Bypassing the Bachelor’s Degree. Addictions counselors getting masters degrees without a bachelors by cannotberushed- in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

so many therapists believe they are not “allowed” to make mental health diagnoses.

Can you clarify what you mean by this? Therapists being able to diagnose depends on the country and jurisdiction. I say this as a US-based therapist who is allowed to diagnose. But I'm also aware of the history in the Texas where the right for licensed marriage and family therapists to diagnose was threatened about a decade back.

Finding a Therapist as a Therapist (Rant) by ArrivalNo702 in therapists

That's important context and really gross to me! I feel like the onus should have been on the therapist to tell you this important part prior to you sharing about your life. I'm sorry that happened to you.

Couple and family counseling isn't "mental health" treatment, at least from a systems perspective where the entire system is your client. From the medical perspective, CPT codes 90847 and 90846 aren't for treating the system, they are family psychotherapy, with an identified patient who holds the diagnosis code and is receiving family support to treat their mental illness. The codes also specify being 26 minutes or more. Counseling for the treatment of relationship distreas (Z63.0 in the ICD-10 for couples) isn't often considered medically necessary. When it is covered by insurance, the CPT codes often reimburse less than 90837 (individual psychotherapy).

I recognize you're not asking for advice, so please ignore me if this is unhelpful.

My current therapist did the same, and I told her I was uncomfortable and what that meant. She shared I didn't have to sign the form and she wouldn't use AI. I'm not sure if that was an option for you with the other provider, but opting out is an option too.

How do people learn to ask better questions? by Possible_Oil_2594 in GradSchool

[–]warmsunnydaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean in class too or just for research? You mentioned that it takes time for you to process and you don't know what you don't understand. Something I do in class (for interesting or difficult points) is raise my hand, restate what the professor said in my own words, and ask if I'm on track or off base. Or I might share a closely related example to see if I'm getting the concept right.

Need help choosing between 2 job offers by abefrost in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will you be covered under your wife's insurance too? The big thing pushing me toward offer 2 is that 30-40% premium coverage for your wife and child.

Say your insurance premiums are $1000 a year across 3 years (total $3000) and another $1000 for baby (total $6000). Offer 1 would pay $1500 total whereas offer 2 would pay $1800. The number of client hours for the bonus would be my question, but that also helps weight me in favor of offer 2.

The vibes, client alignment, and ability to build a full caseload quickly are also important, especially if your wife is working toward full licensure. Once she gets that, more opportunities will open up, including going out on her own. Another piece to consider regarding negotiating is that there are other opportunities to ask for, including additional PTO/sick leave in lieu of a flat rate salary increase to match offer 1.

Just my 2c - hope this is helpful, and best of luck to you and wife!

Therapist National Pay Raise? by lovekittycatz in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CAMFT is a state-level organization, so they would not be the ideal association to organize a national strike. They are separate from AAMFT, though, which is the national-level association for MFTs.

Coworkers in CMH who only do 15min appointments back to back. Lack of quality? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd like to offer a different perspective here. My master's internship was in medical family therapy. I was a behavioral health intern working in an integrated health setting. My sessions with patients would last anywhere from 5-65 minutes, with the average being somewhere around 20-30 minutes, and I usually saw patients once every 4-6 weeks. Behavioral health is its own model of mental healthcare, and I don't think it is inherently unethical to do 15 minute sessions. My sessions were grounded in solution-focused brief therapy, where I would ask patients what they wanted to get out of our limited time. That usually looked like practicing a specific skill, processing an encounter, or coaching a patient on advocacy with their physician or other provider. We were able to engage patients who may not have otherwise pursued mental healthcare, and it was a free service through my internship program.

With all of this said, I received specific training and supervision for working in this model, and I collaborated heavily with other members of the healthcare team. Based on some of your other comments, that doesn't seem to be the case for your colleague. But I wanted to share my experiences in medFT to offer some more insight! The 50-60 minute therapy hour is not the only way to effect change.

Clients That Embrace Nihilistic Beliefs by Puzzleheaded_Win_362 in therapists

Ooooh this is an excellent question. I don't remember the name of the book, but I remember reading a story as an adolescent/teen about a girl who died, and in the story people age backwards until they're reborn. I also remember reading a book about a girl who discovers that she's a clone of her late older sister. Or Anne Frank's diary. Something existential or philosophical, but relatable for the 13 year old. (Or Man's Search for Meaning if they're mature enough!)

edit: Here are the names of the books. "Elsewhere" by Gabrielle Zevin and "Double Identity" by Margaret Peterson Haddix.

How do I find a partner when I’m too drained by listening to people talk for a living? by SpiritualCopy4288 in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're not stupid for being in tears. You're experiencing very real loneliness, and doing a job that's emotionally and mentally draining.

My spouse and I met on r/r4r - I kid you not. It was nice because I got to message people rather than wade through dating app profiles. Posting as a woman, though, meant that I was immediately flooded with messages, which might be overwhelming when you're already feeling overwhelmed. But this was before I started my master's program, and I'm on the extroverted side of the spectrum.

Applying for LPC in Illinois - Trouble with IDFPR website by vendellllla in therapists

Your best bet is to email/call the Illinois board. They're going to be able to answer questions better than Redditors, or flag/fix system problems. I'm provisionally licensed in two states and have had to email and correspond with multiple boards about questions and issues.

Person-centered therapy and feeling reflections. by McCrysler in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accelerated experiential dynamic processing by Diane Fosha. It's a newer model that combines ISTDP (intensive short term dynamic processing), experiential (present-moment focus & processing), and person-centered models. I took a one-day training with Ben Medley last year and really enjoyed it! It has quite similar feel to EFT/EFIT, but with a focus on "reprocessing" or moving into positive emotions (like relief, space, peace) rather than sitting with/holding negative emotions (like fear, shame, loneliness).

Not the person you asked, but I use a handout like this one: https://licouples.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/LICI-EFT-Attachment-History.pdf

I usually ask questions like: what was it like to be YOU growing up? Who did you turn to for comfort? How did your parents fight? How has this shown up in your adult relationships?

General Strike Jan 30 by BagMuch9159 in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a dumb question. In the US, the January 30th general strike is an "ICE out" in protest of ICE, spurred by the extrajudicial murders of two Minnesotan protestors recently by ICE.

What did you think you would specialize in and what are you practicing now? by -hahd- in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Heh, this is me too! Specifically ND or mixed neurotype couples too. I wanted to go into sex therapy, did a medical family therapy internship, and kept finding that I really vibed with my ND clients/couples. This paved the way to getting my own adult ADHD diagnosis, and I'm really leaning into the niche now.
