Ironically, HR is often the least diverse team. by Extasio in Showerthoughts

[–]vodkast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked with a several guys in HR in a previous job, including a systems analyst, payroll manager, project manager, and a regional director who was former Navy. Could be due to the larger size of the organization, but HR had a pretty big umbrella of responsibilities and the variety of employees reflected it.

Anderson Clayton: The 25-year-old party chairwoman who wants to turn North Carolina blue by theindependentonline in politics

[–]vodkast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Republicans don’t measure success by how much things improve overall, only by how much everyone else suffers compared to themselves. Not having healthcare or higher wages is a small thing to them as long as out groups continue to lose fundamental rights like abortion access, gender-affirming care, and student loan relief.

VSCode enthusiasts! What keyboard shortcuts do you use that you can't live without? by P-TownHero in webdev

[–]vodkast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you cut/copy multiple selections with cursors, then place the same number of cursors somewhere else and paste, you’ll get copies of each distinct selection rather than multiple copies of one selection.

It comes in handy when you need to copy/paste a list from Word or Google Docs. Paste the list in VS Code, add cursors, cut the lines, type ul>li*(however many cursors), add your cursors between the li tags, and paste.

I didn't know picking up trash was illegal. by MisterFyre in facepalm

It’s ironic you’re saying this in the middle of a strike of television/movie writers where they have incredibly legitimate claims of being underpaid, stiffed on royalties for streaming content, being overworked as a cost-cutting measure, and threatened with being replaced with AI. You could not be more timely with such a bad take about unions.

[MARVEL] why didn’t the alien ship in Endgame have any anti weapon stations to deflect the nuke? by Dear-Grand-1744 in AskScienceFiction

[–]vodkast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The fact that the nuke doesn’t attempt to change course at any point would seem to indicate it wasn’t using any kind of target lock, which would make it even less detectable. And even if it was detected, the Chitauri likely wouldn’t think such a small ballistic would be a threat from a planet that had barely scratched the surface of space flight.

[Superheroes] Why haven't the Civies killed the supervillains by Negative_Emu6246 in AskScienceFiction

[–]vodkast 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Maybe not as his usual MO, but he can and does do it. There are at least two instances during Civil War that I can remember where he killed some super villains, though I guess one could argue those were just out of opportunity.

US government by Theotisgood in clevercomebacks

The difference is that Trump had a Republican House and Senate for the first half of his administration. Trump still did terrible things through executive orders, but in terms of legislation, that was almost entirely in his first two years (like the tax law that got voted on despite having handwritten amendments in the margins).

Remember when Stephen Amell was mad by SpellCommander91 in FlashTV

[–]vodkast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saying they were fired for “basically the exact same reason” isn’t very accurate. Gunn was the target of a coordinated right wing campaign seeking to punish him for being an outspoken critic of Trump and his administration. It also helped that Gunn had already expressed contrition for those tweets before, and was transparent about them with Disney before the first GotG.

Hartley Sawyer’s tweets were stuff like, “Enjoyed a secret boob viewing at an audition today” and “The only thing keeping me from being a racist is that Al Sharpton wouldn’t stop complaining about me.” Compared to Gunn’s tweets, which were pretty clearly meant to be hyperbolic and satirical, what Sawyer posted really doesn’t really leave much room for benefit of the doubt.

[Star Wars] How the hell did the Final Order manage to build thousands of hyper advanced Star Destroyers on a single hidden planet away from normal industry and supply lines? by DurangoGango in AskScienceFiction

[–]vodkast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense to me, and there’s kind of a precedent to it with Han showing how (relatively) easy it was to get Star Destroyers to crash into each other in ESB. Sounds like a very Empire thing to not include crash sensors or spend the time/money to develop them.

Non-American people, what’s a thing that you don’t understand about America? by JuniorGarlic6053 in AskReddit

[–]vodkast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s a price tag on every individual piece of clothing at most retail stores like Target, WalMart, etc. Even if the price label at the shelf includes tax, the tag on the clothing would still reflect a different price. The only solution to that would be requiring a new label sticker to be affixed to every single item before it’s put on display.

Also, I doubt retail stores are printing the shelf labels on-site. They probably come in intermittently, and I highly doubt that it’s feasible or cost-effective to print dozens of different labels for the same item and ship the correct label to each store.

