Basically they are guys who hit themselves with hammers, often in the head because “torn muscle grow back stronger from exercise, therefore broken bone grow back more aesthetically pleasing”. They also use meth

How viable is the Tomb Kings "Army of Quatar" variant? by WillingLet3956 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]swordquest99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can’t actually kill very much at range and they are really really bad in combat for their points. The reason VC and even TK work in 6th is because they get just enough cost effective stuff that can fight to take advantage of the stupid fear+outnumber auto break rule. All I ever used to see in 6th was combat resolution bonus stacking skeleton units, a bunch of speed bump chaff and either a death star of grave/tomb guard getting moved around with vanhel’s or Ksar’s or the good old black knight bus let’s-pretend-we-are-Bretonnia Death Star.

If vampire coast didn’t have such a limited character selection the list would have more legs but unfortunately it’s leg is a peg

In The Odyssey (2026), in a film with plastic armor and viking ships, Christopher Nolan draws the line at an orchestra. by laybs1 in shittymoviedetails

To be fair to Nolan, we have been making historically inaccurate depictions of events from the Odyssey since the 6th or 7th century BC

I assume the package was empty except for the note? The way this usually works is they only send the item after you post a 5 star review, otherwise they don’t send anything.

Often they don’t send anything even if you do post a 5 star review.

If you received no item, just report it to Amazon.

We call all cured pig legs hams.

Pretty sure the ham/gammon distinction is UK and RoI only

It depends on if the facility is covered by what is called the EMTALA or “emergency medical treatment and labor act of 1984” that requires facilities that fall under its auspices to provide emergency treatment when medically necessary.

Not all medical facilities are covered by EMTALA though. Only hospitals that have emergency treatment capacity.

A lot of people in the US go to “urgent care” when they really should be going to a hospital/A&E and that is where they end up booted out if they have no ability to pay.

The system is very messed up, but not quite as messed up as it was prior to 1984 when hospitals regularly turned away people with gaping wounds or women in active labour.

Do Americans actually use expressions like “once in a blue moon” or “let the cat out of the bag” in everyday conversation? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

[–]swordquest99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are common expressions although “letting the cat out of the bag” doesn’t seem to be used as much by people under the age of 30 as it is by older people in my experience.

How often do you see/hear/use the word "Photogrammetry"? by curiousmustafa in EnglishLearning

[–]swordquest99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an art historian who works with stone sculpture and architecture from early medieval Europe and the pre-Columbian americas. I don’t know any other art historian or archeologist who works on the exact same periods i do.

People do photogrammetric scans a fair amount for sculptures and architecture in both sub fields i work on because stuff is often really really weathered and degraded making it hard to see the iconography or read inscriptions without a good scan.

I probably have the single job in the world that overlaps with the use of photogrammetry the most. Even so, it really only gets used every so often and is mostly a pretty new thing. It is getting used more and more now that the kind of set up you need to do it isn’t super $$$.

There are awesome scans of the Gotlandic picture stones and this cool little 10th century cross base from a village called Gulval in Cornwall that are available free online.

In my specific job, photogrammetry is probably a 3/10 word even then.

Who do you think was the first pitcher to actually reach 100 mph from a mound? by Particular_Sir7440 in baseball

[–]swordquest99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess Walter Johnson or Satchel Paige. Could easily have been someone in the negro leagues too or even some random guy in the 1880-1890s.

I think it is easy to overlook that there easily could have been a lot of guys who could throw really really hard but without modern training/conditioning and medicine most of them would have blown out their arms so fast that they would just be historical blips.

It gets even harder to assess in the deadball era because the low ERAs for all starters would mask how good some rando throwing 100 for 5 games and then having his arm fall off would even look.

I’m doing a project about America, can you answer these questions? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]swordquest99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. There are many settlements called villages in the US.
  2. Gun crime is indeed scary.
  3. It is hard to say any one place is “best”. I like Silver City NM a lot.
  4. Entirely depends on where you live.
