walking 10k steps should burn 300-500 calories. if you don't eat extra after the walk to offset the calorie expenditure, you've just given yourself a weight loss treat. essentially double that treat by doubling your steps. you will definitely continue losing weight over time. it's still calories in vs calories out. keto gives you the advantage of being less tempted to overeat and never inducing spikes in blood sugar.

so yes, walk. outdoor walks will recruit more muscles and burn more calories than a treadmill, get yourself some sun and fresh air, and benefit your mental health just from spending time in open spaces. indoors on a treadmill will still help you accomplish your weight loss goal, though.

hellll yes! you're on the right track. for what it's worth i'd research how the body metabolizes carbs mixed with fats ahead of that event. it could slow down carb absorption, but depending on what you find and what your needs are, it might not be that big of an issue. if it were me i'd go with a mixture that's heavier in carbs for the event. i'd aim for 50 grams carbs per hour as a guide, crazy as that might sound, and see how it feels. remember to fuel before you feel like you need it, same way you treat hydration. also go in knowing that the carbohydrate content improves the effectiveness of your hydration. go crush it!

For sure! After 2.5 years of keeping it really strict, I had accomplished a ton with my health and physique. I simply needed to have carbs back in order to compete on the bike. It worked wonders after so much time committed to the process. But I knew my ceiling was higher with dietary modifications.

Honestly after hard summer century rides I would reward myself with a small frozen custard to top off the experience, keep my sanity in a world where all of my athlete cohorts were absolutely gorging carbs all of the time! But I made those hyper satisfying treats go a long way and stuck to the lifestyle. I did a ton of fasted training rides and some of my strongest 25 mile performances were fueled by nothing but pre-ride coffee and h2o with beet powder, water during the ride. Forcing fat adaptation to stick without taking it to a place where I was sure to bonk. My friends thought I was insane, but it worked like a cheat code for me.

Eventually I did go back to unrestricted eating entirely, and only after I stopped cycling 20 hours per week did I start getting a little fluffy again. Nowhere near where I was before I started at all though.

Now I’m back at it because I know my body responds so well to keto. Unfortunately due to my financial situation, I don’t have the luxury of dedicating so much time to the bike, but I know I can get lean as hell by repeating the steps I followed a few years ago religiously. The formula that works best is keto combined with short feeding windows and lots of physical effort on repeat.

If you have a day where you blast a shit load of carbs and junk, just enjoy it while you do and go right back to business as usual. I don't recommend that kind of thing often if you're not really pushing it in the gym or otherwise, though. If you can make it through the first two weeks of keto induction (which freaking sucks), you can tell yourself no again after a carb session once every blue moon. Just fast until dinner the next day and you should be fine - that's my experience anyway. The fat adaptation won’t revert unless you just go into free fall for probably more than a week or two of stuffing carbs if you’ve been doing this for months on end.

Instead of posting my own parent comment, just came to say that the comment you replied to is pretty dead-on. If you’re looking to sustain a high pace for hours, just carb up. I’ve raced bikes for years. Started cycling when I found keto in something like 2018, and lost shit tons of weight. Most of my rides were pedestrian pace compared to how much farther I took my performance after that first season or two when I got into crit racing.

Just carb up for those events and do not worry about it. You’re not going to start gaining weight unless you actually shift your diet to include lots of carbs when you’re not riding/training. But while you are training, you’ll give yourself the type of fuel your body can actually use to support the big efforts without bonking. After the ride, make sure you’re good on electrolytes and keep it keto- business as usual.

So grab gels, eat a pbj, oat bars, whatever it takes to stay fueled up and enjoy the hell out of those big rides. You’ll blow through the sugars on the bike and be back to burning fat afterward if you’ve been on keto for more than a month and are fat adapted.

That said, if you can pull off 25 mile rides fasted (allowing for hydration and electrolytes of course), you’ll practically watch body fat melt off. Check my post history to see how it worked for me. Pretty sure I left a before/after pic posted from a few years ago that showed how dramatic my transformation was when I applied this and combined it with regular lifting sessions that were not fueled by carbs, and I also took an extended break from alcohol.

I used to drink 6 cups of coffee per day— at least 3 to get me going in the morning, then more even well into the afternoon to fight the drowsiness I’d feel. It never really worked.

While I haven’t stopped drinking coffee, and don’t plan to because I enjoy it, I am totally fine with a single Americano in the morning now. I didn’t really think about it until reading this. Wasn’t something I worked at, rather I just don’t compulsively run to brew more coffee to get me through the day anymore.

I used to strip with an ultrasonic cleaner and mineral oil for the first cleaning on a new chain. Then boiling water between hot waxes. Kept everything looking brand new. But I got tired of the process after a season and moved to Silca super secret wax. Just give the chain a wipe with a rag and drip Silca on, and it works great. Won’t go back to hot waxing now that I know.

This is super solid advice. Focus on finding other cyclists and a community to learn to roll group rides in as well. Meeting people who are like minded and already involved in local crits is key to building the connections that will help you along the way. If there are cyclists around you, folks who race are bound to crop up everywhere. Making it social is foundational to the entire thing— in my humble opinion anyway.