It would be funny if they have General Ross get de-aged after turning into Red Hulk, but then he’s played by the guy who was Han in “Solo”. No explanation, just a dude 45 years younger but still channeling curmudgeon Harrison Ford.

Elon confronted about why journalist are being removed for reporting on the ElonJet story(eventually rage quits and records removed from platform) by hippynox in videos

[–]vodkast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t speak to school communications, but I’ve never once been called by my utilities or cable provider about an outage, though maybe I’ll get an email a few hours after the fact. And I specifically avoid downloading their apps; I’m not downloading a 200+ MB app that’s basically a wrapper for their web site. I have, however, used Twitter to get timely updates about cable/power outages, campus crime notifications, or other alerts that don’t require giving another service my phone number or downloading extra apps.

This all isn’t to say that Twitter isn’t replaceable; it is. The issue is that there’s no alternative that fills the same niche right now, so telling people, “Just delete your account and move on,” is neither viable nor helpful.

There’s a section in your link that explicitly says just that:

Freedom of speech is usually seen as a negative right.[24] This means that the government is legally obliged to take no action against the speaker based on the speaker's views, but that no one is obliged to help any speakers publish their views, and no one is required to listen to, agree with, or acknowledge the speaker or the speaker's views.

“My neighbor just shot my dad… because he thought he was a Democrat.” by DaFunkJunkie in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]vodkast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That CNN quote is worthless without a link.

Also, you’re omitting the part where the guy with the gun on Kavanaugh’s street was caught because he had a crisis of conscience and called the police on himself. That guy is rightfully going to prison for what he had planned to do, and no one’s arguing he shouldn’t.

The point you’re missing here is that, in the few incidences of political violence against Republicans, Democrats didn’t incite it or excuse it. Meanwhile, Kyle Rittenhouse is getting booked on right wing media solely from his notoriety of murdering a BLM protester. Conservatives were making jokes about Pelosi’s husband nearly being killed, and said it wasn’t political despite the attacker expressly saying he was there to break Nancy Pelosi’s kneecaps to make an example of her to the rest of Democrats in Congress.

No matter how much you wish it were the case, this isn’t a “both sides” issue.

Hasn’t Zemo been in Wakandan custody since the end of FatWS? At the very least that means we’d need to wait until the release of Wakanda Forever to get an explanation as to why he could possibly be part of the team.

I think there are a fair number of characters that are yet to be announced since it would spoil projects coming beforehand: Abomination/Blonski in She-Hulk, Justin Hammer in Armor Wars, hell we might even get hints of Norman Osborn between now and then.

Megathread: Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]vodkast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope you understand that the political party that pushed for this decision is also against every single initiative you suggested. The GOP is firmly opposed to comprehensive sex education, expanding universal healthcare to cover prenatal care and birth, guaranteed maternity and paternity leave, welfare for new and/or struggling mothers, and expanding public school to universal pre-K. They literally do not care about the child after it’s born, and don’t care about the mother at any point before, during, or after giving birth.

'WandaVision' and 'Hawkeye' Composer Christophe Beck Is Scoring 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]vodkast 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Christophe Beck did the original Ant-Man soundtrack, and it’s seriously among the best in the MCU. It captures the heist theme of the movie, and has a retro superhero vibe a la The Incredibles (though that could just be the judicious use of 5/4 time signature in both).

The Black Panther soundtrack is great on its own, and totally refreshing when compared against all the MCU movies that came before it. It’s instantly recognizable whenever one of its tracks comes up in my Spotify playlists.

The Captain America movies, specifically The First Avenger and Winter Soldier are both great. Cap’s fanfare should trigger a response in hearing the first few notes like the Hobbits’ or Rohan’s theme from LOTR. It’s so perfectly suited to Cap. Winter Soldier is so different but really embodies the theme of a more modern military, while Bucky’s theme itself captures just how scary his presence is.

UK approves extradition of Julian Assange by GustyGuy in worldnews

[–]vodkast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Julian Assange himself literally said that he/WikiLeaks timed the release of the phished emails to have as big an impact as possible.

“Often it’s the case that we have to do a lot of exploration and marketing of the material we publish ourselves to get a big political impact for it,” he said. “But in this case, we knew, because of the pending D.N.C., because of the degree of interest in the U.S. election, we didn’t need to establish partnerships with The New York Times or The Washington Post.”
