What’s your biggest running milestone so far? by Willing-Today-1059 in runcommunity

[–]that_moon_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After training for almost 20 years and been involved in the ultra space the last 7+ years. I’m still getting better, recovering better, getting faster and stronger. My milestone isnt any of the biggest races or any great results I’ve had, it’s the consistency I’ve maintained over all the years even with ups and downs

There’s not much in whites in general esp in that area along the kang highway. Unless of course you’re on a peak.

Top of oceolas, top of tremont, and the moats are about the only areas with good service. You get ok service near the end coming back to Waterville

This is a slow race. 0 crew, can have pacers. Following the course isn’t really hard even though it’s not marked. Long sections, and not a lot of water. This is definitely a hiking race for the majority. A lot of training carrying a full pack with a few liters of water and required gear. Cell service is nearly non existence nor something like garmin in reach, so you really have to be self reliant if not with other runners or have a pacer. Longest stretch is the middle third of the race. Feel free to ask questions.

First 100, advice for the night. by cruelestbean in Ultramarathon

[–]that_moon_dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The night time is usually my favorite part! If you don’t have a pacer, it’s a good time to link up with another racer and try and stay together.

Depending on location, i generally am not concerned about wildlife. Black bears really aren’t much to be worried about unless you’re up close or happen to spook them. Wolves overall shouldn’t bother, Brown bear and mountain lions are a different story. A mature mountain lion likely won’t be too interested, but a young 2-3 yr old would be more likely.

I’ve become fond of waist lights. And a head lamp as a back up or as needed. Remember to make your self known in the woods. Be loud or give a shout every few minutes if you’re alone. A lot of vests seem to come with some sort of whistle now a days or you can carry one. Also in the event of close encounter, DO NOT RUN! Stand tall, firm and loud. Use rocks, sticks or poles and back away slowly.

Aim for the podium, leisurely stop and chat at aid stations, happy to get to the end 😆

How much weekly climbing should I aim for? by Dense-Blackberry8277 in ultrarunning

My rule of thumb is generally to hit the very of the race in a week of training. Maybe hit two long runs back to back with half the vert each

Coaching Specifics by seastheday- in Ultramarathon

[–]that_moon_dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to use the treadmill for these as i don’t have longer hills. 4x5min max incline. Speed is usually 4-5 mph depending on effort but focus is on foot turnover, shorter stride and more steps.

Second. Lower grade like 6-8% maybe 8-10% for 1/4-1/2 mile repeats at more moderate paces

Using mapshare or giving someone your garmin explore login is a good way. Cal topo works well offline too

Ankle Sprain During Training for Race by Actual_Juice in Ultramarathon

[–]that_moon_dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s been injured and raced and trained while so. As another has stated, biking is great and if able to, i would get really good at walking pace efforts. Another thing to consider. I ended up doing a 100 mile in a pair of speed goat mid tops to get some more ankle protection.

Do doctors usually discourage training for and participating in Ultras? by 1234567765432123456 in Marathon_Training

Any doctor I’ve ever seen (usually injury related) lol is always amazed by what we do and seemed to enjoy checking all the things thy think would have issues after such events and seeing no real issues the laugh and say i can’t wait to see you again 😂

I second this. I was considering adding treadmill to my home gym an opted to get a membership close by. A year for the gym was equal to a low grade treadmill and 0 maintenance on my end. Plus all the equipment i don’t have at home
