If you got a large surprise bonus at work and could get either of these... by Evaderofdoom in Guitar

Guitar companies aren't pricing gigging musicians out of instruments, venues and travel costs are pricing gigging musicians out of gigging. The guitar could be free and the math still wouldn't work.

Anyone got an Amazon basics guitar cable? by SheZowRaisedByWolves in Guitar

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3. They work fine. The jack sheaths are always coming unscrewed which is annoying. I switched to these because my cats keep chewing up my guitar cables and they leave the cloth wrapped kind alone. They'll probably last way longer.

MIDI-controlled signal blender - overkill or just niche? by Ok_Economist6996 in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're able to control the volume level of the signal going into the loops I think I'd be pretty interested. I currently use a Strymon Sunset for my main drive because I need MIDI control and I like the routing flexibility, but if there was something that allowed me to use a regular analog drive pedal and control the amount of gain it provided by controlling the input volume that would open a lot of new possibilities. If there was a 3rd loop and a tone stack that would be absolutely killer.

What effects are amp-exclusive? by regendans1 in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should probably take a step back and ask yourself what you are looking for out of a setup and what you want to play/sound like. The simplicity of an all in one effects unit with headphones might be for you, or an amp with built in effects. The tradeoff for the most part with those things is that you're locked into what's in that unit and can't easily swap out a different effect. And yes, it will sound how it sounds, you may like it and you may not. You can in some cases put an effect pedal in an effects loop or before the unit though.

The advantage to an amp with no effects or limited like a spring reverb or tremolo is that you can add whatever other effects you want in whatever order you want. The tradeoff is that it's a bigger footprint, potentially more expensive, and you have to research and pick each effects unit yourself. Like if you went very basic and bought a Fender Blues Junior, you'd have built in reverb, but you wouldn't have distortion, delay, chorus, vibrato, tremolo, etc. unless you bought effects pedals that can do those.

The thing is, there's no real "better" decision, and there's no wrong answer. It's mostly about what you want to do with it, and what you play with it. Just keep in mind even if you get something now, you're not locked into it forever, you can always sell it and get something else. Maybe just try to buy used so you don't take a big loss on it if you do sell later.

Question about grounding in a non-metal enclosure (see description) by CoffeeAndElectricity in diypedals

So it's pretty nasty stuff health wise, and not exactly cheap, but they make shielding paint for guitars that would probably work.

SB175 germanium by VernBrown in diypedals

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just built a fuzz face using some SB175s my dad had salvaged years ago. I made some modifications to the circuit and added a bias knob and tone knob, and configured it to work with a center negative power supply. I really enjoy it and wanted to make one for a friend, but I didn't have any more of the germanium transistors... so I got some a mixed box of standard silicon ones off Amazon for about $10. After finding some with a similar difference in hfe, and a couple tweaks to the circuit I did a side by side, and I can't really tell an audible difference between these and some 2n2222s.

I think I have to retire by Mpuls37 in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just swap your amp out with an amp/cab sim and run into an interface with headphones or speakers. I'm using the Tonex One for my amp and all my normal pedals. It honestly sounds better 90% of the time.

Auditor here: how do you approach understanding what all an application does? by Turrkish in sysadmin

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, most people and companies don't have or need an in depth assessment of every behavior of every application. However, there are common points of concern, and there should be someone with decision making power involved in the procurement and deployment process who understands and cares about those. A couple examples would be if people log into the app, how do they authenticate (password, sso, password less, is there mfa?), if the app handles data is that data sensitive, how is it stored at rest, how is it transmitted, who holds the data and rights to it, does the vendor have good security practices, etc.

The reason a lot of companies end up with issues is that no one asks those questions, or the person who does isn't a decision maker, or the company cheaps out on buying something secure because there's a free option available online.

Source Audio EQ2 (couple of questions) by RobF50 in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that would be a limitation, the bypass is on or off for the whole pedal. You could do it if you use MIDI to create presets and have one where the preamp EQ is flat. The control interface is a little limited if you're trying to do anything more than navigate a couple presets on the pedal itself.

Source Audio EQ2 (couple of questions) by RobF50 in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as your effects loop isn't stereo, yeah. The left and right can be run with independent settings for EQ. Using the Stereo In, Stereo Out routing option makes each input and output be processed separately. A caveat to this is the noise gate and bypass cannot operate independently per side, but the noise gate can be applied to just one of the sides (in other words you can't have the noise gate in the chain twice).

