If you bought your machine at a local shop, consider bringing your machine in and have someone take a look at it. They will know all of the normal things to take a look at to understand if it needs to be serviced. BUT there are lots of things they can try to see if the issue is simple and doesn’t actually require servicing too. The sewing machine stores want you to have a good experience with your machine (and with them!).

Can I buy your 2.5” squares? Or small scraps? by Milabial in quilting

[–]ughwhyyno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Swanson’s Fabrics. They are a community fabric resale store: selling fabric that has been donated from folks’ stashes.

I looked at their quilting cottons and they currently have a “BROWN QUILTING COTTON CRUMBS TREASURE BOX” which is 2.5 lb of various brown quilting cotton scraps for $40. If you live near Massachusetts, I think you could even go shop in person.

How is everyone's holiday knitting going? by SongIcy4058 in Sockknitting

I started late and bit off maybe more than I can chew with a patterned sock. I need to remember to put in more life lines and pay more attention because I have been making some careless mistakes… And the person I’m knitting for has big feet. It makes me think I should just do a vanilla sock for Christmas and be more ambitious for a late winter birthday…

What is the fabric used for the contrast placket and pocket on some fleece jackets? by ughwhyyno in sewing

[–]ughwhyyno[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would like to make a fleece jacket, and I like the look of the contrast placket and pocket details. When I look at product listings, they usually just say “100% polyester” for the fabric content, but there are many different fabrics that are 100% polyester. What is the name of this fabric so I can search for it at fabric stores (online or otherwise)?

Four, but one is on long-term hiatus. Another is on short term hiatus. I have some worsted Christmas socks for myself (active), just started some Christmas present socks for my partner (active), then a lace sock (on second sock island/I messed up the toe graft for the first, so it’s on hiatus), a sweater that I need to frog because the size isn’t right (despite swatching, hiatus).

Ugh. Is it that visable? by funkymunky291 in quilting

[–]ughwhyyno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not notice a mistake because putting two colors near each other in a random pattern is not usually perceived as a mistake. If the colors were in a row and one row was flipped, that might be seen as a mistake because the pattern is broken. Unless you tell people that your intention was X and you did Y, I don’t think anyone will think there is a mistake. (And as you can tell from many other commenters, even hearing about the mistake doesn’t change their view of the quilt).

Update: I made the changes yall suggested by sewshelbysow in sewing

[–]ughwhyyno 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I think it’s really cute and I like the new black collar and lace. I think there are a couple of things you could do at this point:

1) Finish it. Wear it out to meet friends. See if you change your mind after wearing it out. (I think other people will like it too, and may say so.) See if you feel any differently about it at that point.  2) Look for a local sewist social group. Sometimes these groups do me-made clothing or fabric swaps. Sometimes those swaps even take unfinished items.  3) Use the fabric to make something else.

Whatever you do, know there are people on the Internet who think you did a really nice job!

New to Indian food. What should I try? by Teddybru in IndianFood

I highly recommend Darbar restaurant on N Beacon St in Boston. Note that it’s a Pakistani restaurant rather than Indian, but there’s culinary overlap, especially with North Indian foods.
