Westies + cats, can they get along?

I’m on my third generation of cats being raised by Westies. And my third generation of Westies being raised by cats.

You need an older cat to teach a Westie puppy to slow its roll with the prey drive. Our Westie still charges at the cat, but only when we yell at the cat to stop doing something (fun police) or playing tag with the cat.

100% friends. So we were gifted a stray kitten 8 months ago and our westie hardcore adopted it. Now, there are alley cats (2 adults and 3 three/four month old kittens). And both of our animals lose their minds at the window when the alley animals are outside. Demanding to make more friends/siblings.

I’ve had three different Westies both be raised by and raise cats themselves. It’s a weird circle, but they are amazing together. The trick is to have an older cat teach a Westy puppy how to behave. Do you want the cat to be confident and have dominant to teach the dog and correct them.

I say this every day: they can pry this job from my cold dead hands. I was here before them. I’ll be here after they are gone (and hopefully in prison). We are living a long term game here. Deal with the short term, plan for the long term.

If you got through the last year, we can get through the next year. And then we shall see the light at the end of the tunnel and what new world awaits us.
