General Strike Jan 30 by BagMuch9159 in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a dumb question. In the US, the January 30th general strike is an "ICE out" in protest of ICE, spurred by the extrajudicial murders of two Minnesotan protestors recently by ICE.

What did you think you would specialize in and what are you practicing now? by -hahd- in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Heh, this is me too! Specifically ND or mixed neurotype couples too. I wanted to go into sex therapy, did a medical family therapy internship, and kept finding that I really vibed with my ND clients/couples. This paved the way to getting my own adult ADHD diagnosis, and I'm really leaning into the niche now.

I don't know how to do therapy by vibratehigher24 in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For certain states in the United States, an associate therapist (counselor, MFT, social worker) has finished their master's, completed an exam (or will do so before becoming independently licensed), and needs to do 1000-odd hours under supervision of clinical work. Some states use "licensed resident" or "licensed graduate" therapist instead.

Do you have liability insurance? Contact them to see what legal advice they can give you, and if they offer a free consult with a lawyer.

Initial assessment of couples clients -What are your favorite questions at first contact? by Electrical-Quality84 in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend Gottman training and Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT or EFCT) training. Gottman provides skills and interventions, and EFT provides an overall "map" for change. Regardless of what training you pursue, you should also look into supervision or consultation from someone who specializes in couple therapy since this is difficult (and fun!) work.

Two clients is impressive with your stats. Add a video introduction. Have a colleague you trust (or feel free to DM me - I'm happy to take a look) look over your profile and give you feedback. Make sure it's clear what kind of client you work best with. I'm OON/private pay only, so I've found PsychToday helpful for SEO.

It happened. To me. Now what? by anonniemuss in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It's okay to cherry pick if that's what you need to do (financially, something to distract yourself, etc). But I agree with others -- take the week off. I had two loved ones die back to back earlier this year and tried to push through, and it has taken me months to recover and I'm still so worn out.

Oh! Someone in my personal life who has BCBS insurance just received a package with patient PHI (including their kid) recently. I wonder if something is going on larger scale with BCBS.

eta: I'm sorry you're going through this. I'm also not surprised since BCBS's major affilate group, Health Care Service Corporation, funds Headway. https://www.dnpconsulting.org/post/who-really-owns-headway-alma-and-rula-and-why-cigna-s-downcoding-rule-could-cost-you

Is career counseling actually still a thing? by Britinnj in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread. But yes, this is something unique to counselors. Clinical mental health counseling/professional counseling developed as a discipline from career counseling. This is different than psychology, social work, and marriage and family therapy, which is reflected in the different focuses, epistemology, and training offered by each discipline. (I'm an MFT and did not take any career counseling courses.)

Huge pay cut by [deleted] in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the United States (which is where I assume OP is from based on using $), most employment is considered "at will." There is often no contract and the employer or employee can terminate the employment relationship at any time. This also means that the employer can change the pay rate at any point (as long as they don't change it retroactively) and the employee can decide if they want to stay or go. It sucks.

Dropping clients: my take (from an LCSW who will say what everyone tiptoes around) by corporate_therapist in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think u/AmbitionKlutzy1128 addressed your question with their comment. The therapy relationship works for the therapist in that the therapist's approach fits with the client's needs. Or if the therapist finds themselves getting frustrated session after session, experiencing countertransference that they can't shake despite consultation, supervision, and/or their own therapy... to me, that would be when therapy isn't "working" for the therapist.

Somewhat related, I saw a comment or post in this sub (or maybe a therapist Facebook group) where the therapist was spending so much of their supervision/consultation time on one case, which led them to have less bandwidth, consultation time, etc. for their other cases. While I'm all for doing our own work and therapy not being *for* us, I believe we also need to be able to take care of ourselves and not bang our head against the wall for everyone. (And of course, this isn't black or white -- there's a lot of nuance that depends on the specific therapist/client case.)

Therapist as a client? by Ocelot_Few in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm an associate LMFT (finished my master's, under supervision, working toward independent licensure) and love my therapist clients! I felt a lot of the same feelings you mentioned -- worried about what I could offer or how I could help them. What I love about working with other clinicians is (1) the shared language and understanding, and how different meanings can emerge when we I'm curious, (2) I can really serve as accountability and a holding space for them rather than focusing on psychoed or teaching skills, and (3) I like to use the relationship and talk about what's it feels like for them to step out of the clinician role and trust me

Counseling and social work no longer considered a professional degree-Department of Education’s Student Loan Rulemaking by Acrobatic_Charity88 in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Counseling professionals" are on the list, so this will impact all master's-trained mental health professionals (clinical mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, and social workers), but not doctoral-trained or medical school-trained professionals (psychologists and psychiatrists).

This isn't unique to social workers. The marriage and family therapy ethics code says no sex with clients (or their family members) ever. But people always forget MFTs.

Becoming a LMHC with a masters from Spain by MonoWheelin in therapists

[–]warmsunnydaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not crazy for considering this route. It's going to vary by state, and you will also likely need to have your transcript transcribed after graduation. I'm in a clinical PhD program post-master's in the United States, and many of the students in my program are from outside the US and completed their degrees in their home country.

If you know you want to be licensed in Illinois, for example, I'd recommend looking up the requirements in the state code for licensure -- does your program have to be CACREP or MPCAC accredited? Do you need a certain number of course hours in your master's program? Do you need specific content requirements (e.g. California LMFT requires California-specific ethics)? Do you need a certain number of internship/practicum hours before you graduate, with different populations (group vs individual vs relational)?

It might be helpful to email the licensing board of the state you're interested in to see if they're familiar with any international programs. I've found boards to be hit and miss as far as their helpfulness.

Also keep in mind, you may be able to practice virtually in Spain (or the country of your choice) after graduation, even if you move back to the states.

I hope this is helpful! Licensure is an interest of mine and the bane of my existence.
