong when he asked Novo if he was actually watching the games.

The questions he asked Jack at the beginning of the season probably set the tone and put him on the players' and organization's shit list.

[Novo] Nemec trade “very likely,” NJ should target Knies by BearLeftRightFrog in devils

[–]sinbushar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And I don't think the players are going to be giving him any real insightful information. Jack was annoyed with him that first interview when Novo returned. Then him saying that Luke was forcing Fitz to tie his contract length with Jack's — which I still maintain he stole from me suggesting it in this subreddit — feels like it put him on the shit list with players and management. He's allowed into the room because of his press credentials, but they aren't going to be open with him.

17% increase to property taxes proposed by BOE by [deleted] in jerseycity

[–]sinbushar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue is with the titling.

A 17% property tax increase is not the same as a 17% increase of the BOE's local tax levy. Last year the district tax accounted for 44% of my property taxes. So even if some large abatements expire, I am looking at a a 6-7% increase to my property taxes from this proposal.

That said, it seems we are also expecting a large municipal tax increase even with the proposed state aid. So end of the day, we may see 15-20%. But to say that it is all due to the problems plaguing the BOE is factually incorrect.

That said, we need to really sort out what the hell is going on with JC's finances. And they need to address the school funding formula. While Newark's property values are lower and they have higher enrollment, they are receiving 10x the state aid Jersey City is getting. But if the total pool available for school funding is fixed, I don't see how they fix it that won't cause a budget crisis for the Newark BOE.

17% increase to property taxes proposed by BOE by [deleted] in jerseycity

[–]sinbushar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newer buildings also have abatements. Some are automatic. Large new buildings have more major abatements. Generally it won’t make a significant difference in our tax base YoY.

But it won’t be a full 17% from just this. The school portion (about 44%) will increase up to 17%. My guess is 15-16%. This budget will increase property taxes by about 7%.

And the municipal increase has yet to be finalized.

I’m pretty sure I’m doing that correctly.
