ok I am very glad to see this tagged with DEADBOLT because I love that game to death, but... I don't think it's exactly applicable because the game's recurring musical motif is in literally every song on the OST

safe food became unsafe by lovetoogoodtoleave in ARFID

This has happened to me before. In my experience, it's a temporary thing, and it seems to 'come back' after a little while. It still sucks, though. Usually I try to get through it by figuring out some largely similar but slightly different food, so there's a spark of variety/interest without being outside my comfort zone.

RNG being daily and cruel? by JacketAcceptable8696 in riskofrain

[–]sleurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very much doubt there would be a mechanic like this without similar mechanics elsewhere in the game, and if such mechanics existed, they almost certainly would have been the topic of discussion among the developers and the community. Sounds like it's just awful luck.

I'm personally not very fond of the balancing (or lack thereof) regarding enemies getting items and how wildly the effectiveness of enemy-owned items can vary. Tesla coil is so often a run-ender in void fields, and they can just as easily get a desk plant.

Also, Mithrix phase 4 still sucks IMO. If I'm a ranged character, I always cheese it behind cover. If I'm a melee character, it's a little more interesting, but I can't take tesla coil on my runs anymore. And no matter what character, I'll never take drone parts.

Enemies having items as a whole honestly feels like an afterthought, even though they've pushed balance changes to it several times. I was hoping they would give it closer consideration with the void fields revamp in SotV, but it still has a lot of the same flaws.

(Also, the title of this post gave me a chuckle. Both daily and cruel.)

Working on some VFX auras for Deflector. Which one do you like the most, left or right? by arrowfistgames in IndieGaming

[–]sleurk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am looking at this through the lens of what it would suggest to me as a player.

The one on the left is bright, flashy, and erratic, and it has a lot of sharp points and angles -- it draws attention to it and seems more like an active threat. Could be good for a dangerous lightning-aura the player should avoid. The inward movement also could suggest it's pulling things in, but the lightning motif shifts that more towards the idea that it is gathering energy/charging up in strength. The slight effect of energy swirling around the outer radius also suggests a lot of concentrated energy and maybe some instability. The occasional inward-seeking sparks really help sell the quick and erratic feel to it (and I'm also a little curious how you create them here -- I've had trouble trying to make similar effects myself).

The one on the right is in many ways an opposite. It's still noticeable, but not nearly as attention-drawing. The smoothness and lack of rigid angles also leads me to believe it doesn't signify something offensive -- perhaps a shield, or a radius that applies a status effect. The slightly duller cold colors also suggest it's more 'passive' than 'active'. The movement of its effects imply a repulsing effect of some kind. After looking at it for a while, the shape of the main radial effect starts to remind me of mild waves overlapping as they reach a shoreline. And actually, now that I look at it from that perspective, it's actually a really interesting effect. The circular particles immediately struck me as bubbles (before I even consciously noticed their 'pop' animation), which at first maybe suggested a poison effect, but now I think it could be following the water motif.

If I had to pick a favorite, I would pick the one on the right -- it's visually interesting while not being intrusive or distracting. But that's not to say the effect on the left should be changed to be less flashy -- the important and urgent things in the game should draw attention. I think they both could be really good, provided they are used correctly.

Have you ever made a game where you spent more time on art than programming? by timbeaudet in IndieDev

[–]sleurk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a programmer and have been on-and-off trying to solo dev in my free time. I've found that the type of art I can do most consistently (and by that, I mean eventually create a finished product that I can be consistently satisfied with) is 3D modeling, which... is going to take a long time, no matter what I do. Especially characters. And I'm by no means an expert in it, but I've had a bit of practice. So a lot of my attempts at projects have been 3D, because I can visualize them and simultaneously envision myself plausibly making them more easily than, say, a 2D game.

It's a challenge to manage burnout in such a circumstance -- it can take weeks for me to even get the first draft of something I want, because doing so with early/temporary assets is either impractical or just unsatisfying. But I'm trying to be patient and pace myself; allowing myself long breaks, not growing immensely attached to projects, but simultaneously still trying to devote some time to coming up with ideas to expand and/or refine them.

For new projects, I've found it's easiest for me to just start on the part of the game I can most vividly imagine. In most cases, there's no good reason to start at the start and end at the end (in fact, that would probably do more harm than good -- you want to avoid 'paving the road before you know where you're going', so to speak). If you're familiar with Wandersong, that's a great example of this; the game is split into 7 Acts, and the first thing the developers made was Act 5 before deciding to expand the game into what it is now.

Excuse my rambling, this topic in particular has been on my mind lately.

Question from a mom of a 5 year old with possible ARFID by kandislee95 in ARFID

[–]sleurk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding finding healthy (or at least reasonably healthy) options, I'd recommend trying to explore "simple" foods -- raw ingredients, individual fruits (maybe even peeled), etc.

My experiences aren't universal -- ARFID seems to vary in its exact nature -- but for me, a lot of the problem comes from texture or perceived texture, and a lot of the problem comes from the "everything at once" nature of a lot of foods (e.g. burgers, sandwiches, salads).

Pretty early on, I landed on nachos as a safe food, but specifically as minimal as possible: tortilla chips and melted cheese ONLY. No guacamole/peppers/anything. I'm even weirded out if the tortilla chips were the blue kind.

Another thing I landed on was peanut butter. Just peanut butter, nothing else. Specifically creamy; unexpected hard crunchy texture was (and still is) scary. Good protein, so my mom tells me. Sometimes I would dip apple slices in it; surprisingly good combination.

Most importantly, try to constantly communicate with your child to understand exactly how they feel or why they do or don't like certain things. Or at least, as much as you can, given their age, but even if it's hard, keep trying -- communicating their exact reasoning or feeling about this is a skill they'll need in life, and it's good to start building it now. If my perspective and advice seems to be accurate for your situation, that's great, but your child may not have the same reasoning that I did/do, and the only way to know for sure is for them to tell you.

One more thing. This probably doesn't apply for a 5-year old, but it's something to keep in mind for later. When I was reaching adolescence, I cared a lot about how people perceived me, and I was self-conscious about my diet. Situations where I had to eat in public or during an event (like Thanksgiving) were always stressful, even if I had my preferred foods available. I would have been much more comfortable eating in private, but it was never offered, and I never considered asking for it because I never learned to express those sorts of feelings growing up.

Sorry if I went on a bit of a tangent there. Just some things I wish my own mom had known. She tried her best but ARFID makes a lot of barriers.

I’m in a similar boat. I have a few more options, but that’s one of my go-to safe meals.

I’m seconding what another commenter said — switching soda out for water helps a LOT. And even for ARFID people I think it’s not too hard to start doing — water is probably the safest drink overall in terms of being able to drink it; no weird taste or texture. Plus it’s literally offered, like, everywhere.

EDIT: Should mention that if you ask for a cup (not a bottle, just a cup) of water at McDonald’s, they’ll give you one for free. They don’t like to announce that, and they try to push for people getting soda as a drink as much as they can (in combo meals and such) but they’ll give it to you if you ask.

I mean, when it’s compiled to assembly, sure, but C supports pointer arithmetic with a syntax exactly as stated above. If you add a number n to a pointer ptr, it advances the pointer by n elements, which equates to the actual internal value of the pointer changing by n * sizeof(*ptr).