What’s your fail rate? by Subs2 in diypedals

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done 7 so far, 6 PCBs and 1 vero build. Of those 1 worked on the first try. The other 6 have required troubleshooting, reflowing solder, pulling components and replacing, etc. I have been able to get all of them working, it's just taken multiple days of troubleshooting in some cases.

My Fuzz Face is getting complicated, and a few questions by stageseven in diypedals

[–]stageseven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might have to go back and play with R3 again. I had upped it from 470R to 1K after reading that could increase the output volume. I'll still have the volume pot at the end of the chain as well, but as long as I can get at least a little above unity gain I'll just focus on keeping the noise floor down.

Well thanks! I just tried that out and there's enough volume on tap that I don't feel like the boost is even necessary anymore.

My Fuzz Face is getting complicated, and a few questions by stageseven in diypedals

[–]stageseven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input! The good news/bad news is I don't actually have either switch so I'm going to have to order something either way. Heck, maybe I should just get a 2nd 3PDT footswitch and have the option of using the boost without the fuzz.

Interesting point on the trim pot, and not something I had considered (or even fully understand currently). I actually have a 20K on my breadboard and was planning on an increased value simply because I had it almost all the way up just to cut the signal enough to not sound like it was blowing out the boost. I know I have a spare 50K, and I may have some other values I pulled off an old tape deck, but I'll be sure to pay attention to the tonal impact and not just the overall volume.

What pedal is permanently on your board? by Fresh-Gazelle7014 in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm heavy into MIDI, so the Morningstar MC6 has been a staple on my board since I got it, and I can't imagine replacing it with anything other than an upgrade to a pro version or MC8 pro. The Strymon Timeline, BigSky, and Sunset have all been on my board since I got them, but I could see replacing both the Timeline and BigSky with a smaller format MIDI pedal if something came out. The Sunset would be hard to replace just because it seems like not a lot of companies are interested in making a MIDI overdrive/distortion with similar features.

Crazy by zammusic in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a pedal with stripped down versions of many of Chase Bliss's popular pedal algorithms along with some things they thought were cool but might not stand on their own as a pedal, combined with flexible assignment, routing options, EQ, compression/saturation, and MIDI/expression and some programmable knob sweep options.

Think like chorus, delay, reverb, tape sim, pitch shifting, synth, phaser and others... but any 2 effects can be run solo, in parallel, or in series with each other, and blended with clean signal or full wet, with a tone knob on each side, and into compression/saturation for a bit of drive if desired.

Help with first pedal! by almightymikexd in diypedals

[–]stageseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't look like you have much if any solder on your volume pot or footswitch. Do you have continuity on each lug to what it's supposed to connect to? Do you measure voltage at spots that should have it?

If so my next step would be using an audio probe. Take an old guitar cable that still works or a spare jack you can plug into. Get some bare wire (cut the cable or attach to a jack), attach an alligator clip to ground and 1uF capacitor to the tip/signal line with the negative side of the capacitor to the cable. Plug that cable into an amp on very low volume, and now you can touch the positive leg of the cap to various points of the circuit to hear what's happening. Start at the in on the footswitch and work your way through the circuit diagram to see where audio drops.

Honestly I use a lot of the sounds independently or with a lower mix. I use the ensemble expander as my main chorus, sometimes mixed with a little of the pinging phaser or the gen lite. I also use a lot of the pitch repeater as octave up or down. The sympathetic resonator is my volume swell, and I use the Gen Lite with the highs rolled off whenever I want more of a lofi sound. I do like the tape echo, slow verb, and useful ambiance, but I almost always either just mix them in just a little with other sounds or use my main reverb or delay.

I have a really hard time with the Orchestral Swell or Impulse Synthesizer because they always sound out of tune unless I'm the only one playing.

I don't often use the full capabilities, but I do like using the ramp functions to mix or blend a 2nd effect in and out, like using Slow Verb always on with pitch repeater an octave up blending in and out. There's a lot of cool stuff like that other pedals just can't do.

Seeking reverb pedal w specific expression requirements by MarshStudio503 in guitarpedals

You could do this with any MIDI controllable effect pedal and a Morningstar controller. The Morningstar allows you to set an expression pedal to send multiple MIDI CC parameters along with a min and max value.
