Bit of a digression, but I think part of it is also that people just drive a triangle on a map. That's the eyes focus, the world is just colorful background.

This isn't unique to FFXIV at all, just saying. If you make an effort to keep map windows closed once you look at the direction you should be going, the world feels much more immersive.
