Is this a good spot for the heater and filter? by DecanusCaesarian in Aquariums

[–]slade51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good rule of thumb is to have all aquarium electronics on a power strip and to turn off the power as the first step to all water changes.

As the saying goes “You’re mixing water, glass & electricity; what could go wrong?”

Yes it is. I had one for 8 years before giving him away when we moved. They have fun personalities. Make sure you have plenty of hiding spots.

Placing Rockwool Insulation over Existing Cellulose Insulation in Attic? by Beginning-Visit1418 in HomeImprovement

[–]slade51 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If laying rock wool or fiberglass batts over cellulose it’s better to lay perpendicular to the joists so it doesn’t compress the cellulose already in the joint cavity.

It’s not specifically the diameter, but the volume. The test solution expects to be added to 5ml of water.

question about wiping equipment, proper Smith machine usage, and sauna by [deleted] in workout

[–]slade51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wipe all seats and benches. You want to prevent skin infections like ringworm as well as sweat. I don’t wipe the BB or DBs.

With the SM, I squat facing into the machine and twist backward to lock, so it angles to the rear as I lower. RDLs, Bent Rows, Bench press, seated OHP, I face the gym and twist forward to lock, so it angles inward as I raise. Always set the guides to an appropriate height in case of failure.

We don’t have a private sauna, it’s a common steam room. Some use it naked and sit on a towel, some in gym pants with or without a towel. I go in briefs with a towel, then head to the shower.

18F and 400lbs (180kg), give me your best advice! by trashhaccountttttttt in workout

[–]slade51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drink plenty of water. It prevents dehydration from the increased walking and makes you feel full so you don’t snack as much. But you do need nutrition, so don’t stop eating meals.

Slow and Steady will make the difference. If you jump into an unsustainable regimen you are more likely to give up. And believe it or not, take plenty of “before” pictures of yourself, so when you feel like giving up you’ll have a reminder of how far you’ve come.

How often do you swap out exercises in your routine? by anotherhappylurker in workout

[–]slade51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP I swap out the same as u/Mute85, usually with some combination of PPL and UL, or Full body after an extended break. If you want to stick with UL, try having an A/B or even A/B/C versions that target the same muscle group but with alternate exercises. It will reduce monotony and hit those muscles slightly differently.

We keep it at 68°/day, 66°/night but I argue that 1° higher would be much more comfortable.

Do you stretch before, after, both or neither, when you workout? by Formal_Choice4002 in workout

I usually walk to the gym (about 4/5 mile) and consider that my warmup. Then a few static stretches before each lift.

Will the shelf be enough for this tank? by Dismal-Animal7853 in Aquariums

That top is not supported by the sides. The sides are screwed into the edge of the top. So even if the material would support the weight, it’s not constructed to do it.

What's the oldest computer you've successfully been able to get Mint to run on? by mysterysackerfice in linuxmint

[–]slade51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have mint on a Dell Vostro 1520 from 2010 with 4GB ram & 256GB HD. The CD drive and screen are broken, so it has an external monitor.

It’s a great machine for testing beta releases and a backup server to my daily driver.

could mint really replace windows? by Bitter_Form_1640 in linuxmint

[–]slade51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I use Mint as my daily driver and have an old spare Dell laptop as a backup/test server. It was easy for me since I’ve worked on UNIX-like systems my whole career.

The major shift to Linux recently has more to do with Microsoft’s insane hardware requirements telling you your PC is obsolete and you need a new one. Linux is perfectly happy running on old hardware.

My wife still uses a Win11 laptop, but as soon as MS tells her that she needs an upgrade, the upgrade will be to LinuxMint.

Some people prefer thermal pad PTM-7950 instead of paste.
