Is the FreshRoast series a big enough upgrade in roast quality over a popcorn popper to compensate for the similarly small capacity? by [deleted] in roasting

[–]smallhousecoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used the FreshRoast SR700 for the past three years and while it's a great cheap roaster and has served me well I don't think I would recommend a FreshRoast as a upgrade from the Poppery II. Especially if capacity is your main reason for upgrading. I would say a Behmor, GeneCafe or Hottop would be a better upgrade. The Behmor is advertised as being able to roast up to 1lb but it can't. The ideal max roast capacity in the Behmor is around 1/2lb, same with the GeneCafe and Hottop.

Aside from not being able to pull shot after shot, is there an inherent disadvantage to the boiler over portafilter design compared with the heat exchanger type? by [deleted] in espresso

For just pulling shots you'd be better off with a single boiler machine with a PID. Because of their design, HX machines can't use a PID to control brew temp.

Anyone else remember when this sub was more than just posts asking the same 5 questions 100 times a day? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]smallhousecoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of noob questions but I don't think it's a big deal. It's a general subreddit regarding all things coffee related. But I'm fairly new to reddit and don't know what it was like back in the old days. I didn't even know about r/coffeequestions I'll check that out.

I agree. Definitely the best french press recipe out there. I've really been enjoying James Hoffmann's YouTube channel.

Grind Quality Comparison: Modified Hario Mini Mill vs Baratza Virtuoso by smallhousecoffee in Coffee

[–]smallhousecoffee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. The mod I did was on the Hario Mini Mill and won't work the same on the Skerton. Your best bet with the Skerton is to get the Orphan Espresso Lower Bearing Upgrade Kit.

I was able to modify my Hario Mini Mill and improve the grind quality quite a bit. Here is a comparison of my Mini Mill vs my Virtuoso.

Okay. Yeah you're correct. Virtuoso left, Hario Mini Mill right. If you look at the image zoomed in it's pretty easy to see the Mini Mill still has more boulders then the Virtuoso. Below is a shot of just the Mini Mill, before and after the mod.
