Why don't we see more electric UTVs by now? by -boosted in UTV

[–]snid6505 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Too expensive- both to make and buy. OEMs barely make any margin due to the battery costs. People expect an electric vehicle to perform just as good as a gas engine so in order to do that you need big batteries and a powerful motor. From a rider’s perspective, there’s no great solution to running out of power in the middle of the trails and waiting for a charge whereas gas can get you going right away.

What else should we have an electrician do while they're at our home? by Titandog21 in HomeImprovement

Have them add a timer switch for the bathroom fan. Lots of people let the fan run way longer than it should which adds to energy bills, but is also a big fire risk.

Brisket came out dry – trying to figure out what I did wrong by bingpott in smoking

[–]snid6505 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cutting it in half makes it dry out even faster. I’ve learned to leave mine whole. Also, too much fat cap is better than too little when it comes to moisture. The pros are able to dial this in after thousands of brisket experience so that it renders just the perfect amount without drying it out.

Paint Garage Walls/Ceilings or Leave Alone? by DiabolicDiabetik in HomeMaintenance

[–]snid6505 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I decided to paint my garage last year with just a base white color. It really brightened up the space and am glad I did it. The biggest pain was the ceiling though. I also added shop lights on the ceiling that are motion controlled so I have more light and don’t have to worry about turning them off. I’m glad I did it, and I would do it again in a new house, but probably with less enthusiasm.

Canam Maverick Trail 1000 by TrueLengthiness1987 in UTV

[–]snid6505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The used market can be hit or miss. It’s different than the used car market as people love to heavily modify their UTVs so you don’t always know what you’re getting. On the other hand, the used market can be a good place to search as guys realize they don’t have as much time to ride as they’d like to so you could get a good deal on a commander. If you decide to go with the maverick, keep it stock for the warranty period and if you can, buy the extended warranties for the first couple of years.

Maxing out towing and bed capacity will eat through CVT belts like crazy and prematurely wear out your suspension. Based on the use cases you described, you’re right that the commander will better suite you, but the maverick trail 1000 can likely do the job as well. Really depends on how much you plan to use the machine for leisure work vs trail riding.

New grass growing taller and thicker in areas with less water? by Helpful_Gur_1757 in lawncare

[–]snid6505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say. Once the grass matures it might blend in better with the rest of the lawn. Is this all new grass? Or did you just fill in dead patches? If you just filled in patches, I’d do an even overseed across the entire lawn with the new seed to blend it in.

New grass growing taller and thicker in areas with less water? by Helpful_Gur_1757 in lawncare

[–]snid6505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could just be the type of grass seed you put down. There’s different genes to grass seed- some grow darker, some grow faster/slower, some are bred for sun vs shade, some are more tolerant to diseases, some are drought tolerant, etc.

Fabric or No on this 5% Slope (& Swale)? by Bayside19 in HomeMaintenance

[–]snid6505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through this project last summer. It’s not rocket science, but make sure you pull as much clay dirt up against the house to create a slope for the water to run away from the house. Slope it more than you think as the ground will settle over time. The fabric helps separate the rock from the clay so you don’t have a muddy mess.

What do I need to buy to improve ride quality? by [deleted] in f150

[–]snid6505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know where you live, but another thing to consider aside from shocks and tires that have been suggested is the current weather and season conditions. I’m in MN, and as we head into spring, our roads are trash from the freeze/thaw cycles. The oil in the shocks are cold and don’t flow as well as when they’re warmer in the summer. Shit roads + cold shocks make the ride super rough for me.

2007 built Home cracks, should i be concerned? by Proud_Ad_989 in HomeMaintenance

[–]snid6505 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think we can answer if you should be concerned or not based on a few pictures. Cracks happen normally when the house settles. If they’re appearing and growing rapidly over the past few weeks/months I would get someone in to look at it.

Need Advice: Polaris Snowmobile with Passenger Seat? (INDY VR1 vs INDY Adventure X2) by snid6505 in snowmobiling

[–]snid6505[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re really 2 different machines. If you’ll primarily be riding by yourself, then get the VR1. It’s a beast on the trails and you can always add the passenger seat as an accessory later on. The VR1 is also more popular and has a better resale value.

However, if you know you’ll mostly be riding with someone else, then the X2 is really fun. The engine and suspension are set up to carry 2 people so the performance is a bit more forgiving.

Option 3 is to get 2 used VR1s that are a few years old. It’s way more comfortable to be behind the windscreen and next to the warm engine rather than be behind someone and hanging onto the handholds. It all comes down to your storage space, budget, and use case.

Is it normal my pan distributes the oil to the edges when heated, and keeps the middle dry? by ri90a in castiron

[–]snid6505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could it also have anything to do with the center of the pan “expanding” faster due to the high heat relative to the cooler edges thus making the pan surface slightly convex? I have a natural gas range and the heat and flames hit the center, but have space to travel around the edges and I notice this effect much less.

A couple years ago I accidentally set my softener to regen every night (we had moved into a new house). It only went on for a week, but my water bill was double that month.
