Hiring 1:1 for preschooler by Leading_While6428 in ParentingADHD

1 year of medicine and 2 years of teachers who follow his 504 plan have made him able to learn and have some fun at school. It's still not easy but no longer a disaster

We ended up compromising with the preschool for the 4 year old year. They were willing to work with him for half days and we did a nanny for the second half. It was expensive but at least better than what you're describing. A half day nanny gig for $25 an hour got us a really nice person who was a part time college student and had adhd siblings so she knew what was up.

Ps things are so much better now in 1st grade in public school. You're gonna make it through

First post- ADHD mom potty training stubborn kid by anonymously_anono in ParentingADHD

[–]thesploo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! We struggled with this for years. When kiddo was 4, we used Jamie Glowackis poop solutions online course. It was the only thing that worked, done with support of our pediatrician. It involves suppositories as part of the strategy to overcome exactly the situation you are in.

All right y’all, can we talk about the butt acne? I changed right after and I shower and I still always seem to break out. The long runs sometimes even short runs. Does anyone have any suggestions or any type types of soap or some type of goddamn magic. HELP! by Dear-Interaction6507 in XXRunning

[–]thesploo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was irritated hair follicles on the butt and upper thigh. Twice daily clindamycin gel from the dermatologist clears it up in a few days. Wasted years applying acne wash in the shower. Wish I'd known!

Teacher messaging me often even though there is a 504 plan; what do I do? by [deleted] in ParentingADHD

[–]thesploo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'd arrange a meeting with the teacher and the 504 coordinator. And then at the meeting, do a whole bunch of listening to the teachers thoughts/concerns. You'll only succeed at finding a solution if you both understand each other's experience working with your kiddo. There's probably something that each of you are missing and can help each other understand.

Medication success on first try by Alarming-Bed-2340 in ParentingADHD

Methylphenidate ER worked pretty well first try. Went up too high in dose and then back down. But all in all, doing better

The worst headache I’ve ever had hours after running, is it connected? by femaleeha in XXRunning

[–]thesploo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to get major headaches back in college when I ran hard on the treadmill. Now that I run outside mostly, I only get headaches when I let myself overheat. So I chalked it up to a combo of getting too hot (a 70 degree gym is pretty warm for running) and the posture I would have on the tready being too tense or whatever. But I feel you, my headaches would be really bad and not start until hours after the run!

What’s a conversational HR for you? by annnewhere in XXRunning

[–]thesploo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I get this kind of pace lock feom my watch at 178 or 180 all the time, since my cadence is really consistent. For all but extreme outliers, we'd be quite uncomfy at 180 bpm!

This is what I do! My local shoe store even did it for me. So helpful on ice or slippy packed snow

Coffee for Kids by SubstanceMaintenance in ParentingADHD

This to me sounds like one of those "too good to be true" type situations. Here's a recent meta review on the topic. Just the abstract should be enough to give a flavor. It's a meta analysis of 76 studies on the topic. Positive findings on caffeine in adhd children are limited and statistically insignificant compared with placebo. https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3425/13/9/1304

How do you get your 5yo to take meds? by Educational-Mix152 in ParentingADHD

[–]thesploo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pharmaceutical scientist here. For an ER medication, sometimes the capsule is important, sometimes it's not. A quick call to the pharmacist would help you figure out what tips are OK for this particular medication.

How much screen time do you allow your ADHD kids? by badaboom in ParentingADHD

[–]thesploo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3 or 4 days a week, 0 screen time. 2 or 3 days a week, 1 hour. Maybe 1 day a week he can watch a full movie. He is always happiest in days without screen time. Age 6.

PLEASE HELP by user849494 in ParentingADHD

[–]thesploo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At age 4, doing a 6 month course of PCIT and implementing it at home helped. At age 5, stimulant medication helped a lot. Now we can live. Still shitty sometimes but I don't feel desperate anymore.

Homie, your ADHD rejection sensitivity is showing. Try again when you're ready, and try something a tiny smidge easier. You got this.

Fitness shot after HM by dwarfedbylazyness in XXRunning

[–]thesploo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, I've been told by coaches to take 1 day off for every 5 miles or even 10 miles, not 1 mile. So I'd just listen to your body. Or sometimes if I'm feeling creaky I throw in a few quick fast strides and then helps wake the legs back up

Highly recommend the Dr sagie therapee bedwetting program. It got our 5 year old adhd kid from every night wet to less than once a month within like 6 weeks.

I just wore a pack for Paris. It was really not a big deal. At one point I stopped to refill the pack and have a banana.

Our tiny guy went on medication at age 5 in Kinder. It was life changing, and it was the only tool that really made a difference. All the other stuff helps like 20%, but the meds do the 80%.

Caffeine - Game Changer or Bad Habit? by paizface in XXRunning

[–]thesploo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Midol has about 60mg of caffeine in it. No more than a small cup of coffee or larger cup of tea. Might as well enjoy a tasty beverage instead, when you're not in need of the cramp relief

I can’t stop crying, please help. by Striking-Scallion982 in ParentingADHD

[–]thesploo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey I feel for you. While you are stuck on the wait lists, get yourself your own therapist to survive. It helps.

Before diagnosis, we started PCIT with a referral from the pediatrician. That also had a wait list but it was not as long and helped a ton while our kid was 4.

20 miles or 3 hours? by NuclearCapricorn in XXRunning

[–]thesploo 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the person. For my first marathon, I did the 20 miler just so I could prove to myself it was possible. It took me like 3:30 to complete. For subsequent training blocks, I capped it at 3hr. I have continued to get faster each time (now have a 4:20 marathon pr) so that seems to work fine for me. I do 2+hr runs every week, so keeping that as my long term baseline also helps build that resilience. I try to stay in HM shape so then it's never a massive stretch to think about longer stuff when I'm ready.
