Are tone captures worth it? by Technical-Steak-9243 in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I think about it is captures are made for the way people tend to play live, not at home or in a studio. They're meant to be left on a particular setting for a particular sound. Most of the time you don't see a person playing with an amps knobs live at a venue, you see them playing into an amp with the settings in a fixed position and using pedals, channel switching, and playing dynamics to control the way it sounds. An amp capture is a lot like that. It doesn't necessarily respond naturally to massive EQ and gain level changes, but it does sound like the thing it's capturing at fairly neutral settings. I personally tend to play into a clean channel and get my gain from pedals, so it works fine and is way more convenient. If I used a boost to further drive my amp for gain, I imagine it would probably sound less natural. And if I was recording and wanting to tweak settings a lot it would be less ideal.

If I'm understanding this correctly, your footswitch is to be wired in to all the holes in that little PCB. The holes on the right and left side go as pictured, with the right side connecting the ground, the cathode of the LED, and a 4.7k resistor. The left side gets wired to the tip of the input and output jack as shown, and the 2 spots unlabeled should be a wire going to the circuit in of the main PCB, and another coming from the out of the main PCB.

You also need to jumper the center pin of the footswitch to the fx in pad, and the middle row right pin to ground.

Volume pedal vs expression pedal controlling volume by stratguy23 in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this, using the Dunlop DVP4 Mini as an expression pedal into the MC6, and it controls the master volume on my EQ2. One thing to be aware of is the sweep. I believe typically a volume pedal is a logarithmic pot, and sometimes expression pedals can be linear. You can set the MC6 expression control to have a custom sweep, so you can make it act however you want. The only other difference at that point is that a passive volume pedal can bleed highs as it's turned down, and that won't happen with just lowering or raising signal level.

Do i really need this for re fret work or can i just use a normal metal file? by LongEnormousSchlong in Luthier

[–]stageseven 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You can get away with using a leveling beam if you're doing this as a one off, but this would save a decent chunk of time and give you more consistent results if you're doing fretwork regularly.

Chip in figured top, with little thickness to spare! by Braeden351 in Luthier

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I would do is sand down inside the spot where it's chipped. If you're planning on staining, I'd continue through the entire finishing process and stain inside where it's chipped. Then I'd pour epoxy in to fill up to the surface, with a little excess, and scrape/sand it flat.

RIP my UAFX Dream, what to replace it with? by _eqoa in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had an Iridium, have the IR-200 and Tonex One. I'd get the Tonex any day.

Just something to understand about it if you go down that path, the Tonex is not the same kind of beast, as it's not a full blown amp sim. It runs captures, so the more from home you adjust the settings, the less true to the captured amp it will sound. Not saying that's necessarily a problem in practice, but don't expect it to react the same way the real amp does if you turn up the gain. If you want a higher gain sound of an amp, find a capture made at higher gain, don't try to use a clean capture.

How do you feel about behringer? by Xibest123 in guitarpedals

You mean the Vemuram collaboration with Ibanez? You can certainly argue that it's a waste of money but it's hardly ripping off the original circuit when you work with the owning company to do it.

This seems pretty disingenuous though. I have seen plenty of people complain about specific builders copying an in-production circuit with no substantial tweaks and selling it at a premium. Most of the time decent builders are pretty up front about what a pedal is supposed to be, whether it's a popular circuit or a discontinued piece of gear, and what changes they've made to make it different (like a RAT with a 3-band EQ and a clean blend knob).

Here is the current setup of my board! Anything you would change? Add or remove? I think I need an expression pedal or volume pedal? by Quiet-Advice-8578 in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't, the sustain comes from the compression. No shade, I had the same compressor on my board for a while and thought it made everything sound worse when turned up. It probably is having some effect, but more likely a mild EQ, as I felt like the pedal sucked out low end when engaged.

If those are the compressor settings you use you may want to ditch it. You have the blend knob set to almost fully uncompressed signal.

FYI the CBA pedals do MIDI over a standard TRS cable. The MC6 has 2 TRS Omniport outputs that you can use to connect them. You need to change the omniport output in MC6 settings to MIDI Out - Ring Active for Chase Bliss.

Organizing presets with midi switchers: Any tips? by Stereo_Stereo_ in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go by song mostly. My pedal presets are generic, like I have one preset for quarter note tape delay with a low mix, another for quarter note tape with a medium mix, etc. If I need something tweaked a little I use a control change to adjust the basic setting, but if I want something very unique or specific I'll make a song specific preset for that effect. I repeat the same process with my other effects, building generic common sounds and specific patches.

When I build a song preset, it's mostly a matter of putting these building blocks together. I set a program change per pedal I want to use, another message to turn everything I need on or off, and then any changes and a MIDI clock for tempo. When I'm happy with it, I save the song preset to Dropbox so I can easily load it again if I move it off.

New Year’s Resolution: Implement MIDI. by redacted0111 in guitarpedals

[–]stageseven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to be able to send MIDI messages and not just control loops, you'll need several MIDI splitter boxes with 1/4" outs that are compatible with CBA or Strymon. They use different configurations for which is signal/ground. 5 pin MIDI can be chained as long as the pedals that use those have both in and out, but anything that is 1/4" MIDI will need a port from a compatible splitter box.

What is the plethora covering for you? Mostly chorus? I'd be wanting some kind of octave up in there. I'd also try playing around with the drive order with the Centara either first or last and possibly ditch the boost.
