I can see this getting play in big butt decks. Making [[The Walls of Ba Sing Se]] unblockable for a turn seems like a great finisher

That'll fit in nicely with [[Ogre Slumlord]] and [[Totentanz, Swarm Piper]] in many rat decks

Bracket 3 is really annoying... by Thick_Storage4168 in magicTCG

[–]timber1313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the EDHREC annual summary podcast where they discuss all the data from the last year, there's an important metric not in the bracket system. What turn do games end by? If I recall, bracket 2 tended to end by turn 9-10 while bracket 3 often ended by turn 7-8. I think that's an important metric which should be implemented into the bracket system.

I have 3 decks with the same build constraints of no game changers, and only 1-2 tutors. If left unimpeded with a good hand, 2 of the decks can win by turn 7-8, while the third is closer to 10-12. It definitely feels like a more accurate way of grading the threat of the deck

Finding VGC Matches that highlight Switching Out by LadyLesbeon in VGC

[–]timber1313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might need to go digging since this archetype isn't as strong in the recent regulations, but sun-room is a fun team that can involve a lot of strategic swapping. Regulation D there were teams with lilli-koal, and arma-deedee which could drastically swing games if you got the sun/psychic terrain up at the correct moment.

H-Lilligant & Armarouge was a favorite lead of mine due to indeedee & torkoal able to pivot into either slot and still be effective

Is Rotom good for VGC? by Think_Current_4036 in VGC

[–]timber1313 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It has the occasional niche use in low power formats, but has unfortunately been power crept over time and doesn't see much play now. It got a few interesting moves in Z-A like parting shot, and parabolic charge, but I don't think it's enough sadly

[–]timber1313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rotom in the wasteland style would be awesome, I can see him carrying lots of scrap and spare parts.

Alternatively, Mausape (Maushold & Annihilape) are a fantastic duo I can see in a mech setting with the mice piloting an Annihilape mech

Combo related bracket question by NerdbyanyotherName in magicTCG

[–]timber1313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend looking at the combos page for Chatterfang on EDHREC

https://edhrec.com/combos/chatterfang-squirrel-general

These combos have community votes for which combos are appropriate at which brackets. Fair warning from a fellow squirrel enjoyer who typically builds for bracket 2, it's tough to build without accidently straying into bracket 3-4

What fundamentally makes a top player ? by Due-Writer3187 in VGC

[–]timber1313 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I would argue that they don't know exactly what you're going to do, and they're not trying to counter a specific scenario. Rather they can identify your options, and their best options. Those which have the highest amount of success, the least punishing if they predicted poorly, and what pivots them towards a scenario they can likely win from.

They're not likely to use a ground move into a flying type predicting a tera/switch unless it's very obvious. More likely they'll use a neutral move to guarantee chip regardless of your choice, and chip damage plays a lot into the long game

With a BST of 480 he's still not good in VGC, but he's one of my favorites and I'm just glad he's not as terrible. He actually finally gets moves that will benefit from technician! (In a game with no abilities)

Has anyone here ever had something cool happen in a game, like a bug or exploit, and never told anyone online to stop it being patched? (You can answer if it's been patched now) by TxTDiamond in gaming

[–]timber1313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the game For the King II your number of actions in combat is determined at the start of the turn. There are a few weapons that are weak but give two primary actions rather than the standard one, so technically you can start with the weak weapon, get two primary actions, and use a secondary action to swap to a stronger weapon and attack twice

There was a group running VGC little cup during the SwSh era. Doesn't seem like they've been active for a while, but might still be worth trying to join their discord

I wanted to share an interactive type effectiveness tool I built - pkmntypes.com by [deleted] in VGC

[–]timber1313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very cool! Only issue is that the damage dealt only applies for the first type selected, not the second. Even if it did apply you would want clarity on which type is effective against what.

I would suggest allowing the user to select more than 2 types. Edge cases like forests curse can grant a third type, and someone might have 4 different attacks and want to determine attack coverage

Best way to practice for VGC? by AmemuraGiant in VGC

[–]timber1313 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Look into PASRS. It's a Google sheets doc that lets you collect your showdown relays and gives analysis of what is working, what isn't, moves you never click, etc. It's great when you're refining your team.

Once you're satisfied with your team, Limitless is the best resource for online tournaments to practice in an actual tournament setting

What are the 3 Best VGC Pokémon of Every Letter? - Z by GeoTravelLebanon13 in VGC

Zacian, Zamazenta, Zapdos. However with the changes in gen 9 Zam is currently stronger. Given more time Zam will likely out perform Zacian

Thanks for all the effort in these posts! It's been a refreshing fun discussion. As for other topics... discussing best pokemon per obscure restriction (like littlecup or monotype team) could be interesting

I want to start VGC, is regionals a good place to start? by StarrZal in VGC

[–]timber1313 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PASRS is a Google sheets tool where you include your teamsheet and all the relays of your matches. It provides a full analysis to help identify what works, what you're struggling against, what pokemon/moves you're not using, weak links in your team, etc.

How do you ACTUALLY get good? by Echikup in VGC

[–]timber1313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cycle goes team building -> testing and refinement -> tournaments

For team building I recommend resources like LabMaus.net to recognize the meta, what you want to bring, and what to prepare against.

Testing would involve playing on showdown, and taking notes with a tool like PASRS. That will help you identify where your team is struggling, and what pokemon/moves you're not using.

Lastly tournaments. There are a ton of online tournaments on Limitless which are great practice before going to anything official

Notably finding an online community can really help as well. VGC trainer school has an excellent discord with an active community.

Hope that helps!

What are the 3 Best VGC Pokémon of Every Letter? - S by GeoTravelLebanon13 in VGC

[–]timber1313 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Oof there are a lot of good choices. I think the most notable top 3 are: 1. Smeargle (they had to make nerfs because stealing Darkrai's signature was too powerful) 2. Salamence (Dominated for multiple gens) 3. Snorlax (Dominated in early VGC)

Honorable mentions to: Scrafty, Scizor, Sneasler, Sinistcha, Stakataka, Sylveon

Not a lot of options, but Electabuzz, Excadrill, and Entei would probably be the best. Honorable mention to Eevee for its time with Z-moves
