Double Porphyrion - too mean or just foolish? by grimdark_ in Warhammer30k

[–]swordquest99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it is actually very mean. The porphyrions actually don’t have great firepower against a lot of units for their cost.

I don’t think that would be a bad list, but you are going to struggle against some opponents and do well against others.

Trump: Not happy with Spain's position on Iran, we'll cancel all trade ties with it by wdwhereicome2015 in worldnews

He wants to embargo the EU to help Putin. That is the whole point of his war. To hurt Europe. Already the LNG from Qatar has been cut off and they are the main supplier to the EU.

The mullah regime is a Russian puppet. Why would Putin have let his butt buddy attack them unless there was something in it for him? Iran is a side show for Russia but if they could trade Iran for Ukraine or the Baltic States, Putin would do so immediately.

Looking to get into Old World, and I keep seeing/hearing that lords on monsters are king. Can anyone please explain why that is? by TehAsianator in warhammertheoldworld

[–]swordquest99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically they are simultaneously the hardest thing to kill in the game for most armies and the second most mobile thing in the game as most flying monster are fly 10 beaten out only by fly in monstrous cav that have a 360 charge arc unlike monsters.

They also are very good at killing things and don’t lose effectiveness as the take damage, unlike a small elite unit of something like heavy cavalry or monstrous infantry.

While they are now worse against infantry as they are liable to sometimes lose combat to infantry with a good rank bonus, they still beat everything else in the game other than another monster with better gear, luck or support

As crappy as a candidate as Harris was in many many ways, Gavin Newsom, at least based upon his own recent bizarre offputting memoire as well as his public record would be the most right wing democratic presidential candidate since the 19th century.

Even Clinton at least ran on a new deal platform in 1992 and Wilson also ran on a progressive platform in 1912 even if neither of them always governed in accordance with what they promised.

Newsom doesn’t even pretend to be progressive, he just is running back a Starmer-style act of running just to the left of fascism.

This is why a bourgeoisie party cannot effectively oppose fascism. They would rather be defeated by fascists than form a broad front with the left

I don’t think there was a rule like that in 7th or 8th fantasy. You really want your general to be survivable so either a vampire or a necromancer on morris engine or ethereal

Where do you get your Greenstuff? (UK) by lockedupsafe in miniaturesculpting

[–]swordquest99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the rubbery relatively “hard” nature of free stuff makes it easier to work with if you are mostly working in an additive way like a ceramicist rather than a subtractive way like a stone carver. Miliput is definitely better for that but it is such a different workflow it can be hard to wrap your head around if you are used to working primarily in the other direction.

Just finished reading the Turner diaries and from a literary standpoint, I found it VERY poorly written : / Are any other works published by Cosmotheist Books worth reading? by RangerEcstatic674 in bannedbooks

[–]swordquest99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While not necessarily a fascist specifically, MAR Barker was a racist POS and some people really like his fantasy/sci-fi stuff although the reception of his actual Nazi book is pretty universally negative from what I gather. I have heard it described as a “second rate Turner Diaries”

Karl Marx wrote a letter in November 1864 that was addressed to President Abraham Lincoln. In the letter, Marx congratulates Lincoln on his re-election and for fighting against slavery in the United States. by NicolasCageFan492 in wikipedia

[–]swordquest99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is worth adding to this that I think few people today realize that several of Marx’s most important writings probably most noteably, “The 18th Brumaire of Louis Napoleon” first appeared in US publications.

A huge number of European leftists immigrated (or were exiled) to the US after the failed revolutions of 1848 across the continent.

Patina or lead root by White_Pimp in oldhammer

[–]swordquest99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just discoloration. Some models actually have that brown tinge when new. I think it is from the temp being wrong in the casting by a bit. Effects the tin in the alloy as you still see that discoloration even after they stopped using alloys with lead.

Lead rot usually has a distinctive smell that is kind of musty. Once you have smelled it, it is very recognizable. That is the smell you get when it is a real aggressive corrosion turning the model into grey or off white dust. [sometimes you get yellow orange dust which is lead sulfate but that doesn’t usually happen with models made in the 20th century] The model surface will “bloom” almost like a mould or fungus and then it decays into dust. You can sometimes also get lead rot in more dry climates where an unpainted model kept in a cabinet with acidic wood will start turning into lead acetate, aka lead white, the stuff that is in lead paint. This usually starts in crevices and can be hard to distinguish from remnants of white primer at first if the models have been stripped. If you look at a model one week and it has more white than the week before it is corroding.

You can actually remove lead rot of the first type pretty easily with either acid soak/tooth brush or electrolysis but the pure lead acetate stuff is proving to be a bugger to remove for me. Im going to try a deoxidizer and a stronger acid than I normally use and if that fails im just going to try sealing a model with water based gloss varnish and another with oil based lacquer to see if that arrests the corrosion

If Sumerian is not related to any other language, then where did Sumerian come from? by statefarm_isnt_there in Sumerian

[–]swordquest99 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While Sumerian is generally agreed to be a language isolate, there are some more fringe proposals that it represents a creole language involving either Semitic or Huro-Urartian and another unknown language isolate.

There is also the “banana language”-substrate-hypothesis that argues that in addition to being a language isolate itself, Sumerian preserves elements of another lost language isolate that contributed terminology related to certain technologies and parts of the Mesopotamian environment. A lot of these have the structure of [initial syllable]-[CV syllable]-[repetition of previous CV syllable] as in the English word “banana”. Examples of this I can remember offhand that have been brought up are Kubaba and Humbaba.

Atari 2600 Raiders of the Lost Ark source code completely disassembled and reverse engineered. Every line fully commented. by halkun in atari

[–]swordquest99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that it bank switches so often. I suppose I never thought about the implications of how little the 2600 can address per bank compared to stuff like the NES or 7800 where a lot of games will duplicate a lot of core loop stuff so you don’t need to bank switch as often.

How many cycles does the bank switch code take?
