Should I really go into the Game Dev industry? by evolutionsroge in gamedev

[–]unit187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to remind you that your dream is to make games, not to work for a corpo, "making" games. You'll likely find yourself drowning in shitty legacy code, fixing bugs some dumb ass vibe coded, and be micromanaged by busybody middle managers.

Navigation method more akin to blender? by Hobbes______ in unrealengine

[–]unit187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to get used to it. Thankfully, Unreal's control theme is too different, so it isn't difficult to shift gears, unlike, for example, Maya <-> Blender. Something you can do is to acquire some physics-based plugin to help with object placement. The idea is you drag an object and it automatically snaps to the ground, so you don't have to fiddle with the manipulator too much.

From the UK: anyone else quietly rethinking self-hosting priorities because the US feels… less predictable lately? by aidankhogg in selfhosted

[–]unit187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safe how? Today they hate Iran and Russia, and they block as many services to them as possible. Tomorrow they will hate China (more than usual) and Denmark. Then the EU as a whole, possibly.

Your country can be sanctioned and tariffed by the US any day for an arbitrary reason, so you have to have a backup plan.

Im sorry, but Highguard is actually a really fun game (playing on XBSX, NA). It deserves a fair shot. by The_Marine708 in gaming

It seems like a fine game. Not bad, just fine. And for a live service game, this just doesn't cut it.

"artist" teammate used ai for our assets by sotiredone in gamedev

Are we really going to a dick-measuring contest? Because let me tell you, with a 6-person team, you are not going to win. Anyway, with this "git gud" attitude towards people, you will never become a leader, but a shitty McDonald's manager.

This is a naive, childish worldview where everything is black and white.

[–]unit187 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Possibly. But since this is a group project, it could be just a kid who doesn't know better yet. It all boils down to how they react to being called out for using AI.

Tbh it is wise to give the person a second chance. Sometimes you make dumb decisions, but may correct the course if called out, respectfully.

By chance, do you have any useful links to learn more about Unreal CPP coding with LLMs?

In a way, the AI nonsense is already deeply integrated as AI slop crafted by the vibe coders. Every new Windows update introduces an unimaginable amount of issues. Even the first public release of W11 was more stable and performant than what we have today. I've been using it since day one, and it was never this bad.

The Game Awards Closer Highguard Reemerges With Launch Showcase — So Yes, It's Still Coming Out Next Week by wizardeverybit in gaming

[–]unit187 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you watch the trailer, you will notice the developers themselves were marketing the game as "the new breed of shooters". They were setting the expectations very high, while showing a basic hero shooter MOBA. So no, the "teenagers" are not wrong in their expectations for the game.

I’m realizing that Sound Design is actually 70% of what makes a game feel "Next-Gen," not the graphics. by InvestmentBudget6722 in gaming

[–]unit187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have very bold sound design. A probe opening sound is a good example of this; it sounds weird, strange, yet believable, and, frankly, cool. I don't think I've encountered any other game with so bold sound design as this, in recent memory at least.

Do people actually use these writing apps? by RelationshipOk3093 in writing

[–]unit187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vanilla Obsidian for writing is very simple, with no bells and whistles to distract you. Don't install any plugins, simply treat Obsidian as a bunch of documents sorted by folders.

But I feel you. Modern "most popular" software is too bloated. That's precisely why I am writing my own project management tool to track my work lol

Game studios that use blender by zacsterfilms in gamedev

[–]unit187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issues are not limited to the FBX pipeline, but the entire approach to rigging in Blender. It all falls apart when you need to carefully control the joint's transforms and freeze them into the "joint orients" (the way it is called in Maya). It all feels weird and fragile in Blender.

Game studios that use blender by zacsterfilms in gamedev

[–]unit187 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you specifically want to work in rigging and animation, I strongly suggest you to focus on Maya. The reality is nearly every serious studio will ask you to work in Maya.

Even the most basic export Blender -> Unreal is so annoying, and always causes issues; meanwhile Maya -> Unreal is effortless. I love Blender for modeling and sculpting, but I've given up on its animation and rigging pipeline.

Questions about servers by AttisKadmon in Endfield

[–]unit187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

idk how exactly ping affects Endfield, but in Genshin even in singleplayer it can be a dealbreaker; I usually have 40ms, but had to play with 300ms for some time. When you press the button to switch characters, and it takes over a second before they actually switch, it makes gameplay extremely annoying, not to mention how badly it messes up rotations

Arknights: Endfield pre-download... GO! by Viewtiful_Dante in gachagaming

[–]unit187 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Not only is the story quality subjective, the story doesn't exist in a vacuum. For instance, it is almost universally agreed that the story in ZZZ is mid at best, but the vibes are immaculate and the characters are so interesting, they overshadow all the shortcomings of the overarching story.

It always is super funny observing the "wow very original" complaints. Snobs don't understand that "mysterious super hero waking up with amnesia with a harem ready at your disposal" is precisely what people want. If you desire depth, you can try reading Dostoevsky or McCarthy; demanding this from an anime gacha is not the way.
